I wonder if we get a live version of Caden or Ezra in any of these movies?  I also wonder if we see any sith lords (DV) or jedi in Rogue 1.

The Rebels timeline is matching up nicely to make Ezra a bad guy somewhere down the line

Plans for a moon-shaped battle station were first developed by the weaponsmiths of Geonosis for use by two malevolent Sith Lords, Darth Sidious and Darth Tyranus, in the waning decades of the Galactic Republic.[1] Its design, centered around a superlaser array using massive kyber crystals, was inspired by a technology developed by the ancient Sith.[9]

Ten years after the Invasion of Naboo, Tyranus was at the head of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, a secessionist movement on the brink of the war with the Republic. That year, the Republic ended up sending its newly-acquired army of clone troopers to Geonosis, which started the Clone Wars. The conflict had in fact been provoked by Sidious, who secretely manipulated both sides: he himself led the Republic under his public persona of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, while his acolyteTyranus led the Confederacy as Count Dooku. With the invasion of Geonosis by the clones, Geonosian leader Poggle the Lesser turned the designs of their "Ultimate Weapon" over to Dooku for safekeeping, not knowing of the man's alter ego and ties with Sidious.[1]

As the war raged on, the Ultimate Weapon saw construction over Geonosis. By the time the three-year conflict came to an end, workers had partially completed its framework. As the war ended, Darth Sidious got rid of his Confederacy puppets, including his own apprentice, and proclaimed the birth of a new, authoritarian Galactic Empire, anointing himself Emperor. The Ultimate Weapon project was immediately appropriated by the nascent Empire.[10] Access to Geonosis was restricted, and very few members of the Imperial hierarchy were allowed to know about the project.[11] Tiaan Jerjerrod, an architect and starship designer from Tinnel IV, was enlisted to help build the megaweapon.[12] Despite construction moving ahead, not all Imperials believed in the viability of the project, with some voicing protest over what would later become known as 'Tarkin's folly.' General Jylia Shale was one of many that voiced protest against its development, only to result in her input being marginalized over the coming years.[13]

The construction of the Death Star continued above Geonosis in utmost secrecy, with the Empire utilizing construction modules[14] operated by Wookiee slave laborers and various other species to complete the project.[13] To protect the battle station during the long construction phase, a network of bases was established. Initially, supervision of said bases was entrusted to Vice Admiral Rancit, who oversaw them all from Sentinel Base. However, Rancit was replaced by Wilhuff Tarkin at some point after the Antar Atrocity. During his tenure as supervisor of the Death Star project, Tarkin had to face many difficulties, from supply problems and attempts at sabotage to missed engineering deadlines. However, Tarkin proved that the Emperor had been right to assign him to that project. As a reward for his efficiency, Tarkin was made the first Grand Moff of the Empire, and given greater control over the project.[8] At some point during its construction, the station was moved from Geonosis to another base, and in order to keep the project a secret, the entire Geonosian species was wiped out. Three years before the Battle of Yavin, one of the modules used during construction was used by ISB Agent Kallus to ambush a group of rebels, who were on a mission to find out what the Empire was building above the planet, however, their attempt failed and the Rebels managed to escape.[14] Kyber crystals were also scoured from across the galaxy in order to construct the station, with the Separatist Alliance doing so near the end of the Clone Wars only to have the attempt be sabotaged on the Outer Rim world of Utapau by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker,[15] while a band of Lothal rebels managed to attack an Imperial supply convoy carrying the crystals five years before the Battle of Yavin, destroying them in the process.[16]

The massive construction project was completed nearly twenty years after its conception during the Clone Wars, and at some point was rechristened as the Death Star.Imperial Navy pilots and military personnel were eventually assigned to the station shortly before it was revealed to the public, being new enough to still be labeled as classified.[7] Three weeks later, Imperial forces commanded by Darth Vader captured Imperial Senator and rebel sympathizer Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan who had received the technical readouts for the Death Star from Rebel agents after a major battle, and intended to pass them along to her allies.[4]

As a high-value prisoner, Organa was moved to a detention block aboard the Death Star, where she was interrogated in order to learn the location of the Rebellion's secret base. Faced with her considerable resistance to Imperial interrogation techniques, Tarkin opted to try a different approach: intimidation. In a move calculated to force Organa to reveal the Rebel base, Tarkin threatened to use the station's primary weapon to destroy her homeworld. Though she ostensibly relented and supplied the rebel base's location as being on Dantooine, Tarkin ordered the attack to move forward in order to demonstrate the military power that the Empire now held. In a matter of moments, the Death Star destroyed the planet Alderaan, leaving no survivors.[4]

Immediately after the planet's destruction, the Star Detroyer Devastator left the station and a small Imperial force was sent to investigate Leia's claim under the command of General Cassio Tagge.[17] Upon arrival in the system however, it was discovered that the base was abandoned.[7] Angered by Leia's lie, Vader and Tarkin conspired to allow Organa to be rescued by a group of outlaws, in order to follow them back to the Rebel base themselves.[4]

I'm actually looking forward to these one-off movies more than the main series at this point. Less weight of expectations, more room for experimentation and different tones.

