i am sensing a "california gurls" opener at the greek theater. 1) random covers have been all over this summer tour. 2) russell brand's movie refers to the Greek. 3) it is the song of summer 2010, like it or not. fishman in a bikini...with a popsicle? :shudder:
I'm thinking "Ride Captain Ride" returns. The lyrics fit.

Fishman did a Perry cover last summer, doubt they would go back to the well...

I dont know, without listening to it the show seems pretty straight foward. No gimmicks, no covers, seems like an old school set list. Not bad but nothing like the crazy run through the south.

I listened to the show on the way in this AM.

Pretty average show IMO. DWD>Free was nice. Not a fan of the short Halley's though.

Yeah nothing too inspired. Best moment was Trey honoring sign request for "Stage Banter" during encore.Still have to think that seeing Phish do anything at the Greek, being in the Bay Area all weekend, is an experience to cherish. Same goes for Telluride. They could play MMM-Bop for 1.5 hours and it would still be a special show if you were in attendance.

Show was probably amazing to be at. And it's just night 1. Looks like a fine set list to me...I fall short on some of the covers and stuff.

The good and bad from last night IMO:

Good: The band is very very tight, trey laid off the whale tone for the most part, only a couple instances come to mind.. might have something to do with his new guitar?? sick venue, there was a palpable sense that people (including the band) were very stoked just to be there.

Bad: 2nd set sorta lost steam in the middle, some of the jams (DWD and Tweezer) seemed cut short, (particularly the transition from tweezer into fluffhead which was super abrupt and came just as the tweezer jam was getting spacey)

All in all though, it was a very good time and I'm looking forward to tonight!!

I haven't heard the show yet, so I defer to those who have, but a Possum to open when the sun is still setting is a great way to start a weekend and an Antelope to close the first set reads well. And if I were naming songs to appear in a dream set, DWD, Maze, Tweezer, and Flufhead all make the list. Some consider it played out, but I love tweeprise enders.I'm sure alot of you follow Mr Minor's blog - I love following his blog to keep up with Phish - but some of his show reviews are borderline unreadable. From last night for example:
Fusing the laid-back love of California into rhythms of the soul, Phish unveiled a mythical excursion that will be getting non-stop play for the foreseeable future. Using musical space every bit effectively as sound, Phish demolished grooves that shook Mount Olympus to its foundation. An immortal sculpture whose stature will never truly translate to tape, this version funneled directly from the heavens into the inner respites of the human spirit – ambrosia of the gods.
I realize that you have to be creative if you're going to continue to reviews shows from the same band over and over and over.....but come on. This just reaks of an English Lit major trying too hard.

Throw in Funky ##### and Divided Sky into that list and it's pretty solid. Some of the stuff I could live without, like NICU, Joy, even Bouncing....but we all have our preferences and dream set lists.

Agreed - I love Funky #####. Divided Sky is hit or miss for me.

The jam in Wolfman was the sickness. Down dirty funk in it purist form. Also I loved the way they buried Trey's guitar lick in Reprise. It was tunneling under the funk like the killer worms in the movie Tremors. Top three Reprise I've ever seen.

Mr minor is a trust fund kid that actually teaches/taught english in San Fran. He screams douchiness if you ask me. Somehow he gets tickets, time and money to go to every show. the way he writes the verbal fellatios of the shows gets disgusting sometimes. Look I love phish, have seen them over 50 times and try to listen to every show but even I know that Phish doesnt have it every night. When Minor writes like he did above it tells me the show wasnt all that great and he is trying to sugar coat it talking about "grooves" and "stature that will never translate to tape". Stop make excuses and call it like you see it. I feel pretty good in my ability to hear a show after the fact and tell if it was good or not. I will listen in the next day or so and if I am wrong then i will be the first to admit it.

Not bad. If I had tickets to all three shows I would be thinking "glad they got that out of their system, now they can get serious!"

But that's me. It actually reminds me a lot of the first night at Indio. I was thinking the same thing then. I would bet tonight's show BLOWS this one out of the water.

Any takers???

To explain my original post about night one in the Greek here is my take; having not listened to the show as of yet, but guessing from experience.

Opening with Possum is getting predictable, but backing it up with a sick Wolfman would help.

I love Halley's and Sample and NICU and Bouncing into Antelope would have been just like the old days, which is kinda my central point.

Disease as second set opener, sooooooo been there. Love that song, but I have heard it so many times . . .

Alaska is great Trey song and Train is about the only thing off Farmhouse I can stand. Neither make great show stoppers IMO, and then Joy, meh.

Tweezer into Fluff, considering how into they were, is just sick. But as much as I love Cup, after Indio I am not so into it. If the Reprise is as sick as dude says, that would have me excited about tonight.

There ya have it. Still betting tonight is off the charts.

ETA: are they streaming the shows from there live???

Makes my spine do crazy things.

stealing is one of their best newbies, if they knocked it out that is a hot way to end the first set, IMO.

oh yea and: but it all works out, i'm just a little freaked out . . .

I hit that link but dont see a stream. On paper, this looks pretty standard. Def agree that Stealing Time is one of their best songs in awhile though.

Theyre saving it for the midwest :X
