But the Royal Rumble was for the championship (I know, once, but still) before it was ever a shot for the championship at Wrestlemania. I actually wish they'd remove that stipulation just so we'd have some drama as to who would win. The last several years, it's been pretty obvious going in who was going to win and there's no fun in that.Courtjester said:

They're certainly both deserving. I'm never quite sure how much it's a WWE HOF and how much it's a pro wrestling HOF. Obviously they've taken the NWA/WCW as their own with Sting and the 4 Horsemen getting in. If all of wrestling history is eligible, the Freebirds are long overdue. The roster is thin right now with all the injuries, but there are some things that are working. Love the Becky/Flair feud. I'm falling in love with Becky.

Subtracted a little from an exciting moment. Jim Ross didn't like to know what was going to happen ahead of time. I wish they would still do that.

It has to mean something more than just a win (nobody cares about King of the Ring), but you make a good point. As JB Breakfast Club mentioned, it seems like the winner is usually rejected by the fans. Everyone has a favorite, so whoever the winner is will be disappointing to the majority of the audience. Better to have a heel win, since they're going to get boo'd anyway. But at WrestleMania you generally want the top babyface as challenger for the title. Or maybe they'll have Reigns retain and defend against Lesnar?

Like I said before, come up with a gimmick match for Fast Lane and have the winner of that fight the winner of the RR for the title shot. That gives them a bit more wiggle room if they get the RR winnner wrong and legitmizes Fast Lane a bit.

I hate Stephanie too, but in a good way. She's wonderfully annoying. She's been a little hit or miss lately, but usually she's very good. I loved the line she had on Raw after Reigns beat the crap out of HHH at the PPV. "Other than my money and education, I'm just like all of you".

I caught some of TNA on POP TV last night. 
They didn't say where they were from other than "the entertainment capital of Pennsylvania" The crowd in like the first six rows were bathed in klieg lights for TV, but rest of the arena was pitch dark. Christy Hemme was doing interview segments from in the crowd. (How she didn't get groped is beyond me.)
Apparently, Beer Money reunited last week and they had a "beer bash" in the ring. What an uncomfortable segment; it looked like they were sent out there with instructions to just wing it...and they did. Eric Young (whom I cannot stand) comes out to go Old Yeller on the segment. Watching Eric Young wrestle as a heel after being Odious Comic Relief for so long is like finding out Jar Jar Binks became Darth Vader. Apparently EY and Roode have been fighting over the "King of the Mountains" title - which looks a whole lot like the Legends title belt they gave to Booker T.
Later, they gave Mr. Anderson his own interview segment called "HUH?" He interviewed Matt Hardy with his wife and infant son in tow. This segment was even more uncomfortable. They kept using a ringside camera that left the impression they were waiting for Mrs. Hardy to uncross/recross her legs in hopes of getting an upskirt shot. I can see why Hardy married her...it's a wonder Mrs. Hardy can stay upright based on the size of her funbags.
Oh, and Kurt Angle is doing some time of retirement tour.

I'm beginning to think most wrestling promotions just can't write and book a good story line anymore. The indy fed I'd go to in MD was pretty much old school booking and wrestling, but you had a chance to invest in the storylines. I can count on maybe 1 hand the number of times I threw my hands in the air at a WTF moment. I do that at least three times before a wrestler gets thrown out of the ring on RAW leading to a commercial break.

Yeah Beer Money (Bobby Roode and James Storm) just reunited. Back when they were together at their peak, there's little doubt IMO they would have been the top tag team in WWE. Great characters and great workers as well. Their matches with Motor City Machine Guns (MCMG) Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley were among the best series of tag matches I've ever seen. While TNA finally got the clue to let them headline shows they missed the boat big time with capitalizing on their tag division overall. Fairly certain at one time they had the following teams under their roof at the same time: Beer Money, MCMG, Young Bucks, Hardys, Dudleys, Christopher Daniels & Kazarian.

I'm worried about the rumble. Not enough potential surprises? I'm fearing it's basically Reigns or Brock winning it an outside chance HHH is in it.
With a bunch of fodder like Konnor and Victor.
I do hope Cody Rhodes enters and then StarDust plays dumb the next night.
Was hoping for 40 people so they could have a bunch of surprises. Roster isn't deep enough for that.

Roman Reigns - the champion and favorite
Brock Lesnar - favorite 1A
HHH - biggest potential "surprise"/heel winner
Bray Wyatt - over enough if WWE wants to pull the trigger
Kevin Owens - some slight hints that Vince likes him - full sellout to win the belt?
Sheamus - been a very loyal soldier for WWE and looked like a legit champion just last month
the Undertaker - if he works Mania, he's going to be near the top of the card. One last ride?
Dean Ambrose - might be the most over face in the company
Big E - New Day can push to the top of the card as a dominant stable
Alberto Del Rio - been booked very strong since his return
Next tier:
Rusev - needs to carry a secondary title first
Jericho - hotshot and have him drop it at Fast Lane
Big Show - character is beaten down, but it's easy to rebuild him for a short run

Outside of Big Show, I could buy any of these guys as champ, short-term or otherwise. It is a lot more believeable for someone to win the title in the Rumble than by defeating a champ by pin or submission. How epic would a short-term Big E. reign be? Or finally, the ascension of Bray Wyatt? Or a victory lap for Jericho or Taker? Many of the not-so-obvious outcomes would be much more invigorating than Reigns (who is growing on me) or Brock (who is always must-watch).

