Disaster for Atlético today in Europa. They went 1 down in the 5th minute, then a Rubin player gets a red card, and then they don´t score for 50 mins. Right at the end Rubin scores again. First home loss of the season and it couldn't have happened in a more terrible way.

Given how great their season is going being knocked out of Europa doesn't seem like that big of a deal really.

Yeah, check out the stands. They're half empty.

Yeah I know, but it still sucks to see them go down like that in a very winnable game at home. I think that they are nearly a lock to make a CL berth this season, but I still don't like it. Sergio Asenjo was in goal today, but he was only 1 of 2 or 3 non-starters playing. Falcao put one of the post and went the full 90.

They knocked the cinderella story Crewe team out of Europa last month so #### them.

The Eastern European teams are not only getting more talented, but they are getting better at staying match fit in what is now their off-season. I'm not convinced that playing these games in their off-season is a disadvantage anymore.

I wish what ever pixie dust was spread over the Pacific NW would find its way to the North EastFrom the Portland Tribune

Want some? Get in line early, or get online quickly. They will all sell, and each of the Timbers’ 17 home Major League Soccer games will be sold out. It has happened in the first two years of the MLS Timbers, and it’ll happen again, continuing what could only be described as one of the most unique phenomenons in Portland sports history. The Timbers haven’t made the MLS playoffs, yet, and the fans still go to games, with the season-ticket waiting list at about 6,000 and renewal rate at 97 percent.Much like Blazermania in the 1970s, just what might happen, should the Timbers win more games and make the playoffs?“When it all comes together on the field, it’ll be absolutely magical in this city,” says Mike Golub, Timbers chief operating officer. For now, it’s simply the place to be, Jeld-Wen Field on Timbers game day.

Here's what he posted. I think he's retiring, or more specifically stepping away, to figure out and prioritize his life.

The Next Chapter…Things are never what they seem… My whole life I have felt different, different from my peers, even different from my family. In today’s society being different makes you brave. To overcome your fears you must be strong and have faith in your purpose. For the past 25 year I have been afraid, afraid to show whom I really was because of fear. Fear that judgment and rejection would hold me back from my dreams and aspirations. Fear that my loved ones would be farthest from me if they knew my secret. Fear that my secret would get in the way of my dreams. Dreams of going to a World Cup, dreams of The Olympics, dreams of making my family proud. What would life be without these dreams? Could I live a life without them?Life is only complete when your loved ones know you. When they know your true feelings, when they know who and how you love. Life is simple when your secret is gone. Gone is the pain that lurks in the stomach at work, the pain from avoiding questions, and at last the pain from hiding such a deep secret. Secrets can cause so much internal damage. People love to preach about honesty, how honesty is so plain and simple. Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years you are gay. Try convincing yourself that your creator has the most wonderful purpose for you even though you were taught differently. I always thought I could hide this secret. Football was my escape, my purpose, my identity. Football hid my secret, gave me more joy than I could have ever imagined… I will always be thankful for my career. I will remember Beijing, The MLS Cup, and most of all my teammates. I will never forget the friends I have made a long the way and the friends that supported me once they knew my secret. Now is my time to step away. It’s time to discover myself away from football. It’s 1 A.M. in London as I write this and I could not be happier with my decision. Life is so full of amazing things. I realized I could only truly enjoy my life once I was honest. Honesty is a ##### but makes life so simple and clear. My secret is gone, I am a free man, I can move on and live my life as my creator intended. body text here ...
That last bit "body text here" gives you an idea of how fast he must have posted this. Or that he's not the best at managing his web page.-QG

yeah, I read that from your original link. I was not able to understand if he was retiring because he came out or they just happened simultaneously.Hope it works out for him. He was never going to be a star but I always thought he was going to be a decent pro in MLS/smaller Euro leagues. Maybe he realized that he was never going to make it to the point where it was enough to want to hide who he was

Interesting stuff from Robbie Rogers. Wasn't too long since he was a viable up-and-coming option for the Nats. He's been much quieter on Twitter in the past few months, it seems....wonder if this had anything to do with it. I hope he's found peace with everything.

I know we keep the political crap out of this thread, but it's really impressive and encouraging to see how much support Robbie Rogers is getting on Twitter right now. Every soccer writer, seemingly every current or former US player tweeting support for him and praising him. Pretty awesome stuff.

A glimmer of hope in a year that's been full so far of news about match fixing, racism and cheating.

:goodposting: The response is, most definitely.Too bad that he comes out AFTER "retiring". I don't blame him at all, and am amazed at his bravery here... but we're still too far away from a time when we (society and his peers) can accept a professional athlete as being gay the way we can accept a professional athlete who is another religion or race. oh... right.

Oldham keeper comes forward in the last minute and scores on a hand ball - but Matt Smith makes it look like he scored it - so they come away with a tie and get a replay

I thought it was an easy hand ball until the back side replay. I think it actually did go off of Matt Smith's head. His reaction was instant as well.

looks like you might be right - that really slow motion one looks like it missed the arm and hit Smiths head.

Nutso game. And if not for Howard at the end there, that would have been the game winner instead of tie-er. A couple of great saves and punches.

Chuck Blazer will not seek re-election to Fifa. His seat is expected to be contested by Sunil and Justino Compean (Mexican Federation President).

I imagine Swansea will be fined for sitting every single one of their starters sans Vorm. It makes a game unwatchable.
Fined by whom? Are you thinking match mixing?
The FA. I believe they fined Blackpool for the same thing last year. You are supposed to field your best eleven. They allow for resting players, but when a club pulls a "B" club rest day they generally get fined.
I had a vague memory of this so I looked it up. It was Blackpool for a game back in November 2010 for resting 10 players. Holloway threatened to quit after the fine and then went on to appeal but I could not find the result of the appeal. I personally don't think the FA has any right to tell a team who to start unless they believe match fixing is going on. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/mobile/football/teams/b/blackpool/9382766.stm

They paid the fine. I don't care much for FAs policies generally, but this rule makes sense. Playing reserve teams in EPL games isn't acceptable. Benching your entire team is a lot different than rotating players.I imagine the managers know they are going to get fined going into the game.

The FA rules state you have to name a 25 man roster for a season. A manager should be allowed to choose how he manages his players so that he ends up with the best results for his team at the end of the year.In Swansea's case, the following priorities are likely in place for yearly goals1) Avoid relegation2) Challenge for a Europa League spot3) Perform well in Cup competitionsWith Swansea in no real danger of relegation, the League Cup final becomes their biggest game of the year since they can get into the Europa League via a win.I think it would be absolutely outrageous, (unless match fixing was suspected) for the FA to have any say in how Swansea tries to meet its yearly goals.Knowing that the League Cup final is one week away and that they were in no danger of relegation, on the road, I have no problems with the decision of the manager to rest his best players in prep for the final next week.

Chicago holds his rights. It'd be cool if he'd have a change of heart on the retirement.

I think the FA gives quite a bit of leeway in meeting the obligation of fielding a competitive side. Benching 9-10 starters is just asking to get fined.Given the point system the EPL utilizes you can't have teams choosing which games they are going to throw and which they are going to field a competitive team

He started 4 players who started the week before against QPR. Swansea has started different lineups almost every game this season. Trying to figure out who their manager thinks their best 11 is not something any outsider should have any say in.It would be one thing if he started a team with close to zero EPL appearances this year, but he didn't. Vorm, Tiendelli, Davies, DeGuzman, and Hernandez are all regular members of the squad and all started today. The subs of Rangel, Routledge and Dyer are all regular squad members.
