***Official Philadelphia Phillies Thread*** - Castellanos ****s wit Philly (2 Viewers)

Nola locked da f*** up!

4-yrs, 45 mill w/ Club option for a 5th.

Excellent deal.

They sign Harper this may be a better off season that when the 4 aces came together.
i haven't paid that much attention to these arbitration deals the past few years, but it does seem like a really good deal for the Phillies.

sounds like harper is ours?

Philly Sports Talk@PhilaSports_

@JimBowdenGM said “Harper and the #Phillies are rounding 3rd base right now, and there is a lot of momentum to get a deal done.”

Also said “Harper made it clear he wants to win right now, not in 3/4 years, but right now.” #Phillies

Meh, another week another "Harper is close to signing" report.  It is really sad that players are waiting this friggin long to sign because ball clubs can get away with it.  There will most certainly be a work stoppage in two years.

The first ST games are this weekend right?  Someone has to blink here soon.

This is kind of showing who has the power. The players do. Try this in football and you get way less cash waiting longer and are in for usually a down season skipping camp. The players here know they can stay in shape themselves and hold out until a team blinks. They'll still be able to play baseball when the time comes.

I'm not so sure about that.  Arrieta pretty much was looking for a 5 year deal last year and waited forever before signing the Phil 3 year deal.  The Nola deal is incredibly team friendly deal.  Maybe in Muchado and Harper's case but for most MLB players it the ball clubs that have them by the...well you know.

If you're not talented enough, then the market will dictate that. Arrieta is on the down side of his career and his play last year reflected that. As for Nola, the Phillies paid A LOT for an arbitration eligible player. No it's not a mega deal like the next one he'll get but it's way more than most arbitration players get. Had they tried to keep him on the small potatoes deal, Nola could have held the Phillies hostage at the table.

Any younger, talented players coming to FA can do the same thing Harper and Machado are doing with little recourse for the teams. They can't force a guy to sign unless they meet the players requested amount. The player really has all the leverage. Teams need these guys in their lineup or tickets don't sell and seasons get derailed. The players will still be able to play baseball later if necessary.

And then I wake up to this:

Sources: The Dodgers are back in the mix for Bryce Harper. Club officials, including manager Dave Roberts, were seen in Las Vegas on Sunday.

maybe he’ll sign by the all star break.

hes either still trying to get more money or he really doesn't want to come to Philly.  i am not the biggest Harper fan but i know he would help our team immensely.  but if he doesn't want to come here, just say #### it and move on already

whole thing is nutty. i put some good money on Phils to win the NL at +700 and to win WS at +1400 and i will be a pissy Philadelphian if the dude signs with LA because he wants to live on the West Coast more and take less overall money

There's only two scenarios here. Phillies offered the monster deal and Bryce is hemming and hawing over living close to home (LA to Vegas) vs taking the stupid money or the Phillies haven't offered the monster deal and are trying to get him at something lower than 10yr/$300m. If it's the latter, I think fans will be upset. If it's the former, what can you do. Just wait for Trout and grow the team as best you can until then.

How many of you guys really like Harper anyways?  He's always been a tad overrated and has always seemed to care more about himself then the team imo.  He's also never taken Washington anywhere and they had some talented teams the past few years.  It won't be the end of the world if we don't get him.

this- I don't want him- I think he's a selfish punk who will be a locker room cancer..  wait for Trout

I kind of agree. I mean him and Boras have dragged this out for an entire off-season. screwing over multiple other free agents who are waiting to get a deal done, knowing his has to go first before they can get theirs in. Selfish does seem to be a fitting word here

David Aldridge wrote a column for The Athletic that implied Harper is more than a little entitled, and also makes numerous mental errors in the field and on the basepaths that he never gets called out for, which in turn makes it difficult to police the locker room, which is what leads to issues like they had with Kintzler and Shawn Kelley.

Thought he was a punk when he first came into the league and he hasn’t changed my mind. Of the two I preferred Machado. My interest in the Phils wouldn’t be any greater if he signs and I won’t think twice about him if he doesn’t.

yeah, totally just wait for Trout.

signed,

Nolan Arenado's extension
Yup - it isn’t that easy.  And 2 years from now, what type of contract will a 30 year old Trout expect?  He will break the bank.  He will definitely have several prime years left but you have to think the decline would start sooner than later into that contract that he signs.

Listen guys. I am a Pittsburgh transplanted to Phila guy, who is boycotting the pirates. Dont #### this up for me. I want to cheer for a team who spends money for once!

It ain't happening. He's shopping every west coast team he can find to get any kind of better deal than the Phils. He just doesn't want to be here.

Even though this off season was built to be Machado, Harper or bust, I still think they'll be a decent team. Better structured defensively with Hoskins at first. Better lineup than last year. Bullpen should be improved. We'll be in the hunt. Maybe get to 90 wins.

Agree.  It really feels we are one big bat away from being a serious contender though.  I wonder if we are doing well mid season if we can swing some kind of trade for a bat

Isn't their biggest need pitching?  With the moves they made, their lineup is still very good from top to bottom.  I would think that if they can build up their rotation and/or bullpen, they will be contenders for the division.

We have some decent starting pitching and a bullpen.  Another starter would be nice but I think a bat is more important.  Hell why not both lol

Yup why not both.  They have the resources to do it.  After Nola, they have a bunch of question marks in that rotation.  I’m not sure Arrieta is a true # 2 anymore.  Pivetta is intriguing.  His peripheral stats last year suggest that he could make a leap to becoming a very good pitcher.  Would also be nice if they can add Kimbrel and build a dominant bullpen.

I'd be up for more pitching if the price is right Keuchel/Kmibrel.  I am officially done with Harper.  No longer give a #### where he signs.   Tired of hearing about it.

just heard Heyman told Missanelli that Harper signed with the Phillies...  let's see if that dude is able to get one report right this off-season

13 years?! Holy ####. The back end of that deal is going to be awful but it's not my money. I'll be 50 years old by the time this deal is done. My God.