You have to think with WM being in Texas, you have to work in a Stone Cold element somehow. I don't think his body would hold up in a match, but roll him out as a manager of some team or something. You have to put butts in Jerryworld and he always does that.

My thought if you're crowning the champ at RR, wouldn't you want to see them carry it at least to WM? Why go thru a whole RR to win it, only to drop it 3 weeks later? I imagine you'd want a little bit of shine to a brief run, otherwise it has the look of Tommy Rich's NWA title tenure.

There's arguments both ways. I want the Rumble to feel unpredictable and would sacrifice a short reign for something invigorating. Of course, if it's someone like Show, Axel, or someone like that, it's just too boring or too screwy.
The Royal Rumble used to mean something. It used to be the #1 show that promoted a new challenger, or a huge push to an unexpected star. That was what made it fun and unpredictable. As of late the Rumble has basically been pointless at best, and infuriating at worst, all because of either terrible winners, or winners winning in awful fashion. the last good Rumble was in 2012, and the last great one in 2010.
Last year, Roman Reigns was the obvious favorite, and while I had no problem with him winning, the manner in which it happened was awful. He basically did nothing but lie on the ground until it was time to win, and even then he needed Big Show and Kane to turn on each other just to have a chance. He wasn't going to be the fans choice regardless, but him winning in such a manner, made him look like a loser, especially when the crowd even booed The Rock because of his relation to Reigns.
In 2014, Batista was the obvious favorite and won. The was awful, because he was being booked as a face, despite being very unpopular, and because the winner was going to face Randy Orton, who had had about 100 matches with Batista already. Interestingly, that night would have been a perfect night to have Reigns win. The crowd would have been 100% on board with it, and they still could have had the eventual Shield/Evolution feud.
In 2013, John Cena won, in what was probably the most meaningless Rumble of all time. Everyone knew Cena-Rock 2 would happen. It didn't need the WWE title in it at all, and basically sacrificed the greatest title reign of the last 25 years for nothing. It was especially bad, because if somebody like say, Ryback had won, by eliminating Cena no less, he would have been hugely over.
2012, Sheamus won. That was great(and I'm not a Sheamus fan by any means) because he was at best the 4th or 5th most likely candidate. I mean Orton, Jericho, Miz and maybe even Cody Rhodes seemed like more likely winners at the time. That win, basically made Sheamus a main event fixture(for better or worse) for the next 3-4 years.
My point is, this year I think the Rumble needs an upset, or at least a surprise winner. I'm not saying Bo Dallas should win, but Reigns, Lesnar or HHH would be a waste of a good opportunity. If we are building to a Reigns-Lesnar rematch or a Reigns-HHH match, there is no reason for the title to be involved. These matches already sell themselves. Besides the Undertaker, and potentially a suddenly cleared Daniel Bryan, those are the only people currently available, who don't need stakes to get people interested. The belt will be needed for another feud.
In my opinion, there are 3 good options to win the rumble:
1. Kevin Owens, he beat Cena, he was essentially dead even with Reigns, and is the best true heel they have. A title run would benefit him a ton, and open up and entirely new line of potential challengers. I think he can be put against anybody, but your best story is probably against either Reigns or Bryan.
2. Dean Ambrose, is the most over full time performer on the roster, and could tell an excellent story, especially if he eliminates Reigns(whether on purpose or not) to win. He's more a candidate in the vain of HBK, where he isn't dominating, but just keeps finding ways to not get eliminated. Plus, a large part of his arsenal is bouncing off the ropes in some way or another, you could play it up as a niche skill that favors him over others, again just like Michaels was. Plus, assuming Reigns-HHH is happening, I think Ambrose-Lesnar at Mania could be amazing if done right. Basically similar to Lesnar-Reigns, but with a better seller, and way more crowd support.
3. Bray Wyatt, if you listen to the crowds, they desperately want to take Wyatt seriously, but you never can, because he never wins anything. He's been nothing more than a clever, but empty threat his entire main roster run. This could go 2 ways, because I truly believe there is not a better potential anti-authority character they could have. He could win the title and be a monster heel, or win and be a shades of grey face, as a sort of avatar for the disenfranchised, which is what he was in NXT. If you go Lesnar-Reigns 2, I think Wyatt-HHH could be a very interesting story.
3 other options could be good, but are seemingly bigger longshots:
1. Daniel Bryan, the crowd pop would be incredible, and he'd help put butts in Jerry World, plus if they don't think he can stay healthy enough to carry the company, he can always just drop the title at Mania, just like Flair did when he won the title in the Rumble. It feels like they are trying to throw people off of this happening with all the rumors out there. Would love a Bryan-Lesnar MMA style match at Mania.
2. Dolph Ziggler, this would require more finesse, but if you played it like Mysterio when he won, where he just survived more than anything else, you've got yourself an extremely over sympathetic babyface, who both casual and niche crowds want to see succeed. Not sure who you'd put him against for the title though, HHH maybe? Play up the feud as Ziggler always being held down behind the scenes?
3. Chris Jericho, I sort of hate the idea of a part timer winning it, but I'll make an exception in Jericho's case, because he doesn't carry the same cache that Lesnar or HHH, or even Batista carry. He's still be a surprise or an upset. I'd prefer if it were weren't somebody on the downside, but if they are afraid to push someone new, this is as good a choice as there is. Also, gets him away from New Day, and they should never ever interact again.
Couple other thoughts:
*The Charlotte-Becky Lynch feud is currently the most interesting thing on Raw for a bout the last month. Is it wrong that I 100% want to see Becky beat up Ric Flair? I'm just glad this isn't a story about someone being fat, or ugly, or jealous of someone's boyfriend.
* Finn Balor should debut at the rumble, and get a huge entrance, which means its best if he draws #2. Especially if #1 is somebody important, but not too important, who can serve as a good base for Balor's offense. Stardust would be good, but since they don't seem to take him seriously, maybe Del Rio? Balor shouldn't win, but should last 30+ minutes, and have 1 major elimination. Maybe Sheamus?
* I really like the idea of Reigns and Lesnar dominating, but being so consumed by one another, that they either eliminate each other, or are dumped out at the same time by someone else who they aren't paying attention to. Which seems like a perfect way for Kevin Owens to win to be honest.
*HHH shouldn't be in the Rumble. If he's this evil authority figure, it really undermines that if he wins the title in in a match where there are no rules and you can't really cheat. Why would he be the bad guy if earns the title? If he comes out during the match to distract Reigns, leading to Reigns being thrown out, to help set up a Reigns-HHH Mania match, i'd be fine with that.

