Samir Nasri to Arsenal? I had heard rumors for a while, but I just read that it's official on Wikipedia.

However....that's not a credible source. Anyone heard anything real?

This would be a damn nice signing for Arsenal....Nasri is one of the future stars of French football.

 
Both Edmilson and Zambrotta are already gone from Barca.

It looks like Santos and Eto'o might be on the way out to.

Don't mind any of these except would be pissed to lose a talent like Dos Santos.

The U.S. team dropped defender Michael Orozco and midfielder Ricardo Clark from its roster for the Spain game, leaving it with 20 players.The Americans then meet Argentina on Sunday night at East Rutherford, N.J., their final match before opening World Cup qualifying against Barbados at Carson, Calif., on June 15.

I was interested to see what Orozco could do so that's a minor disappointment. Would anybody here give Freddy the start against Spain? I know he's not really ready for full blown senior international work, but I'd give him a baptism by fire against Spain.
 
Cannavaro in Trouble

VIENNA, June 2 (Reuters) - Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro was taken to hospital after suffering an ankle injury in Italy's first Euro 2008 training session in Austria on Monday.

The defender collided with Giorgio Chiellini and was carried off on a stretcher.

'We will have to see but it is not nothing. It will take at least 12 hours to assess the injury,' national team doctor Paolo Zeppilli told reporters.

'At times there is a lot of pain but then the situation doesn't seem so serious. The thing that we need to know is whether or not the bone has been injured.'

The world champions flew into their base south of Vienna earlier on Monday.

Italy face the Netherlands in their first Group C match in Berne on June 9 before playing Romania and France.

I read last week that it was all but official. Great move. In the long run he will be better than Hleb, who I read was close to signing with Barca.

I don't think they will let Dos Santos go. They have a great group of young players I think they want to stay together. Messi, Borjan, Dos Santos. That is a bright future for the Barca attack. Gudjohnsen is probably gone as well. That roster will look nothing like it did last year. Out:DecoEto'oGudjonsenZambrottaEdmilsonRhonaldinhoMaybe Henry? If Dos Santos goes, it better be on a loan deal. Or Barca better receive an amount of money in the deal.

MISL is shutting down

WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Major Indoor Soccer League has shut down after seven seasons, and is considering restructuring.

The league, which had been in operation since the 2001-02 season and had nine teams in the 2007-08 season, ceased operation last weekend. That came a few days after commissioner Steve Ryan resigned.

Former league chairman John Hantz, owner of the Detroit Ignition, said Monday that the league is considering restructuring that would allow longterm growth and expansion.

In addition to Detroit, the league had teams this season in Baltimore, Chicago, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Newark, N.J., Orlando, Fla., Stockton, Calif., and Monterrey, Mexico.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro is to remain with the squad throughout Euro 2008 despite being ruled out of the tournament.

The 34-year-old defender collided with Giorgio Chiellini in Italy's first training session in Austria and his departure was confirmed after having tests in hospital.

Cannavaro said today: 'I intend to stay with my team-mates to give them a captain's support. According to you (Italian journalists) they will have to put up with me for another two years.'

And the former FIFA World Player of the Year was quick to admonish Chiellini of blame for the injury. 'These things happen,' he said. 'He (Chiellini) should not think about it twice. Let him rest easy. It was not his fault.'

Cannavaro will be out for a 'few months' after tearing ankle ligaments. He expected to have an operation on Wednesday following the injury sustained on Monday.

'This was my last European Championship. We are footballers and these things happen,' the 34-year-old Cannavaro added.

'After two years working on this campaign it seems right for me to stay with my team mates.'

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni said no decision had been made on the captaincy. Cannavaro's place in the 23-strong squad has been filled by Alessandro Gamberini.

Alessandro Gamberini has been called up as a replacement and will arrive at their base near Vienna today. Capped 116 times, Cannavaro has been a key figure in Italy's defence and was voted FIFA's World Player of the Year in 2006.

However, he has become slower and more error-prone since moving to Real Madrid from Juventus following the World Cup triumph.

His place in the national side has never been in doubt but the emergence of centre back Andrea Barzagli, who has produced some assured displays for Italy in the last year, will slightly cushion the blow for Donadoni.

Defender Marco Materazzi is also in the squad while Chiellini and Christian Panucci can play at centre back rather than full back.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon may be the most likely candidate to take over as captain with midfielders Gennaro Gattuso and Massimo Ambrosini other options.

The world champions flew into Austria earlier on Monday.

To all US fans. I would read this relatively short article.

I was lucky enough to have watched the Game That Changed US Soccer when I was a senior in college. I think ESPN showed it on tape delay. I obviously had no idea of the significance of the game when watching but reading the article makes it pretty clear how much was riding on that one game, which by all rights, the US had little chance to win.

:thumbup: :shrug: Trinidad and Tobago: Maurice, Morris, Williams, Francis, Faustin, Latapy, Lewis, Allen(-60), Jones, Yorke(-76), Jamerson.

USA: Meola, Windischmann, Doyle, Trittschuh, Krumpe, Caligiuri, Bliss, Harkes, Ramos, Vermes, Murray.

I believe D Yorke went on to win the treble with United in 99.

The other bolded players I remember from the years since then. Aside from the 1950 England Game, probably the biggest match for the US ever. I think the only game that can rival those 2 would be a WC finals win.

My group keeps going back and forth on whether to go or not as we cannot get tickets from Valladolid. Some places to hit up would be appreciated. Hopefully Renfe won't be sold out for tomorrow.

