Rory is the new #1 in the World. Luke Donald is about as inspiring as Jello. Tiger was on the comeback trail, but came up gimpy at the Cadillac WGC event on Sunday. Stricker is hanging in there, Mr. One-Plane 3/4 swing, but his bread and butter is a Furyk-esque consistency in top 10's. Not a major force. Phil is still around, but is definitely on the back-9 of his career. There is still a logjam of young talent who seem to trade spots on the Ryder cup, and at the top of the rankings, but none of them have the superstar potential like Rory.

Rory has the game, the swing, the smile, and is only 22 years old. He could be what Sergio, Adam Scott et al couldn't be. The heir apparent to El Tigre.

For a 5'10" 165 lb kid, he can pound the ball. Picture-perfect swing, and now with a top-shelf short game. He absolutely destroyed the field at the US Open last year, vindicating his major choke at Augusta earlier in the spring.

I loved Tiger as a high school golfer growing up in the late 90's and 2000's. Admired his swing and dominance. Felt a new force in golf coming. I have a similiar feeling about McIlroy.

I went to the Wednesday practice round of the 09 PGA Championship in the Twin Cities (the one Tiger lost to Yang). Rory was amazing to watch on the range and on the course. Great with the fans, funny as hell between the ropes. On one hole with a lake all along the right side, he got 5 other touring pros to have a skipping contest, blasting stinging 3-irons like round pebbles across a still pond. For a 19-year-old to get multi-millionaires to goof of the day before a major, for the fans' enjoyment, showed me something. He is a leader, and a good guy.

He's fun to watch, no doubt....and has the personality and demeanor to be great. We need him to play more in the States.

Is it now 9/10 top 5's?

DORAL, Fla. — Even though Rory McIlroy felt “flat” when he arrived at this week’s World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship, he felt he could win and on Sunday he nearly did.

McIlroy shot a 5-under 67, at one point getting to within a stroke of the lead, to finish third, two strokes behind winner Justin Rose.

There’s a good reason for McIlroy to feel as confident as he does. In five starts this year, McIlroy has yet to finish outside the top five. He has a win, two runner-up finishes and Sunday finished solo third at TPC Blue Monster at Doral. He’s also No. 1 in the FedExCup standings and No. 1 in the world.

“Yeah, I do,” McIlroy said when asked if he feels like he can win every time he tees it up. “Even when I don’t feel like I’ve played my best or I am playing my best, that’s been the biggest improvement in my game is being able to turn those 71s and 72s into 69s or 68s and keep yourself in a tournament.”

That’s what he did this week. Despite a sluggish start Thursday when he opened with a 1-over 73, McIlroy kept himself in the tournament with rounds of 65 and 67 on the weekend, which included going out in 30 in the third round.

Sunday when everyone else seemed to be struggling early, including overnight leader Bubba Watson, who made three straight bogeys at one point on the front nine, McIlroy was mostly mistake free. He made four birdies in his first 10 holes and with an eagle on the par-5 12th got to within one of the lead.

Two bogeys sandwiched around one birdie over McIlroy’s final five holes derailed his chances, but McIlroy certainly seems to have grown by leaps and bounds in the last 11 months.

”You learn a lot from previous experiences,” McIlroy said. “Masters was a big one for me. I think U.S. Open gave me the confidence to know that I was doing the right things and that I could win the biggest tournaments.

“Confidence, it can do massive things for your game. Even if you’re not playing that great, if you still have confidence in yourself, it makes a big difference.”

Looked it up...its actually 11 top 5s in his last 12 starts. The only miss was finishing 11th at the Dubai Champ in late '11.

It was pretty apparent the first time you saw him swing a golf club that he was destined for great things. Maybe the most beautiful golf swing I've seen from a modern player. The thing that's going to get in the way isn't his talent, it's his head. He's still young, so we'll see.

Just curious...has anybody heard a story about him from Augusta last year aside from what has been written?

Thats what has separated him from other 'can't miss' guys like Duval (going back a few), Garcia, and DJ to me already.

I had a feeling yesterday before the weather delay that he was poised to run away with the PGA Championship. He was draining putts and made some great shots to the green. Rory to me is still a bit of a streaky player, but again he is only 23.

2 in a row. Dominating the FedEx Cup. Topping absolutely stacked weekend leader boards.

Feels like a new top dog that may actually stick.

My Irish buddy who owes my all kinds of $$$ for past Rory bets is gonna try to cash in this season's bets after he joined his bandwagon. He get's pissed when I mention he is from Northern Ireland. My buddy is from Dublin.

:crickets:

He's struggling. His swing looks all types of out of sequence.

I feel like he's taking it a bit outside at the top, then really dropping it inside too much. Reminds me of Tigers swing problems before the change.

He said it. It's his takeaway. That's only going to be compounded by the different way the new ball/new clubs combo make the ball come off the clubface. It'll be telling how he deals with it. Everybody struggles with new equipment.

Tabloid pics of Rory rubbing lotion on Elin on a boat somewhere in the Caribbean with Tiger's kids in the background would be pretty much the best thing ever.

In terms of careers

Rory + 2 majors + nailing Elin > Tiger + 14 majors + nailing Elin

If Rory could get one of Tiger's kid to call him dad on video he would easily get my vote for GOAT.

Wins first tourney as a single guy, smartest move he ever made dropping that anchor.
Too bad he apparently did it in such a pathetic way. Sure, have the guts to stay calm on a golf course, but then break up with your fiance, after sending invites out, by phone in a 3 min dumparoo.

Rory McIlroy - Champion Coward.

Who cares how long the conversation was, would you have been happy if they spent 30 minutes on the phone? The phone part I could see if this was a normal couple but they were often apart due to their schedule.

I could see taking a shot at him if he texted her or had his agent dump her but I don't have an issue with him calling her.

Good enough for me to root against.

Pretty boring sport, so do what I can.