Well the skeletal frame was up at the end of 3. So probably 10 years after that. Just my guess.

10 years?  So Luke would've been only 10 then when he destroyed the Death Star?

...granted, they didn't really elaborate what point in time it was when they showed the beginning of construction but I would assume it was the sametime Obi Won dropped Luke off with Owen and Verue.

10 years to get it built. It wasn't fully operational till Luke was about 18. Could you imagine all the test trials and debugging that ####### thing would need? 8 years is a low estimate.

 
Side question. 

Should we invest in Disney now, seems like with Star Wars and their model of movies they are going to make billions.  Or have the analysts already factored that into the stock price?

Disney is trading at $96.70, was about $120 back in the summer.

 
So a little off topic but I figure this is a good place to ask - are the animated series worth watching?

To give a frame of reference, I'm probably an intermediate-level Star Wars nerd at best. I only saw TFA twice in theaters, as opposed to the 7 or 8 times the real nerds saw it.

I've never been into any "adult" cartoons that weren't comedies ie The Simpsons, Archer, etc. But I'm willing to try!

It will put the clone wars era in a Much better light than the prequels did. We actually learn a lot about the backgrounds and motivations of all the key players and get a peak into their daily lives. You get a real feel of the war as opposed to jumping in every 5 years or so in the movies.  So if you have the time, it's something you could enjoy.

 
I never saw clone wars but have liked Rebels every time I've seen it (probably about 40% of the episodes).

Star Wars Rebels is on Disney now.  I think they are in the third season.  It's good. It has a lot of characters you would recognize that make appearances (Chewbacca, R2D2, C3P0, Lando, Laia, Darth Vader, Darth Maul etc..).

I'd consider myself at the same level of nerd as you, and I really enjoy the cartoons. 

 
Felicity Jones is awesome. She's gonna be nerd girl Halloween costume... big girl costume. Check your bars on that night for Star Wars geekdom.

I watched most of the Clone Wars and liked it.  Haven't seen any "rebels" yet.  I'm hoping Netflix releases the first few seasons soon since they had the Clone Wars on.

They just finished the second season recently.  3rd season should start in the fall sometime.

We don't even get into how long it would take to hire and vette a staff that is competent enough to operate this massive thing and then train them on their job.

The clones were soldiers. They didn't possess the technical skill to run the various internal systems on a station as massive as the death Star. There's be an enormous amount of civilian support that would need to be hired. Think of that IT team. Christ that'd be a nightmare every day just to keep the thing from falling apart.

In terms of total quality I would put Rebels behind the later seasons of Clone Wars (4 thru 6), but on par with to ahead of the early seasons, and WAY ahead of the Clone Wars movie.

The upside of Rebels is capped because it's on Disney XD.  Some of the best Clone Wars multi-episode arcs got pretty complex and dark, and I don't see Rebels going there, but it's a fun show.

I consider myself a champion for equal rights, be it gender-based, race, orientation, etc.... that said, the whole "female lead" thing does seem a little "forced" (pun somewhat intended).

I don't read the books, so don't know the answer to this.... but was the stealing of the DS plans covered?  Was there a "strong female character"?  If not, yes this does seem a little contrived given our overly-PC current culture.

That said, the female lead does look pretty sexxxayyy... :ph34r:

And most definitely IN.  Another AT-AT attack?  Hell yeah!

And I agree with the assessment that a "standalone" could potentially be real good just based on the fact it doesn't have to fit with a longer storyline.  This could be real good.

99.99% of the books are no longer canon so the story is wide open to do what ever they want.

Arguably the best battle out of the original trilogy was the Battle of Hoth.  AT-AT walkers are the ####.

I am not sure it is done to be PC imo.

I think it is done to maximize profits.  The more girls that are interested in Star Wars, the more money they will make.

Katniss proved to be a huge box office character and Rey reemphasized that box office draw, so this is likely more of a business decision than a PC decision imo.

My kids are 5 (girl) and 3 (boy).  For the past 6-7 months I've opened up my laptop to let them watch the 10-ish minute YouTube clip of that battle.  They love it, and it features just about every central character so they have a frame of reference when they look at the poster in my office (I have a beautiful, original Empire Strikes Back poster from Argentina) or play with a few of the toys I've bought them.

I think I did the same with my VHS recording of Empire when I was a kid.  Loved those walkers.

 
Looks great.  Tone seems a little different than previous Star Wars movies which I think is a real bonus to these spin-offs.

"With Gareth Edward's directing, I'd actually be really okay if they treat Darth Vader like he did with Godzilla by hiding him and building up to him throughout the whole movie. "

"I'd pay to see this.... Make a straight monster movie out of Vader. I remember being terrified of him as a kid. Keep him in the shadows, around the corner. Just let the subtle sound of his breathing act like the Jaws theme. "
