*** Official *** Rogue One - A Star Wars Story (1 Viewer)

Was good not great.  Liked the ending.

Without the Force would have liked a heavier dose of the other aspects that make Star Wars great. Aliens and set design.  Something on par with the Jaba scenes from previous movies.

Not really any scenes nor battles that were iconic in this one.  The asian duo could have delivered more. The stick is lame.

That said I still liked it a lot.
Thought Vaders attack in that hallway of the ship was money.  Could it have been longer?  Sure...I'd have liked to see Vader do an  Old Boy length fight.....but I think that confrontation really showed how scared the myth of Vader had become to people in the SW Universe.

On another topic......I think the boiggst tragedy is we will never get remastered 4K (hell not even blueray 1080P) of the original trilogy without all the garbage Lucas added in for the special editions.

It is a ####### crime to original Star Wars fans and a serious shame.

Yeah. Trying to think of anything he added to the originals that was good.  All I keep thinking of is that horrid musical scene in jabbas

Grand Moff Tarkin's appearance in the movie wasn't a big surprise but the fact that it was Peter Cushing via CGI caught me off guard. It was so seamless that while watching I thought it must be a real actor that had an uncanny resemblance.

Washington Post article on Peter Cushing CGI for Rogue One

Loved the movie. Tied in nicely with the lead up to New Hope without getting too nostalgic. As others have mentioned it's pretty dark and depressing without the melodramatic acting from the prequels (I'm talking to you Hayden Christensen).
I wonder if his estate is paid as though he's acting.

Nothing. Even the effects that were changed from practical to CGI effects made it worse.

The arrival in Mos Eisley looks marginally better, and it does give more of a look at it - but the additional slapstick (the repair droid "3 Stooges-ing" the security droid, the guy on the speeder bike knocking the jawa off his ride) just made it stupid.

Even the Death Star assault, which does look "better", is made less enjoyable, IMO. When watching it done with practical effects, it's more of a sense of marvel for the viewer as to how the effects artist did it - even though there are matte lines around the ships and the movements are a bit wooden. But when it's a CGI ship, there's no sense of wonder over how long it took the computer to render a frame.

They executed it all wrong.

I rolled my eyes when it turned out to be the Tantive.  Vader was right there mowing dudes down and it escaped? So how does it make sense now in 4 when Leia says they were on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan. Like others have said in here, "No you weren't. I just saw you fly away from a rebel assault on a secret imperial base and I personally watched one of your men hand the plans to someone in your ship."

Like I said though, minor plot hole but otherwise fantastic movie.
I disagree.  She knows she's in trouble, and is just doing what anyone would...lying.   It's not like the Tantive is a custom one-of-a-kind ship.  Jump to light space, evade, and misdirect.

if someone wants to ##### about something, ##### about the fact that he's talking to his daughter, and his mystical "Force" can't show him the connection?  WEAK
I can live with that one. He only senses Obi Wan's "presence" on the Death Star. It's not like he says "Oh snap! Kenobi is here!"

Leia's Force abilities had never been developed so probably hadn't manifested at all for either her or Vader to realize were even there.

don't get me wrong...I can live with it too.  I just laugh at the fanboys trying to pick apart what has become the greatest movie series of our generation.  I flat out loved Rogue One.

I'm sure someone mentioned it, but does the "Holy City" of Jedha - that's the derivative Jedi came from, yes?

We will endure.

You can get a close approximation of the original trilogy in HD if you search for "Star Wars Revisited". I was never able to get it to work, but then I didn't try very hard.

It's pretty significant effort by a fan that has cobbled together original trilogy footage available in HD and put it togther to make an HD copy of the movies.

I think that's why there was that big ### statue of a Jedi sunk in the sand in a couple of the overhead shots.

I'm starting to get the impression that you don't care much for cgi.

A giant statue of a Jedi seems like kind of a very un-Jedi thing, at least the Jedi who are "good."

What if the Jedi were really uncomfortable about it and they were drinking one night and just decided to knock it over themselves.

As I recall it's a HUGE file, but there is a Star Wars "Despecialized" Edition floating around the internets. Apparently people worked on this thing for years to get as close as possible to the original footage in HD.

Man did I enjoy that. The ending had we wanting to jump up and cheer.  I've been waiting for that for a while. Give us a Vader movie already.

Finally saw it, and did not come out of the theater thinking it was even close to Force Awakens.  I really enjoyed the second half, REALLY enjoyed it. But I thought the first 45-60 minutes of setup was rather average. They did a very poor job setting up the characters IMO. I didn't care about Jyn or Cassian and felt extremely "blah"  about Krennic.

But....

That second half... loved almost everything about it.

Rank them: Empire, Hope, Awakens, Rogue, Jedi, Sith (I ignore E1 & E2)

Liked it and more to the point my teen kids liked it (we saw it in IMAX 3D)

- great ending in every way

- would have liked more about Saw and Jyn (to exemplify she was no goody twoshoes)

- was not bothered by the cgi heads. I did notice something was off with Tarkin

- would have liked to learn more about the guardians of the temple

- a bit more about Cassians war crimes would have been nice

- the seems to be an opening both with the empire and rebel alliance as small unit tactics instructor

- don't shoot the wife of your key scientist, use her as a hostage to ensure compliance. Even if you are a death trooper that should be obvious

- the rebel alliance would never have survived as far as RO/ANH with that fractured leadership.

Looking forward to seeing it again, even on the small screen, and similar vignettes will be welcome in my book.

Yeah, the guys with the red robes (were those the temple guardians?) look suspiciously like the Emperor's guards, just with square heads.

Maybe they're corrupted to serve the Emperor?

What if the wife is pointing a gun at you and might use it preemptively?

Looked to me like Krennic told/signalled the trooper to take the shot, then went after the kid as a secondary option for hostage.

She was standing completely still less than 60 ft away. Shoot her effing leg off. These are supposed to be elite troops so don't give me the "it's really hard" bs

If we're back to complaining about the competency of Storm Troopers, everything is as it should be.

Yeah, keep her alive so you have one more character that stays alive and then we can get more complaints about her back story not being told well enough.

Its effin moviemaking, people. Keep the characters you need. Get rid of the ones you don't need. Drive the main characters story ahead by showing her seeing her mom get killed. It's pretty straight forward stuff here, folks.

Kind of hated it. Was really bored. Felt like a cash grab. 90 seconds of Vader ruled, but the rest was meh.

I honestly did not feel impressed by the Vader sequences. James Earl Jones sounds like a shell of himself and Vader just sort of seemed slimmed down...

IDK, prolly just less sensitive to scary dudes than 40 years ago

Thought the first half was slow and confusing  (I was a few beers deep though, so that may have played a part)

Thought the 2nd half was great.

I wish there was a place here for us to make a note on people whose movie reviews shouldn't be followed.

I'm surprised so many people that don't like Star Wars went to see this movie. Guess they were bored.
