***Official Rap/Hip Hop Discussion Thread*** (1 Viewer)

I'm an Ol' School rap fan.  The new Tribe album is dope.  Need to check out the new De La album, heard it's fly.

Has O.G. Genasis been mentioned yet?  One of the few new jack rappers that I will listen to.

listen almost daily. the male DJ can be annoying and i tried to leave messages for them about what i want to hear and their voice mail is broken, but they play some good stuff. they also play some terrible stuff, but i guess playing 24 hours a day they need a larger catalog. but yes, this was needed
107.9 switched to like praise or gospel music or something several months ago. :kicksrock:

How do I live with only sirius and spotify?

I've always found it hard to put together an all-time greatest rappers list because so many of the greats are parts of groups whose classic collective works are inseparable.  So, here is my all-time greatest rapper list that includes group acts as single artists while also taking into account their solo projects in the rankings.  My top rappers within each group are ranked in parentheses.  My rankings are based on four equally-weighted categories: (1) lyrics; (2) flow, (3) beats, and (4) consistency and depth of the entire catalog.

1.  Outkast (Andre 3000, Big Boi)

2.  Run the Jewels (Killer Mike, El-P)

3.  2Pac

4.  Nas

5.  Biggie

6.  Wu-Tang Clan (Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon)

7.  Kendrick Lamar

8.  N.W.A. (Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E)

9.  Rakim

10.  Eminem

11.  Jay-Z

I have still never gotten to listening to RTJ. I know from your posts you've always been big on them (hence #2 lol). Give me like your top 5 songs for me to start off with.

Why wasn't Freeway more popular?

I heard this a few minutes ago and got hyped.

Freeway killed it on that album.

That never left my car stereo in '03. Pure fire.

Roc The Mic from State Property has to be one of the best singles in hip hop/rap in the aughts -- oooooooooooooooooh. child.

eta* That I could rap this -- What We Do -- song almost verbatim gave me street credibility in '12 when I could've used less of it. Good times.

I don't remember the underground buzz after The Infamous released. Was Shook Ones bigger upon release or after 8 Mile?
One of the most iconic songs in hip hop long before 8 mile.  Will still say The Infamous is the best album outta Queensbridge.

Shook ones was huge.  In fact, Mobb Deep ran the underground mixtape scene for years in addition to having big records and great major label albums.  Truly one of the greats.  RIP P

Shook Ones is one of the songs I remember fiending for.  I had a decent collection of VHS tapes from music videos I would record.   I remember sitting there with the remote just waiting for them to play it.   I think I broke some kind of world record for reaction time from seeing it playing to hitting the record button.

IIRC, I got it from one of those off brand Friday/Saturday night shows and not BET/MTV proper.  Urban Expressions was the name, on WGTW.  They used to play kung fu flicks on Saturday mornings/afternoon too.

channel 48!

Just got done working out and listening to the new DJ Khaled album. That's a workout playlist in itself- banger after banger and nearly everybody is on it: Drake, Future, Ross, Minaj, Migos, Kodak, 21 Savage, Young Thug and more. It's a fun album.

also he gave his baby son Asahd writing credits on the album so his son can collect royalties on it.
