***Official Pirates 2016*** - Home of the Defending Stanley Cup Champs (1 Viewer)

93.7 guys had the same question.  They played Hurdles response.  It was long, but understandable why he did it,  You may have to search for the interview.  It was too long for me to accurately answer.  But it was certainly reasonable.  Something about not having enough pitchers, blah blah blah.
Oh ok that makes some sense.  I guess he was banking on Rodriguez to tie or win the game right there.

Yeah, he pretty much wanted him to swing away.  I didn't have a problem with the call after I heard his response to it.  It was very detailed, so it wasn't like he had just made it up right then during the interview.  There were many scenarios he had before that at-bat, and chose that one.

Kind of bullcrap to send them to Colorado on a day off in the middle of a homestand, especially after a night game (that happened to go extra innings). Just saying.

Taillon could be the savior that we are looking for.  Not sure if/when Glasnow will be ready this year given his control issues.

Well pens won the cup, Steelers going to be really good. Pirates right now...stink beyond belief. No way they get wild card with that hideous bullpen.

It's more than just a bad bullpen.  The rotation is awful.  They have 3 guys in the rotation (Nicasio, Locke and Niese) who shouldn't be anywhere near a rotation.  Liriano has been a colossal disappointment and even Cole hasn't stepped up as that legit # 1 ace that we were hoping for at this point in his career.  Taillon and Glasnow may become bright spots but who knows

Something also seems off with Cutch.  If he's truly lost a step, this team will struggle big time.  I don't really see them turning things around because they just aren't deep enough in the rotation.  However, I do think the near future is still pretty bright.  The cavalry is coming but we may have to wait a year.

This team just flat out stinks right now.  I don't think they can salvage this year and for that reason I'm thinking they should keep Glasnow down to work out his control issues.  In the MLB thread I mentioned that they should consider trading Cutch but apparently he won't even get us a bag of balls in return

Yeah at this point I'm hoping for a complete collapse.  I don't want them hovering around .500 near the all star break and giving false hope.  They can't compete with this rotation and Cutch playing the way he has been.  Dangle Cutch around and see what they can get.  I would rather this team remain competitive for years to come than try to take a shot this year.

They have to get Liriano out of the rotation. He is an automatic loss every time he pitches, 10 walks 10 hits 8 runs or close to it. And they are worried about Glasnows control, give me a break. Liriano is as bad or worse than Locke at this point, and that's bad.

7 straight wins now and all of a sudden back in the thick of the WC race.  Gotta love the ebb and flow of a 162 game season.  Glasnow for the sweep today.

I could see it coming. Up 3-0 idiot 3rd base coach holds cutch at 3rd on 2 out single. Throw not even close to the plate. Then dorky arrieta & his stupid flat bill cap shuts bucs down after that. Now down 4-3, shocker.

Arrieta in his last 3 starts - 6, 4 and 5 ERs.  I would say the Cubs have a few concerns going into the break.

Hurdle gave that poor kid Schugel the death stare when he came out to the mound, and had to replace him with Melancon. You could almost see the flames coming out of Hurdle's head after the walk to Rizzo.

Can't have Jaso losing ABs

(2 hrs ago) Bell will not play in front of John Jaso at first base, and will likely be going back to Triple-A Indianapolis after Sunday's matchup with the Cubs, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Manager Clint Hurdle said Sunday that Bell wasn't going to take over first base or even play in front of Jaso on a regular basis, so the 23-year-old slugger will likely go back to Indianapolis over the All-Star break. Bell is not in the lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Cubs as Jaso is slotted in at first.

I think the biggest issue with Bell is that the organization doesn't feel that he's ready defensively.  Although I don't know why it would matter to them given how long they stuck with Pedro there.

Another stellar outing from Locke, about 30 base runners allowed in 3 innings. Yet they leave glasnow to rot in the minors. Aj  schugel couldn't retire a 90 yr old woman tonight but no relievers in bullpen. Was a close game but they refused to take him out, mind boggling

They're going to need Locke as they manage the innings of Taillon, Glasnow and Kuhl.  But they essentially have 2 wasted spots in the rotation with Locke and Liriano.  Thankfully Niese is out of the rotation.

2 games out of the wildcard -- are the Bucs buyers or sellers or just stand pat and hope for the best?
I would just stand pat and keep developing the young guys.  The WC is within reach but they'll probably need Liriano and Cole to pitch much better to make any kind of run.

Man I hate this move.  Unless Melancon is a contract mess going into next year or they have one in the minors that is killing it, this really comes off as a season give up move.  Wish they really really shouldn't being doing.

Hate seeing melancon go but had feeling it was inevitable. Going to miss that guy, nothing but awesome the whole time he was here. I'll be rooting for him.

Probably in the minority but I don't mind the trade.  He's a rental so they probably weren't going to get much more in return for him.  They weren't going anywhere with this rotation so they had to trade him.  This isn't a championship team even with Melancon.

What the ####?
Exactly. I could stomAch the Melancon trade but the Liriano trade was a joke.  They replace one ####ty pitcher with another ####ty pitcher but gave away 2 solid prospects (one being a catcher!).  If this year teaches us anything, it should be that good catchers don't exactly grow on trees.  Lost a lot of respect for the organization after yesterday.

Yea, giving up Reese makes zero sense. Wtf.

Hmmmnnn.  Looks like the organization remains in continuous improvement delay-mode.  If they've punted this season despite being within reach of a playoff slot, what are the plans for 2017 with our banged-up catcher slated to earn $9M and J-Hay listed for $7.75M?  If Frazier platoons at second next year with, say, S-Rod next year, is Freese out?  Is Kang out?  Does J-Hay go back to 3B?

Lots of questions and no real insight for us.  McCutchen's status?  Plans for Nova or Hutchison after 2016?  Is Bastardo a candidate for a waiver deal in a few weeks since Rivero looks to be the keeper?  Do we keep Jaso in the lineup though Bell provided such a spark against the Cubs last month?

With the Braves, Reds, and Padres on tap, Bucs could make in-roads.  But subsequent games out West may provide an immediate comedown.  Looks like this loopy ride will last through August.

It might be too little too late but would it be worth taking a feeler on Papelbon?  He was just released today by the Nationals.  He is a mental case though
