Brek Shea on for his EPL debut
How did he look? He got on very early, was it an injury replacement in the first half?
Nothing spectacular. But he didn't look out of his depth. He made a few decent plays. He won the penalty. But he admitted he got lucky with that.
Most importantly for Stoke, did he manage to bash a woman over the head and drag her back to the cave as a trophy?
Break this down for me like I'm shuke.

US beat CR 1-0 today to top their group in U20 qualifying. The quarter final matchup (which determines if they qualify for the U20 WC) is against Canada next Tuesday. The US played a much better game today than the horror show against Haiti.
It appears to be a pretty pedestrian side to be honest. Hopefully the first game was just a scary blip. It is by far the most Hispanic influenced side the US has ever put out at any level.

The Latin influence has been coming for years. I bet in 20 years, about two thirds of the USMNT will be latino. We'll run out of Germans who can obtain a US passport.

it is also reflected in the coaching.Martin Vasquez is Klinsmann's number 2.Tab Ramos coaches the U20'sJavier Perez coaches the U18'sHugo Perez coaches the U14'sAnd many of the top level scouts are Hispanic which helps them reach into the Latino communities.

What was most heartening for me was seeing that Ramos made the necessary tactical adjustment by keeping Lopez and Trapp together in midfield.

I agree. I think Lopez has been very solid. Outside of Cuevas, he was the only one who showed up for the Haiti game although coming in as a second half sub he could not get a hold of the game.I mentioned when KC drafted Lopez that he was a good pick and seeing him play at this level now makes me think he is really going to fit in nicely with a very good KC side.Hopefully Cuevas will be healthy enough to play against Canada.

AFC Wimbledon wins 1-0 at Dagenham. Still in the drop zone but it's an escape from the ignominy of being 92nd out of 92.

Oof. That may kill any realistic chance Everton had at going for a CL qualifying spot. Up 1-0 on the road late, they lost 2-1 with goals by Norwich in the 84th and 94th minute. That was a big road 3 points Everton let slip.
Thanks for the spoiler.
Sorry. Are we suppose to use spoiler tags for stuff like this? I don't remember people doing that.
No. The game's been played. Anyone who wants to watch a later broadcast needs to stay away from the thread.

it is an incredible season statistically.Bayern's GD is at +55.The next best in the entire league is way down at +24
As a Gooner this just reminds me how outrageous it was for Wenger to throw away that home FA Cup game a week ago against Blackburn, ostensibly to rest players for the Bayern CL tie midweek. They were never going to beat Bayern, so they should have fielded their best and gone for the only silverware they can realistically get this year. :wall:

Im not going to defend Stoke here as I've seen them play thuggishly too many times, particularly in years' past. That said... I watched that Ramsey tackle live on TV, and I watched it again here. I still see a big slow defender going in very hard and late, but I've never seen someone go in with bad intentions on that kind of swing-anna-miss challenge. So for me I still dont think there was malice in the tackle above and beyond trying to win the ball (oafishly). There are way more efficient and professional ways to hurt somebody for Shawcross there if had had the intent.

I agree that he didn't go in trying to do what he did, but he went in hard, late and recklessly, and that's bad enough. He was definitely trying to put Ramsey on his ###.And he's got a history of this sort of thing, with numerous examples against Arsenal specifically. Pulis, while he denies it, has his team turn up the thuggery against Arsenal.

Going to have to disagree with you here.Arsenal didn't really throw away the game. They started a strong lineup for what they had available, and subbed on Cazorla, Walcott and Wilshere. And, even if you disagree with this, I think you'd have to agree that a CL match is a much bigger match in the scheme of things than a round of 16 FA match. And while they were certainly going to be underdogs to BM, you'd have to set your team to have your best side available for the first leg at home, no in a two-leg tie, no? I think you have to not just roll over in a CL match (at home).

Tremendous late goal by Hazard but otherwise another terrible game for Chelsea under that fat f######### waiter.
Heck of a strike.
I'm at a loss re: Torres, vacillating between anger and pity for the guy. Any reasonably competent striker would have had 2 or 3 goals (if not more) in the first half alone yesterday with the chances he was given. Looking forward to seeing Ba up front against City on Sunday.
I hear you. Unfortunately, I think this ship has sailed. :(

Did Reo-Coker get to play with Vancouver or did he sign to late? Was this fun preseason tourney earlier than normal this year because of the early start to the MLS season?

Whoever is announcing the City/Chelsea game is without a doubt the worst soccer announcer I have ever heard.I would rather listen to the feed in Spanish where I can probably only pickup one out of every 7-10 words, than listen to this guy. Besides the fact he obviously has little to no soccer knowledge, his crescendo with every half chance or opportunity is the worst. :X

Well, get used to it - because Gus ain't going anywhere

Pretty sure EPL is going somewhere else. Good riddance, between this announcer, and "The Americannnnnnn" guy, really getting difficult to listen to this garbage.

He'll get better. I love him announcing basketball and football. I'll give him time. He did well with the RM/ManU match.

I'm not saying you throw the BM match, just that you start your best for both of them.

Yeah, I caught the second half. I think I may have been a little quick giving Gus props for the ManU v RM game last week. The guy can't help himself. He sucks.

He got lucky. The guy sucks. There's no way around it. They even commented on him on Goals on Sunday.

That guy was horrible. I had to mute it. The British guy sounded so measured and calm compared to that buffoon.

My Atleti are still perfect 13-0-0 at home this year in la liga. Still 4 points up on RM and 12 back from Barcelona. Ho hum. 13 more games to go.

There is always talk of them as sellers. Any chance they become spenders (and keepers of their own players) with a CL spot locked up?

It's not just CL, it's the wages. Competing with the wage scales of the big clubs takes more than a CL spot every now and then. I imagine they would need a serious run.

I hate Gus, can't stand his excitement at the wrong times. Milner down the side AND HE PUTS A CROSS INTO THE BOX and the ball just misses it's taget*.

*the ball landed on the other side of the 18 away from anyone.

I'm OK with them trying new things in order to connect to casual watchers a bit more. I'm sure it will take him some time to adapt.

The casual viewer isn't waking up at 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning to watch a Week 27 BPL matchup, no matter who the teams might be.

Right. I equate it to a baseball announcer making a big call like "AND IT'S A LONG FLY BALL, DEEEEEPPPPPP TO LEFT FIELD. THIS. THING. IS.....caught by the left fielder just shy of the warning track"

Some sports it's okay to announce in an even demeanor and let the action dictate the call. In soccer, you are only going to see 2-3 goals in most games. No reason to try to force the call. Let it happen.

In other sports, there is definite momentum change with a big shot, or a big hit. College basketball, or hockey. Even Emerick in Hockey can get a bit elevated in his calls of the game, but I can live with that because he's a strong hockey announcer and is extremely knowledgeable. i.e. please don't go on and on and on about what a fantastic young French player that Eden Hazard is because he used to play in France....only to have a moment or two of awkward silence when someone clued Johnson in that Hazard is Belgian.

Let soccer announcers do soccer games.

Correct. That's why he's practicing before they begin watching. He'll be announcing the FA Cup final on big boy Fox. I hope he's ready.

I like some excitment in my soccer calls. Spanish vs. English style I'll take Spanish. I think Ray Hudson and his buddy do the best job in English. Gus is very green, but he is a pro. I'm hoping he starts to get it.