Stardust would be good, but since they don't seem to take him seriously, maybe Del Rio? Balor shouldn't win, but should last 30+ minutes, and have 1 major elimination. Maybe Sheamus?
* I really like the idea of Reigns and Lesnar dominating, but being so consumed by one another, that they either eliminate each other, or are dumped out at the same time by someone else who they aren't paying attention to. Which seems like a perfect way for Kevin Owens to win to be honest.
*HHH shouldn't be in the Rumble. If he's this evil authority figure, it really undermines that if he wins the title in in a match where there are no rules and you can't really cheat. Why would he be the bad guy if earns the title? If he comes out during the match to distract Reigns, leading to Reigns being thrown out, to help set up a Reigns-HHH Mania match, i'd be fine with that.

Not a surprise to any wrestling podcast listeners, but it's amazing as to how bad Peter Rosenberg is as a wrestling podcast host. He's actually gotten infinitely worse in the last year. Not only does he show up to his own show to get informed by his cohosts as to current wrestling news during the show, but he still genuinely believes he's such an informed insider.
David Shoemaker is great, but it's embarrassing to see him hitch his wagon to Rosenberg every week. Sad.

I guess it depends on how they play it. If you want to give somebody a shot in the arm with a brief title reign with a foretaste of a longer reign later, I think it would be great. Kevin Owens in that role would be great. If you're going to lift Bray Wyatt out of what travdogg just called him being "empty threat", then that would give him some gravitas and open up the world title picture to another person. You could also do it for Jericho or UT as a last hurrah - with UT you'd have to be careful how he drops it because he'd almost have to do it at Fast Lane because you want him to win at WM.

We need another 1-2-3 KId beating Razor Ramon moment. And why not? There's simply no one outside of Reigns/HHH/Lesnar that are built up enough to come out with the belt. I simply refuse to believe they'll throw the belt on Owens and try a Lesnar program at Mania. Just not realistic looking having a sub 6 foot fat guy (dont believe the billed height) vs. Lesnar.I just don't see it with Ambrose. What is his character? A lunatic? He really just overacts terribly. Brian Pillman came across as a lunatic.......Dean Ambrose, not at all. Good hand. I've never seen a main eventer with him personally.
If the right story was there, I could see doing something with Bray. And I don't disagree he'd be the guy most capable of making the leap. There's simply not anything interesting that could be built with him (as a solo) between Rumble and Mania......to keep things continuing to roll. It's just terrible creative that they've not gotten Bray high on the card as a singles guy. They've made him irrelevant for so ####### long, pushing him to the top all of a sudden (ala Sheamus) just doesn't come across as realistic and IMO with the creative future plans will flop.
