So for next season we are most likely looking at a starting lineup like this:

Crawford

Hernandez

Herrera

Rhysbombs

Altherr

N. Williams

Franco

Alfaro

Pitcher

Bench: Galvis, Kingery, Joseph, Knapp

Possible Trade bait: Galvis, Rupp (for a bag of baseballs)

If that is the case I am loving it.
With their financial flexibility, this team should be very good by 2019 at the latest.

They extended him because you can't have a manager be a lame duck going into the year. I think they were also waiting to see by year's end if they were going to be players in FA next year. The advancement of the young talent in the field helped speed that up.

Klentak will get his guy now and he'll be more accountable to the daily success.

Did we give Ed Wade too little credit? He built the foundation of the 2008 Phillies and his finger prints are all over this Astros team. Guess he's not so bad at building up.

He drafted Keuchel in the 7th round and signed Altuve as an international FA.  Springer was a high first rounder so I'm not giving Wade much credit for that one.  Everybody else came in under the Luhnow administration.

Wade was hired into a tough position with an aging MLB roster and a poor farm system but there's no getting around the club fell apart under his watch losing 100 games the year he was fired and for the two years that followed.

The only connection I can see is firing Ed Wade has been a milestone in building two WS teams.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Rather have Gabe Kaplan.

This team has a near bottomless pit of money about to be available, it wants to make a run at the big name FAs after next year and they're going to use Gabe Kapler as a bargaining chip?

I think either Wathan or Kapler as a young, analytically inclined, first time manager would be a more inspired choice than some retread.

I like the Kapler idea.  Seems like the best fit analytically and with pro experience.  Just not sure about how often minor league managers become major league managers directly?  Maybe I'm wrong about that and maybe Wathan would be good, but Kapler just seems like he makes the most sense.

Give them the check, and I don't think they care much.

If you haven't seen it, yesterday's presser announcing Kapler is worth a watch. This guy is something else. Kinda Joe Maddon, Billy Beane and Phil Jackson all rolled into one. Seems like a very motivational guy, whether that translates to baseball managerial success is yet to be seen, but Im all-in.

And Howard Eskin is such a doosh. WTF is he so infatuated with the whole coconut oil thing (he tweeted all day about it yesterday and then brings it up at the press conference - even calling it the "elephant in the room"). Kapler tweeted it 2 years ago in an attempt to get a laugh out of his players. Eskin acts like he's a child molester or something. Hate that guy.  :hot:

Didn’t read the follow up story but read an alert that flashed across my phone that said Phillies are interest in Carlos Santana.

To DH or play the national anthem on guitar?

I doubt Philadelphia will be in on FAs with qualifying offers.  They'd lose a 2nd and 5th plus some signing pool money.

This is a team trending upwards (rapidly).  Can't wait to see all the "diehard" fans trample over each other to get back on that wagon in 2-3 years.

Not sure why they're going after Santana.  I think Rhys has shown he can play at this level but maybe they still want to bring him along slower.  They're going to be spending on pitching as they should.

The Phillies name will likely be tied to nearly every FA out there this winter because of the money they have available.

Matt Gelb‏ @MattGelb
The Phillies are everyone else’s leverage this winter. “I understand why that narrative exists.”
Signing a 1B like Santana (or any offensive player, really) makes no sense for the Phils right now. I could see them being interested in a 2nd tier SP (Lynn, Cobb, Chatwood) if the price is right, and I sure as hell hope they at least throw their hat in the ring for Otani. Other than that, I dont expect (or even want them to be involved in) much this offseason.

And they sign him for 3/60.

The hell is going on?

Guess Hoskins going to outfield?  Williams/Herrera/Altherr trade piece/bench depth.

Odd signing.

The Galvis trade sounds like it was good.
None of those three are really bench worthy, unless they think Herrera is just too dumb to be an everyday player. I guess one of them goes and Joseph was never in their plans.

They also could use one of the three as a part of a trade for another pitcher.  All twitter speculation though.

Going to be interesting for sure. Gabe also decided he wants the quantitative analyst of the baseball research and development department to sit in the dugout with the players during the game. Guess which one he is
:lmao:   OMG. It might be over even sooner than I expected. Are these dudes going to be hanging out all year long???

This is a pace of play nightmare
Think of all the exciting triples and inside the park Home runs happening because Hoskins is too tired to track down a fly ball after running from left to right. :lmao:   This has 1000-times-worse than Chip Kelly potential.

It's interesting to read homer opinions on what Kapler might be bringing to the team. I had thought that Aaron Nola was a good SP to target, but now I have read that Kapler is steadfast in his belief in not letting a pitcher go through a lineup for a third time, regardless of context. So, even if Nola (or any other pitcher) is cruising, he's out after twenty batters or so. Or, if he gets off to a rocky start, but then settles down, he still might get removed in the fourth or fifth inning because he hit the quota.

Jake Arrieta signs a 3 year deal.
interesting structure:

The Philadelphia Phillies and free-agent right-hander Jake Arrieta have agreed to a three-year, $75 million contract, according to multiple reports.

Arrieta can opt out of the deal after two seasons, but the Phillies can void that opt-out clause if they first trigger a two-year extension to make the pact a five-year deal, according to FanRag Sports.

That two-year extension would start at $20 million per season but could be worth up to $30 million based on the number of starts Arrieta makes in the first two seasons of the deal and Cy Young Award finishes in those seasons, FanRag Sports reported.
