I'll try it a few more times then. I didn't get it. Thought the flow was disjointed and a lot of the lines were pretty weak.

Like someone said above, he's taking an L for this. He clearly didn't have enough material on MGK to really put something congruent together. It was disjointed and clunky IMO

Every line of Kill shot is basically a response to specific lines in MGKs diss.

it is actually quite focused.

For those who do like Jay-Z (we know I'm a big Hov mark), where do we rank his albums? I've been going through them recently and struggling to compare Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint and The Black Album. Not sure there is a skippable song on any of them. Is there one I'm missing with nothing skippable?
Everything after Black Album is severely diminished quality. So, everything after '03.....okay I'll say '04, only cause I'm still a huge fan of the Linkin' Park collab lol.

When you think about it, for as highly as Jay is generally regarded, his prime was an incredibly average 5 or 6 years controlling the genre.

Not a huge HOV fan but Black Album and Reasonable Doubt for me.  I also think that Unlplugged album with The Roots doesn't get enough love.  Really just f'd with a few tracks here and there off the other albums.  He's great at making hits but his later works bore me.

Jay-Z's three that I listen to are Blueprint, Black Album, and Reasonable Doubt, in that order. I don't really listen to the later stuff, so I have no point of reference upon which to draw.

Kill Shot was weak.  The only hot line in it was when he compared MGK to Lil Tay.   Also, why bring up the Diddy killing Biggie then say I'm just kidding?  Stupid.
Diddy produces MGK. You know Diddy is going to be pissed at Em bringing that rumor back into the limelight. It's a direct shot showing how Em can ruin MGK by pissing his boss off for MGK getting into it with Em.

And Binge was god awful. MGK had more attention now then he's ever had, and he released that autotuned, piece of ####. He got pissed that Em called him a mumble rapper then proceeded to release a few songs that are legit mumble rapping.

"It's your moment
This is it, as big as you're gonna get, so enjoy it
Had to give you a career to destroy it"

@rockaction will be so happy.

Yeah, I've seen that article, just in different form (I think it was in the Guardian, or at least an article about the study). Aesop's Skelethon is a masterpiece, IMHO, and it rewards me every time I put on. It's so lyrically dense and the beats just go crazy at times. Thanks for the shout out, Long Ball Larry. Always like seeing an article about him.

Love me some Aesop as well.  Never got into Skelethon however.  I'll give it another chance. Labor Days and None Shall are probably my favorites.

i dig it.  i was on aesop since i got a burned copy of Float right when it came out in college.  he's a little too much for me to listen to a lot of it at once or a lot of the time, but i am a fan.

I can't over how good Sicko Mode is. I haven't heard anything like it maybe ever. It's not cool to enjoy the mainstream new stuff, but I don't care. Song of the year for me right now. God tier.

And yes, I'm exaggerating a bit but I don't know how a song tops it for me in 2k18. Worth a listen to anyone who hasn't checked it out. And yes, Drake is featured on, but don't let that discourage you. It's swerves way left.
Video out today.  Stargazing has really grown on me.

Youtube's algorithm pointed me to his "Don't Play" video... that has a good ?

Odd to say but I am digging Peep, XXX, etc. It's not even rap- more like an extension of of Blink 182 but this is good music.

Right now I think the songs of the year for me as far as mainstream/popular/radio release rappers would be from the group below..

In no particular order

If you've shunned all new stuff, maybe give my 10 faves a try ?‍♂️

Kendrick/SZA - All The Stars (best hook of the year, Kendrick's verses are admittedly a little wack)
Logic - Everybody Dies (still brand new, bit this is a nice one)
J. Cole - ATM (love this, not his best work but his best from this year)
Travis Scott - Sicko Mode (one of my favorite tracks in years, the best of the year for me)
6ix9ine - Gotti (it's not like his other stuff)
Khalid/Ty Dolla Sign - OTW (this is more R&B stuff)
XXXTentacion - SAD! (most of you will find this terrible I'm sure but it grew on me)
Nas - Cops Shot The Kid (best from Nas' album, good beat, good verses)
Blocboy JB / Drake - Look Alive (more of a banger for the gym)
Post Malone - Rockstar (the best come-in/beat drop of the year - actually some good lyrics too from Post - GREAT song, second only to Sicko Mode for me)

That's actually a specific diss track now that I listen to it, and it's both generically and specifically the harshest thing I think I've heard. It's nuts. He even plays identity politics at one point, telling people that expectations of black and white people by black and white entertainers is different. He basically accuses them of minstrelism. That's a serious accusation.

It's actually the hardest hitting diss I've ever heard.

And I think the piano beat in the background is lifted from M-E-T-H-O-D Man, though I could be hearing things.

Ill have to check some of these that i havent heard.  I still got Royce's album(the book of ryan) as the best of this year.  I havent heard anything better.

Joyner Lucas dropped a new song / video called Love It which is part of his new album ADHD that is not released yet. I guess also on the album will be another collab with Em.

after a few listens to this song it is growing on me as chorus was a little repetitive at first but I really like Joyner's flow

I actually like it a lot but I purposely left it off. I just wanted to highlight some of the younger generation of rap music that us old men at FBGs sometimes lament. If you dig around in there, you'll find some good stuff.  A large majority of it is crap but these were all hits and all were worthy of being so IMO.

Video is great. So glad they made one.

My (almost) 14-yo daughter is very in to all of these artists.  It's not bad, though it's a little tough to listen to in the car.  I always get confused about what to allow language wise even though i don't restrict her spotify account at all when i'm not around.  not sure whether allowing it in the car "promotes" it or not, even though it's probably irrelevant in the end.

For people your daughters age, I think Post Malone is pretty iconic as an artist. The only comparison I can compare is to Eminem for people like me in their mid 30s. Following and loving everything they do.

His stuff is sort of tame compared to the harder stuff out. That Khalid song I posted is completely fine and just good R&B music. XXXTentacion is rather dark though and depressing.

I am a big proponent of letting kids listen to what they want. I was consuming everything from Dr Dre to Frank Zappa to Jazz music as a kid and my parents were great at allowing me the freedom to understand the difference between the stuff in the music and what's appropriate in real life. I was very into gangster rap and have never in my life even received a speeding ticket. Anecdotal, I know, but if your child has a good head on her shoulders, I think you're doing the right thing letting her have free reign over her Spotify account.

Was kind of a rough weekend for me. For some reason I got deep into some of the emo-rap-third wave stuff mentioned above and it’s hypnotically depressing. I knew Peep and XXX had died but I read a lot more about their short lives and deaths. Real dark stuff. Then I found this AM that Friday night a student of mine was shot dead in Detroit. Same thing happened to his dad 16 years ago too. It’s grim as hell man.

Wow, man. Condolences. There's not much to say. Always here if you need it.

I’m all good. He was a real nice kid, had his life pretty well together for 19, just having graduated HS. Had a job and a girl he wanted to marry. I feel bad for his little brother. It’s got to be real screwed up for him. Detroit can be a dark cruel place.

Yep, that video is next level.  I downright loathe Drake and still FF through his verses but everything else about that track/video is hella impressive.

I think she'll be ok.  I was listening to NWA, Geto Boys, Quik, 2 Live Crew etc around that age and turned out fine.  If my Mom prohibited me from buying tapes with that Parental Advisory sticker, I'd have found a way.    The only rule we had was no rap with bad words when rolling in the Grandparent's whip.  One of the positives about mumble rap is most folks have no idea what they're actually saying so I guess that's a good thing.
