Not bad. Not a big fan of contact>slave for an encore, but glad they did it at deer creek.

here is to hoping they are ready to SHRED it at alpine.

Giggy's Wish List:

1) BBFCFM

2) Pebbles and Marbles

3) Round Room

The are firing on all cylinders. They are in epic form. These may go down as the golden years as far as the PHISH legacy forms.
I am as big of phish fan as there is on this board and I fully acknowledge that they are ripping it right now but nothing in live music history can possibly compare to phish 94-96. With fall 1995 being the pinnacle of improv psychediala music. I know they are killing it right now, tight and precise but in those years mentioned they were just all over the place with tight improve and practical jokes mixed in. To be a part of that scene as I was in those times is just something that is unexplainable. If you go back and listen to the entire fall 95 tour nothing and no band can ever match that. In 98 they had a incredible run transitioning to a funky jam band groove but nothing is even close to the insanity that was 94-96. Their creativity is just unmatched during those times. Nothing was off limits. In some songs today its almost like they are scared to keep going deeper because they are afraid they will not be able to finish it. There was a Bowie in 96 that lasted almost the entire 2nd set. it was just musical bliss.

This is true mainly because while it was happening it was so new, so far beyond anything we had imagined before it. December 95 was probably the greatest month in Phish history, and the whole scene was blissed out and more pure back then, so much more positive, so many fewer nasty drugs and wooks. That being said, I still find myself amazed at the level of full-band improv they are at now, and it opens up wonderful possibilities for the future. Im beyond thrilled to be seeing them at ACL in less than two months.

 but "nothing in live music history" not comparing to phish during that period might be overstating things a bit :)Also don't forget summer '93 (August!) and even 1991-92. Seeing this band work their butts off and constantly improve as they slowly hit it big was something special.

Saturday was the best show of the 3 I saw this weekend but last night looked pretty good too.
Bummer I missed ya, never ceases to amaze me how fast time flies at that those shows.last night was interesting. i am not a fan of farmhouse and water in the sky so the first set was meh at best. but then they played BBFCFM--which has been my wish song since they came back--so that was quasi orgasmic as they totally rocked it out; getting to head-bang at phish = best thing EVA--well, almost  and the YEM was tight that followed, so i had no problem with last night's show.that being said, saturday highlights: sweet reba into #### ur face, and one of the best antelopes i have ever seen--and I have seen a few of those. second set was off the friggin' charts. i was in the fourth row right in front of trey so that totally amps it up, but from sloth to bug it was non stop rockin'!! one of the best diseases i have heard, and I LOVE scent of a mule, sneaking was awesome, and then mikes was just gnarly--gordon has been leading this band since they came back this summer if you ask me. and a quinn encore is about the only way they could have ended that show. top 5 in my ~50 shows i have seen, maybe even top 3. and yes, i was there in 94-96 so i feel i can speak to the claim 95 was best eva. those days were awesome, and i even found myself this weekend pining for the old phish-bowl stage sets, but they have become better musicians over the last 15 years and the tightness that comes with that growth can be seen in moments like the antelope and disease we got this weekend.bottom line: DON'T MISS THEM!!!

I dont know who consistently pushed the boundaries more then phish. the dead were never that experimental.I have said this time and time again and I know I will get laughed at but: Pound for pound, all things considered Phish is the greatest band in history. From their concerts, festivals, wide range of genre music, fan interaction, ability to adapt and just the general talent that they have. Certainly no band today has as much talent as phish. I mean damn, they learned Dark side of the Moon in 90 minutes.

I'm guessing your not understanding what I meant by Golden Years. Those mid-90's years were insane and some of the best times in my life. Living in a car, and sleeping whereever I could find a flat spot for my sleeping bag. That was truly and epic time for the music and a social awakening that many of us who were in our mid twenties were feeling. I loved the Dead but I was in the wrong generation to really appreciate them. I grew up with Phish. Since 3.0 has started the circus that has followed them IMO has toned it down, the people are respectful, and the heads are older and more appreciative. We are all grown up too. But the band itself has transitioned from merry band of pranksters to a damn fine improvisational funk, jam, rock and roll band who are focusing on the music than more about themselves. Its a grand time to be a phan and the next 5 years are going to be looked at as some of the cleanest years we've seen. I am calling the Golden Years for lack of a better term.

I dunno about this. The Grateful Dead are responsible, more than any other single act, for laying down what a modern "rock concert" (for lack of a better term) would look like, how it would operate logistically, etc... I can't think of anything more experimental than these, especially given the time during which they occurred. Go back and listen to a Dark Star from '69 or '70 and tell me that was not "experimental" or pushing the boundaries.Another huge boundary pusher in this area was Frank Zappa and the Mothers, whom Phish owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to.

:goodposting: Great show / Great Weather - got there at 4pm and enjoyed the lot for a while.I thought that was a pretty energized crowd - Lot was also packed when I got there more than I've ever seen - Most people walking around begging for tickets. Good luck tonight....

I HAVE to get to another one of these soon.

A friend of mine thats always "in the know" seems to think Halloween will be in Atlantic City, a place called Boardwalk Hall.

Disappointed that Phish isn't making Indio a yearly event. Last year's halloween festival was extremely well run and in an absolutely perfect location (great weather, easy access, beautiful venue).
their base of fans are on the east coast

What a weekend..totally exhausted when I got back on monday, so much so I guess it took 3 more days to even get on the computer with all the time Ive been at work.

