*** Official Russia vs. Ukraine Discussion - Invasion has begun *** (3 Viewers)

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — The Biden administration said Friday it has decided not to pursue a $10 million reward it had offered for the capture of a Syrian rebel leader whose forces led the ouster of President Bashar Assad earlier this month.

The announcement followed a meeting in Damascus between the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was once aligned with al-Qaida, and the top U.S. diplomat for the Middle East, Barbara Leaf, who led the first U.S. diplomatic delegation into Syria since Assad’s ouster.

HTS remains designated a foreign terrorist organization, and Leaf would not say if sanctions stemming from that designation would be eased. But, she told reporters that al-Sharaa had committed to renouncing terrorism and as a result the U.S. would no longer offer the reward.

“We discussed the critical need to ensure terrorist groups cannot pose a threat inside Syria or externally, including to the U.S. and our partners in the region,” she said.

They have been saying all the right things.... which is very unusual for a Muslim extremist group.... perhaps they have changed? But I am far from convinced. The one thing that does give me pause that this may be at least half true is that I think more than a couple of those that belong to these terror groups are not sold out Islamic terrorist but rather use it as a path to power. Also, the influence of Turkey is helpful to steer them towards a more moderate posture.

All that said, I am happy that Isreal basically destroyed every last piece of equipment that Syria had so it could not get into their hands.

Not directly related to this thread but I believe it is. India has long been the largest importer of Russian military equipment. India is trying hard to establish its domestic ability to produce weapons (as are many countries around the world) but this continues a shift away from Russian purchasing. I think this is due to a few reasons but one of them has to be the fact that Russian military hardware has been shown to be inferior to most of Western and in this case Asian hardware. (The K-9 is widely seen as one of, if not the best self propelled howitzer today).

Top Zelenskyy Adviser Admits the Truth About Corruption in Ukraine: 'People Are Stealing Like There's No Tomorrow'

Johnathan Jones By Johnathan Jones October 31, 2023 at 6:23am
People at the highest levels of Ukraine’s government are lining their pockets with cash as U.S. taxpayers prepare to fund yet another year of that nation’s war against Russia, an adviser to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Time magazine published a lengthy story on Monday about reporter Simon Shuster’s recent visit to the war-torn country in which he shared insights he said he gained into the morale of those leading Ukraine nearly two years after Russia invaded it.

According to an unnamed senior adviser to Zelenskyy, people at the top are “stealing” like there is no tomorrow and Ukraine’s president faces pressure to root out corruption as its allies continue to give the country everything it asks for.

Shuster followed Zelenskyy back to Ukraine after he and his closest advisers visited the U.S. in September.

He commented that Ukraine’s president “can feel during his travels that global interest in the war has slackened. So has the level of international support.”

The reporter also spoke to an adviser who said that in spite of some internal housecleaning in the Zelenskyy Cabinet, theft is rampant.

“Amid all the pressure to root out corruption, I assumed, perhaps naively, that officials in Ukraine would think twice before taking a bribe or pocketing state funds,” Shuster wrote.

“But when I made this point to a top presidential adviser in early October, he asked me to turn off my audio recorder so he could speak more freely. ‘Simon, you’re mistaken,’ he says. ‘People are stealing like there’s no tomorrow.'”

While Zelenskyy fired numerous Defense Ministry officials this year to change a perception that corruption was widespread, the adviser told Shuster that people behind the corruption did not “feel any fear” about facing consequences for misusing government funds as Ukraine relies on international aid.

Shutter added, “By the time [Zelenskyy] acted ahead of his U.S. visit, ‘it was too late,’ says another senior presidential adviser. Ukraine’s Western allies were already aware of the scandal by then.

“Soldiers at the front had begun making off-color jokes about ‘Reznikov’s eggs,’ a new metaphor for corruption. ‘The reputational damage was done,’ says the adviser.”

Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov resigned in September in what Reutersreferred to as a “wartime shakeup” of Zelenskyy’s Cabinet.

Reports that people in the Ukrainian government are “stealing” come as President Joe Biden and U.S. lawmakers face pushback from taxpayers about their blank check policy toward funding a war with no end in sight.

According to CNN, Congress had approved $113 billion for Ukraine as of Sept. 21.

Lawmakers have not tracked the funds once they have been disbursed, which has sparked calls for transparency regarding exactly what U.S. taxpayers are going further into debt for.

The United States was $33.7 trillion in debt as of Tuesday, according to the U.S. Debt Clock.

WAR IN UKRAINE
Ukraine captured two injured North Korean soldiers, Zelenskyy says
It is the first time Ukraine has said it has detained North Korean troops since Pyongyang deployed an estimated 11,000 soldiers to support Russia late last year.

Ukraine has captured two injured North Korean soldiers from the battlefield in Russia’s Kursk region and transferred them to Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday.

“Two soldiers, though wounded, survived and were transported to Kyiv, where they are now communicating with the Security Service of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy wrote on X, alongside a series of photos of the prisoners

It is the first time Ukraine has said it has detained North Korean troops since Pyongyang deployed an estimated 11,000 soldiers to support Russia late last year, according to the U.S. and its allies. Neither Russia nor North Korea have publicly acknowledged the troop deployment.

“As with all prisoners of war, these two North Korean soldiers are receiving the necessary medical assistance,” Zelenskyy said, noting that their capture “was not an easy task,” adding the claim that Russian and North Korean soldiers "usually execute their wounded to erase any evidence of North Korea’s involvement in the war against Ukraine

One of the images posted by Zelenskyy showed a man with both arms bandaged and a striped sweater pulled over his shoulders. Another man is pictured with swollen lips and a bandage wrapped around his head.

Two other images showed the cover and inside pages of a Russian document

Ukraine's military warned in December that Russia was trying to "conceal the presence of North Korean military personnel by issuing them false documents

It said military cards for North Koreans killed in the conflicts were "missing all the stamps and photographs," and that the signatures on the documents are in Korean, which “indicates the real origin of these soldiers.”

In October, South Korean intelligence services said that North Korean special forces soldiers received Russian military uniforms and Russian-made weapons, as well as fake identification documents to make it look as if they come from Russia’s Far East, where people can resemble North Koreans.

Zelensky said that he had instructed Ukraine's security service to allow journalists access to the prisoners

The world needs to know the truth about what is happening,” he said.

Zelenskyy said last week that 4,000 North Korean soldiers have died or been wounded in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have launched a cross-border incursion since August.

The same month, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said some North Korean soldiers had taken their own lives rather than surrender to Ukrainian forces.

These suicides, he said, were “likely out of fear of reprisal against their families in North Korea in the event that they’re captured

The article I posted said 10% of the orcs' refining capacity had been taken offline due to drone attacks.

That Ukraine is basically rigging cessnas to be predator drones is pretty epic.
Ukraine has made some great leaps in drone tech from this war. They are also developing a lot of other home grown long range weapons like cruise missiles so they can continue to bring the fight to Russia and make this war cost them.
