Encore: Good Times Bad Times

So I recorded last night's XM Sirius Radio broadcast of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center show and am listening to the performance yet again.

In general, this is typically strong Phish. The setlist is an eclectic mix, consisting of old school gems, the better of the new material, and tasty cover songs. (Cities, Peaches, Good Times, Bad Times, Boogie On, and 2001 are some of the best covers they do...the only thing missing was Frankenstein which is my absolute favor cover EVER) They also pay tribute to MCA of the Beastie Boys with the Sabotage encore. The way they creatively quote "Blister in the Sun" by the Violent Femmes in most of the second set was nothing short of musical genius.

But still, almost every song consisted of solos within the established chord pattern of the song. There were no extended segues, no achordal jamming, no forays into the deep end and the unknown. Where are the trips into the ozone like the 30+ minute David Bowie on 12/29/94 in Providence, which I was in attendance for? Ever hear the Bathtub Gin from the Murat on 8/13/93? Or the Stash from Orlando 11/14/95? Or the 11/29/97 Runaway Jim which was over a hour long? Or the Wolfman's from Halloween in Vegas in '98? (another one I was there for)

To some, this may be a *very* small component of the Phish experience, but for me it's unfortunately a critical one. Again, I'm glad that Phish is still out there entertaining folks and making people very, very happy. But I personally need the bold musical forays, or at least the threat that once per tour, on a given night they might launch into a trip into outer space. Since the turn of the century, that sense of risk seemingly just hasn't existed anymore...it seems like they are just content playing it safe. :(

I think playing it safe is a pretty weird way to put it. They have no reason at all to play anything safe. They've had their share of aborts or peeling back too soon but I don't think it's because they want to be safe.

Listening to this set below a few nights ago was pure bliss and rage at the same time. Take out any chunk of it and replace it with a 30 minute Bowie and it's not the same. Some would like it, some wouldn't. To each his own.

Set 2: Chalk Dust Torture > Carini > Sand, Roses Are Free > Punch You In the Eye > Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley -> Ghost > Suzy Greenberg > Run Like an Antelope[2]

Time to go listen to set 2 tonight. Should be fantastic.

Working off this tonight...

Phish: Sun, Jul 08, 2012Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY Set 1: AC/DC Bag > My Soul, Camel Walk, Sample in a Jar, Wilson > Party Time, Gumbo, Nellie Kane, Driver, Foam, If I Could, Split Open and Melt > La Grange

7/6 Set I

First birthday show ever in 18 years of seeing this band. First show since ACL '10, so first real (non-festival) show since Deer Creek '09, and a much needed break only a month after my mom died unexpectedly. Needless to say, I was ready for this one.

RUNAWAY JIM was a totally conventional opener, but played with enthusiasm and intensity. It woke us up right quick. OCELOT and HEAVY THINGS were mellow "warm up" songs to be sure, but they were also played with extra energy and didn't fail to please. BACK ON THE TRAIN was groovy as always, but not particularly adventurous. FUNKY ##### is always fun to hear, and Page for the first of many times this weekend just destroyed it when he took the forefront.

Still a pretty uneventful, if fun and well-played first set. That was about to change.

TUBE is always a welcome song. Cryptic Fishman-penned lyrics present a bit of a zen koan, and a heavy funk jam in the middle. This song and Funky ##### were highly highly sought-after songs to see when I jumped on in in 1994. Tube was maybe once a year, Funky ##### once a tour if that. This song had recently shown signs of resuming its role as a sometimes extended jam vehicle, so I was excited. When the jam hit, a familiar line was present and instantly recognizable... PSYCHO KILLER! Talking Heads on the brain already from the pre-show PA music. Phish has played this four times, in 93, 97, 09, and now. Flawless transition back into Tube and a big celebration in the crowd when they wind up this one to remember. We're then treated to a sideshow from our own little troll Fishman. The BAH cymbals tip off that we will get the first CRACKLIN ROSIE in 13 years. I swear this song is about a blow-up doll (look up the lyrics) trey weaves psycho killer into the hyhu intro. lots of fun had by all, fishman acts the fool. we love it.

STASH is a typical dark, fractured tension-building jam, that is to say, great. BOUNCIN is a nice anthem now, "sweet" phish, not sick of it like in the olden days. PAUL AND SILAS a nice nod to classic bluegrass, and then HORN, a song I always felt was a letter from the band to us and us to the band. CORRINA is a gorgeous Taj Mahal song and Trey sings it sweetly. LIGHT UP OR LEAVE ME ALONE gives the set finish a very Big Cypress-y vibe as those two songs were major bust outs in the first set down in the everglades on 12/30/99. LUOLMA has an "out there" jam that feels a lot longer than the 4 or 5 minutes it was. Trey botched the end of the jam/song, but it was the jam of the night so far, so the band leaves the stage to a boisterous ovation.

Beyond Belief

Opening the floodgates of creativity, Phish redefined possibilities with a second set that elevated this game to a completely new level. Storming out of the gates with nearly 45 minutes of experimental jamming in “Rock and Roll > Ghost,” and continuing with an immaculate “Limb by Limb” and “Harry Hood” that will make a you cry, Phish brought their A+ game to a tour-opener of dreams in Southern California.

As not to sound redundant throughout this piece, allow me to say up front—this was the best I’ve heard Phish play in ages. Last night’s second set was a case study in virtuoso communication and the metaphysical explosions that result from such human achievement. Touching on every facet of their sound that makes them the phenomenon we know and love, Phish gave a glimpse into paradise. The best thing you can do for yourself as a Phish fan right now, is to stop reading this review, cancel the next 90 minutes of your life, grab some headphones and bask.
If anyone found my face on the floor of the LBC arena last night, please PM it back to me.

Usually best to let the hallucinogens wear off before attempting a review.
I am assuming that was done by Mr Minor. The dude certainly has issues.
Yep. Guy is a major tool, but his blog is an great resource.
I have no idea who that is, but he kinda sucks.Like the looks of set one and I imagine set two was a jamfest.
His writing is annoying, but there is a lot of great content on his blog music wise. His "No Spoilers" download series is awesome.

Watching the webcast from Oakland, CA, kind of embarassing. Tix were $300 on Stubhub yesterday. Hard to justify it, that being said if any Bay Area folks (Fro) have an extra ticket on Saturday or Sunday, I am ready to go.

Anyone got a stream for tonight? Looks like a strong start.
:goodposting: i can't find it on uStream.
Hopefully we can find something for tomorrow at least. Did you hit the Long Beach show (you're in Southern Cal right?) Buddy had an extra for that night and this wknd, but I couldn't make it (I'm in Chicago). After the set lists I've seen I should've quit my job, looks great and hear they're killing it.If ya find a stream let me know, I'll do the same.

Long Beach show was as good as the hype. I was on the floor, but didn't see Bieber.Go here for tonight's ustream (audio only). DWD 2nd set opener playing now.
Yeah, I got it. I appreciate it. Thinking we get a strong cover this set, maybe a Terrapin for Jerry? At the Dead's old stomping grounds.

2nd set kinda hit and miss, that was a short antelope, and the chalkdust lacked energy. Plus any set with wading is lame, I'll turn it off if they play Caspian

True, guess there's a lot of weekend left, gotta hold something back. Hopefully we get a strong encore. Was really hoping to catch a Divided Sky tonight. Guess I'll have to fire up the best Sky ever (and maybe the best song ever) 94 Halloween (maybe 95), whatever, its always great.

ETA: Guess that was the encore, missed the break. Decent show, can't wait for tmrw.

I would think you could trade a Jason package straight up for a ticket pretty easily if you get down there early enough today.
