7/6 Set I
First birthday show ever in 18 years of seeing this band. First show since ACL '10, so first real (non-festival) show since Deer Creek '09, and a much needed break only a month after my mom died unexpectedly. Needless to say, I was ready for this one.
RUNAWAY JIM was a totally conventional opener, but played with enthusiasm and intensity. It woke us up right quick. OCELOT and HEAVY THINGS were mellow "warm up" songs to be sure, but they were also played with extra energy and didn't fail to please. BACK ON THE TRAIN was groovy as always, but not particularly adventurous. FUNKY ##### is always fun to hear, and Page for the first of many times this weekend just destroyed it when he took the forefront.
Still a pretty uneventful, if fun and well-played first set. That was about to change.
TUBE is always a welcome song. Cryptic Fishman-penned lyrics present a bit of a zen koan, and a heavy funk jam in the middle. This song and Funky ##### were highly highly sought-after songs to see when I jumped on in in 1994. Tube was maybe once a year, Funky ##### once a tour if that. This song had recently shown signs of resuming its role as a sometimes extended jam vehicle, so I was excited. When the jam hit, a familiar line was present and instantly recognizable... PSYCHO KILLER! Talking Heads on the brain already from the pre-show PA music. Phish has played this four times, in 93, 97, 09, and now. Flawless transition back into Tube and a big celebration in the crowd when they wind up this one to remember. We're then treated to a sideshow from our own little troll Fishman. The BAH cymbals tip off that we will get the first CRACKLIN ROSIE in 13 years. I swear this song is about a blow-up doll (look up the
lyrics) trey weaves psycho killer into the hyhu intro. lots of fun had by all, fishman acts the fool. we love it.
STASH is a typical dark, fractured tension-building jam, that is to say, great. BOUNCIN is a nice anthem now, "sweet" phish, not sick of it like in the olden days. PAUL AND SILAS a nice nod to classic bluegrass, and then HORN, a song I always felt was a letter from the band to us and us to the band. CORRINA is a gorgeous Taj Mahal song and Trey sings it sweetly. LIGHT UP OR LEAVE ME ALONE gives the set finish a very Big Cypress-y vibe as those two songs were major bust outs in the first set down in the everglades on 12/30/99. LUOLMA has an "out there" jam that feels a lot longer than the 4 or 5 minutes it was. Trey botched the end of the jam/song, but it was the jam of the night so far, so the band leaves the stage to a boisterous ovation.