Things didnt start out great on my trip out to Deer Creek on friday. Planned on leaving at 8am, didnt leave until around 1030am. Missed my turn onto I-70 and drove about 45 minutes past it before stopping and seeing where I was, so I lost about 1.5hrs total with that move (GPS is next on my priority list of buys now). Hate getting to shows late, didnt get to the campground until like 6-630. The negatives ended there though, as 8/13/10 at Deer Creek was one of the best shows start to finish Ive seen from them. Got my first Ocelot and Curtis Loew. Always love gettin an Axilla and My Sweet One. Chalkdust and Stash werent the best versions ever and def couldve been longer, but were good as always. Walls of the Cave and Possum were a couple standouts of the set for me. With as good as the first set was, the 2nd set & encore was IMO the highlight of my 3 show run. Halley's was too short for my liking, but hey, its still Halley's. The set really took off with killer versions of 46 Days, Maze, and Meatstick. The Maze's have been really been great the last couple years since theyve been back. Finally got my first Fluffhead, and of course that was the ####. I actually have a 2 inch wide opening on the arch of my foot from my sandals scraping against it, and Im pretty sure its because of the rugs I was cuttin during Fluff. Mango and Julius were their typical great selves. Contact > Slave encore?! Not sure Ive ever seen one of those done before, certainly not in person but on paper either. Someone in here said they didnt care for those 2 as an encore, but I loved it. Wasnt at the show the night before so I didnt see that massive encore, but more often than not the encores are your standard Bug's, Wading, Tweeprise, etc, so I will gladly take a Contact > Slave.

And onto Alpine Valley. Hit a ton of traffic and literally like 5 roads we were supposed to take in Wisconsin were completely closed, so we got there at around 630, despite leaving Deer Creek at 10am and getting an extra hour thanks to CST. Longer drive than I remember. 1st set started right where the last night ended. Tube was conspicuously short, but still satisfying. Highlights of the set were clearly Funky ##### > Reba > #### YOUR FACE and Sparkle > Gumbo > Antelope for me. I remember one of the shows last yr at Alpine having a great 1st set Antelope closer, and this one was fantastic as well. 1st set Suzy?!!!1 Maybe its because I was the DD and basically sober by the time the 2nd set rolled around, but I wasnt really feeling the 2nd set all that much. That said, the DWD > Whats the Use was smokin, the Sneakin' Sally was some sweet and dirty funk and great as well. Putting that Dirt into the Mike's Groove nearly ruined it for me, and Ive never liked Bug either (overrated!). Mike was dropping some bombs for much of this set. Most people I was there with felt the 1st set was better as well though, so maybe Im not crazy.

2nd night Alpine was better overall than the previous night I thought. Opened with Tweezer which was a surprise, and surprisingly short (Im not one who loves the 20 minutes songs all the time, but a lot of the songs they usually jam out were noticeably short all 3 nights I thought). On Your Way Down was a nice unexpected song, the Moma and Bowie were both pretty sweet. 2nd set was all killer no filler and was so good it just felt like it went by in no time. Ghost was pretty sick, thankfully got a BBFCFM, 2001 was dope (but again, short), and Oh! Sweet Nuthin' couldnt have been played at a more perfect time. Def my favorite VU tune, and glad to hear Phish (basically) end my weekend with that one.

Id rate them overall as 2nd night Deer Creek >>>> 2nd night Alpine >>> 1st night Alpine...Ive seen about 50 shows, and Id throw that Deer Creek show in my Top 10, maybe Top 5.

Overall, great weekend and Phish right now seems like they just cant disappoint. Im not sure I could handle more than a few shows in a row anymore, just too much partying and excitement to last much longer. We camped for the first time since 2004 as well, and I'll be damned if I gotta do that again. Im too old for that ####.

interesting. all the chatter i was hearing was 1st night Alpine--especially the second set--and now 2nd night JB second set were some of the sickest phish this year. oh well, no accounting for taste.oh yea, rumor mill kicking out three nights @ atlantic city for halloween and four nights for NYE in NYC.this particular mill has been damn accurate as of late, so . . .

I think you said you were like 4th row or something for first night Alpine?? Ive only been anywhere near that close once out of all my shows, and its a totally different experience. Not saying that why you loved that show so much, but it certainly helps.

Dont get me wrong, I still liked 1st night Alpine, but Ive just grown tired of Mike's Grooves and DWD's (although really liked the DWD>Whats the Use here)...The Dirt and Bug also soiled that set for me, pun intended. This set, and 1st set the next night were my least favorite of the 6.

If they combined 1st set, 1st night Alpine + 2nd set, 2nd night Alpine with Oh Sweet Nuthin as well, that definitely wouldve been my favorite of the 3.

...might have to hit up AC for Halloween if that comes to fruition.

i used to get in the front rows all the time back in the 90's, and while it does indeed change the feel, it was how they were playing the songs coupled with the mix that makes me say that set rocked. Sloth opener, gnarly, sick DWD, Scent of a Mule and a great Sneaking, Mike's was sick--and i really would argue he has been the man, at last since they came back this summer--and then a Quinne encore. that rocks. i went down to the front on sunday too, but that first set was a bit of a yawner IMO, Water in the Sky AND Farmhouse?? goodnight. that being said, BBFCFM has been my wish song since they came back, i hadn't heard it since like '95, didnt play in Alpine last year, or in Indio, or MSG, thought I was getting shut out again and then SWEEEEET!! so i really loved that moment, but still think the first night was way better.but again, no accounting for taste. the fact that they can have such a range of effects on peeps make them all the cooler IMO. probably not doing halloween again this year, but very good chance i will be in NYC for NYE!!!

rumor mill has them doing a midwest tour in Nov-Dec including texas then back to NY for NYE. and for the record this same rumor mill more or less nailed the october dates, so . . . phish has never shown a lot of love the left coast.
