Sad to see another knee surgery for Cherundolo. I think this is probably the end for him. At the least, I can't see him rehabbing and rounding into form in time for Brazil.

Looks like it's Evans and Parkhurst unless Klinsmann decides to finally give Lichaj (apparently playing very well for the Tricky Trees in the Championship) another chance.

EDIT: Guess we can't count out Cameron either.

I had almost an identical conversation with a friend on Saturday afternoon after the loss. We couldn't tell if it was a good sign that Rosicky is still capable of playing at that level despite his age/milage, or a bad sign that Arsenal have no one else to turn to. Maybe a little of both, but I'm leaning the latter.

It's most definitely a bad sign. I think he would be a great player as Arsenal's third option there with spot starts and subs. Not week 1 starter.

Arsenal are hot on the trail of AZ Alkmaar forward Aron Johannsson, SportsDirect News has learned. Johannsson, 22, has emerged as one of the best young players playing in Holland. His recent form at AZ earned him a call-up to the United States national team, with whom he made his international debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 14 August.

Johannsson has scored three goals in the first three games of the new Eredivisie season and Arsenal, who have a long-standing interest in the player, are now expected to make a transfer bid.

The north London club are in the market for an addtion to their forward line, wit Olivier Giroud currently the club's only out-and-out striker. England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also facing a lengthy lay-off after picking up a suspected ligament injury in the 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger may now look to Holland to secure the services of a player who would provide a timely offensive boost, whilst appeasing dissenting fans.

Sections of the Arsenal support have rounded on the club's senior management in criticism of their recent transfer dealings.

LOL at the thought of Johannsson "appeasing" the Gooners.

I like the guy. And I even think he'd fit in OK there playing off Giroud. But the guy has played all of about 7 games in a league above the Danish Superliga. I doubt he'd be treated as anymoree the savior than Sanogo was.

my post was talking about my ####ty fantasy team.

Cissokho will hopefully return to his Porto form more than what he's shown at Valencia. It's a loan with an option to buy for Liverpool. Win-win imo..if he does well they can get him relatively cheap. If not, he'll be used as cover for LB instead of moving Johnson over there.

I think it's the most implausible rumor I've heard. Even assuming the rules are changed so that his salary is taxed, I would at least expect Falcao to hang around for a season. He angrily denied Marca's report today.

I'm not convinced that losing the tax battle will even stop Monaco's owner from spending. Guy's worth $9 billion and isn't afraid to throw it around. He's currently playing a very high-stakes game of "Start hiding money" with his estranged wife.

This is not the type of man who sells his best player to Arsene Wenger.

Scottie Parker moved from Spurs to Fulham.

Fulham has a few interesting parts over there. Not sure how well they'll play out, but some decent talent.

Newcastle was a disaster today. I may have overrated them prior to the season started, because I don't think Remy is going to turn this team from the #### they put out there today into more than a bottom feeder like last year. I know City is good, but Newcastle coulda lost 7-8 to nill today. Shoulda been 5, as one City goal disallowed was a bad call. Dzeko coulda have 2 or 3 too.

It's certainly going to be a club, and I'd figure most people would say either Bayern or Barca; Real Madrid and Chelsea probably would get some mentions by some, and maybe Man City too. Funny enough, all have new managers.

That was my broader question - but I was curious how one of the top national sides matched up against a team like Barca, RM, Bayern, etc.

It's very much open to debate, but typically the best side in the world will be a club team, with some great national sides interspersed. The club teams have players all year every year and they gel in ways that the international teams simply can't. Not coincidentally, a lot of the top national teams that you could argue were the best in the world at a given point typically had/have a lot of players who were also playing together for club teams, an example arguably being Spain over the last four years with its heavy Barcelona influence, or the Dutch "total football" team which was centered around a core of players out of Ajax.

In the last 20 years the only international sides worth mentioning as the best would be Spain of the last 4-5 years and France circa 1998-2000. Even they, however, had holes and flaws.

My list above focused on clubs only after my initial comment that it would have to be a club team, but that Spanish side would have to be in the top 3.

Spain doesn't belong in the top 3. They're basically Barca without Messi. That's not enough to beat Bayern, Barca, RM, and others.

I agree with it, but that is crazy to think about a club team being better than a national team. USA sports mindset in me I think.

Good point. I agree. And they also essentially dumped Villa for Neymar, which figures to be a trade up.

 
Looks like Willian will snub Liverpool for Tottenham. Good news for MLS fans, as that means he will most likely be there next season.

Tottenham have agreed to sell Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in a £93m deal, according to reports in Italy.

Sky Italia are reporting that the transfer is now just a matter of time.

If you’re wondering why an Italian news outlet would be the first to report that, Bale’s replacement-in-waiting, Roma winger Erik Lamela, is said to be on the verge of completing his move to White Hart Lane. Roma director of football Walter Sabatini is reportedly in London to finalise the move.

Since Lamela’s arrival is probably dependent on Bale leaving, it’s not entirely unrealistic to think that Roma’s representatives might have been given the nod that the deal is on.

And with the signing of Anzhi playmaker Willian for around £30m also rumoured to be close, Spurs’ spending plans would indicate that they are expecting a windfall very soon.

Although I'm not sure if Willian is worth 30 million (like everyone else, I've seen him play maybe 3 times), Willian, Lamela, Coentrao and 30 million in change strikes me as a tidy haul for Bale. Of course, even Bale's salary will likely be dwarfed by three weekly salaries, but I think that Lamela is probably at least as much of an upgrade over Lennon as Willian might be a downgrade from Bale (factoring in the upgrade at striker).

Have to wonder what Roma is thinking though. I don't see how you replace Osvaldo and Lamela with Gervinho. I'd have sold De Rossi, who they at least have cover for.

 
Why does everyone think that 17 Serie A goals are so easy to replace? I get that Osvaldo is a head case. But he was easily Roma's best striker. It's likely just Destro, Borriello, and Gervinho now.

Just think strikers are dime a dozen at Roma. Lamela was much more dangerous a player, imho.

Would be surprised if Roma gave up both of those guys so easily. Lamela only 21 too. OSvaldo late 20's. I just think they can bring someone else to fill the Osvaldo void fairly easily. Lamela tougher to replace if he is sold. but they gave up on Borrini fairly young too, so who knows.
