A proposed United States hosted Copa America is closer to becoming a reality.

To mark CONMEBOL’s 100th anniversary in 2016, the South American soccer confederation is working with CONCACAF to bring the internationally known tournament to the U.S. In an interview with NASN, CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb gave an update on the status of the proposed tournament, which is rumored to include the ten CONMEBOL nations and six more sides from CONCACAF.

“We are in discussion with CONMEBOL for a number of weeks now, and we are looking at CONMEBOL’s centennial anniversary, Copa America, which will be in 2016,” Webb said. “We’re engaging with them to see what’s best fit for their confederation and for our confederation.”

Though on paper it looks like a terrific idea, Webb admitted that there are still issues being worked through. One of the biggest issues is that the tournament isn’t currently on the FIFA calender, meaning that many of the stars eligible to play in the tournament may not be released by their clubs.

In addition, the tournament would come one summer after the regularly scheduled Copa America in 2015, and just two years after the World Cup in Brazil.

“It would be great if it was just a matter of naming ten teams or 6 teams and playing a game, but there’s various commercial agreements and various things to work through,” Webb said. “So we’re trying to work through that, but from CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, this is something that we both want to see happen.”

Despite the issues, Webb sounded confident that the two confederations were close to an agreement. If the tournament does occur, give the USMNT the opportunity to play the South American nations in competitive matches at home.

“We’re just trying to wait until we get through various agreements with various people working on (the proposed tournament) on behalf of CONCACAF and CONMEBOL,” Webb said. We’re hoping that perhaps in a few weeks we’ll be able to announce a formalized agreement with both CONCACAF and CONMEBOL.”
So it looks like it is just a matter of figuring out how much money Fifa wants to put it on the calendar and how that bribe money will be divided between concacaf and conmebol.

This needs to happen. We need this to have something in this hemisphere that comes closer to rivaling the Euros, and the two American confederations just don't have the firepower to do that on their own.

10 + 6 using Hex teams as a qualifiers from CONCACAF just makes too much sense. World Cup, Gold Cup, Americas Cup, WC qualifying in a four year rotation. With Gold Cup winner and best CONCACAF team in Americas Cup playing for the Confed Cup spot.

Good to see my boy Joe Benny starting. I think he is having a great tournament. I'd guess he has 4 hockey assists that have gone under appriciated including the one the great outlut in traffic that led to the Shea goal. A little surprsied to see Torres get the start.

ETA: Worth noting that Corona is part Salvadorian and was eligible to play for them (and Mexico).

Hope the storms slow or break up. Big line of them heading our way and the current forecast is for DC/Balt to get run over by pretty heavy weather. Not until 5:30-6ish though, so maybe they get it in.

The wings are penetrating repeatedly and getting crosses in. It's only a matter of time.

The US looks vulnerable on the counter though.

Spurs are trying to assemble the entire Belgian national team, apparently. Since Benteke fell through their next target must be Lukaku.

:smackshead:

Probably the right call.
It was. Zelaya was under control and had put the ball past Beasley and DMB just went straight into his path without moving towards the ball. I would be expecting that call if an El Salvador defender did that against an American attacker.

Random halftime blah blah blah...

It sounds like a freakin' World Cup final. Great atmosphere, at least on TV.

Wynalda is such a homer. And I think he must really have a strong distaste for El Salvador.

Ref having a good game so far IMO. Got the no-calls, yellow and PK right.

Rimando's one-two save sequence there reminded me of Keller vs Brazil. Even though I don't actually remember the details of Keller vs Brazil.

I've watched the Nats for 20 years now, and god willing I'll watch them for a lot longer than that in the future, but I'm certain I'll never see another US player that just plain runs into defenders as often as Beasley.

LOVED Donovan's enthusiasm on Corona's goal. He is into it.

The 15 minutes when the US got the two goals and were buzzing around El Salvador's goal like red-hooped hornets was pretty exciting. Too bad about that deflating counter/PK.

Now the midfield is turning into a turnover machine.......Klinsman will watch this tape and know that none of these guys will see a field in Brazil.