The 1950 game was certainly a more impressive win, but it had zero implications on the game in the country. In fact the sport actually saw a smaller profile after the win over England than they did before. We could have lost that game 10-0 and it wouldn't have been any different.Contrast that with the 1989 win, which led to hosting the World Cup, which led to a finally solvent USSF (as US Soccer was called at the time), which introduced Philip Anschuntz(amongst others) to the sport, which in turn helped launch Major League Soccer, which in turn led to a solid youth and senior program, which led us to where we are today.

Its is frightening to think of where we would be today with out this win in 1989. We lose this game and we don't get the World Cup nor all the incredible fruit that tournament bore for us.

Does Sven going to Mexico impact how the US plays Mexico in the WCQ games? I agree with the above poster that Mexico plays the US with so much anger that it takes them out of the match. I'm a little worried he could coach the anger out the Mexican side and we may be in a touch of trouble.

I never really know what to expect from a US side against decent opposition. Sometimes it's solid and sometimes it's pure crap.

As for Italy losing Cannavaro for the Euro, I don't see it as a huge hit. They won the Cup without Nesta(best projected CB in '06) for most of the tournament. If there is one thing Italy is not short of it's commanding defenders. The Captain's band slipping to Buffon would be odd, but I am sure they will figure it out.

It is a fascinating signing. Is this Mexico's first pure European coach? Outside of Bora (who was a blend of many nationalities), has Mexico ever had a non latin coach?In terms of qualifying, I am not sure it makes much of a difference. We never win in Azteca no matter who the coach is. So in reality the only change would be the possible 3 points for the home game against Mexico. Even if the US dropped all 3 points at home, they would likely still gather enough points from the other sides to still be a top 3 team in the final round.

Ives and Goff are both reporting that a transfer for Altidore to Villareal (who will then loan him to Huelva) is all but a done deal (Goff seems more sure of it than Ives does).

Spanish newspaper Marca delivered a story today laying out a scenario that would have Villarreal buy Jozy Altidore, then loan him out to fellow La Liga squad Recreativo Huelva. The story doesn't so much report the scenario has done(Steve Goff is reporting that the deal is close), but as a presumable likelhood now that Villarreal has reportedly completed the sale of young defender Martin Caceres to Barcelona for a tidy profit of $16 million.

Is the scenario likely? It is possible, but not done yet. What does appear certain at this point is that Altidore will be sold this summer and Villarreal has the interest and the cash to make it happen. Red Bulls sources stated last week that parent company officials from Red Bull were still weighing whether to sell Altidore and for how much, but that his desire to leave and the club's desire to have a quick resolution to his status would make a deal likely to be completed before the July 1 opening of the European transfer window.

In other words, Altidore's last day as a Red Bulls player is coming soon.

Would Marca's scenario be a good one for Altidore? Based on the Caceres' successful path from Uruguay to FC Barcelona, it might not be a bad one. Altidore would struggle for playing time with Villarreal, but can step in with Recreativo Huelva and see significant playing time. Caceres was a free transfer from Uruguayan club Defensor to Villarreal, which promptly loaned him out to Recreativo Huelva. There, Caceres became a staple of Huelva's defense and caught the eye of Pep Guardiala, the new Barcelona manager. Now Caceres is a Barcelona player expected to have a key role on Guardiola's revamped squad.

That scenario must sound like a beautiful one for Altidore, who is clearly eager to move on to a new challenge.

So here are the big questions. 1) How much will effort will Altidore have in what could be his last matches for the Red Bulls? 2) What will Red Bull do with the transfer money? Will it invest it in the academy or in finding new players for this season and 2009? 3) How will the Red Bulls replace Altidore this season?

The answer to that first question remains unclear. In an ideal world, Altidore would handle his situation like Tim Howard did in 2003. Howard delivered some stunning performances in the final weeks before his transfer to Manchester United, never showing much in the way of being distracted. The more scary scenario would be to have Altidore finish out the string like Clint Mathis did in the fall of 2003, when he was virtually useless in the final weeks before his eventual departure to German club Hannover 96.

Ultimately, the Red Bulls know they have to sell Altidore, and Altidore isn't likely to find a better scenario than the one at Villarreal. While the Marca piece reads more like a "Here's what we think might happen" piece than an actual news story, the scenario could very well be what happens.

What does seem clear is that there might not be many more chances to see Altidore play in MLS, with his last match at Giants Stadium possibly being with U.S. national team against Argentina on Sunday (multiple sources have told SBI that Altidore will be called in for the Argentina match). The Red Bulls do play one more home game after Thursday night's match against Chivas USA, on June 21 against FC Dallas, but national team and Olympic team commitments could force him to miss that match.

Yeah, its been rumored for awhile, but it looks like its finally going to happen. Also, Ives is reporting the fee to be between $8-$10 million, so Goff may be high, but he's not far off. MLS had been requesting $10 million, so Villareal may have finally decided to pay up. Regardless, they're going to get a lot more than $6 million for him. He hasn't been playing for Red Bull lately either, with reasons like ingrown toenails and a bad knee being the explanation. They might have been holding him out to keep him healthy.
 
Sure seems (from the Spanish commentators) that Spain is playing like crap.

Some comments, "Mejor será que nos vayamos al descanso. Recapacitar y empezar de nuevo." - "It's best that we head to the halftime. Regroup and start again."

"El centro del campo no da una. Iniesta y Villa, posiblemente los futbolistas en mejor forma, no están en el verde. Se nota." - "The midefield isn't yielding anything. Iniesta and Villa, possibly the players in the best form are on the pitch. It's noteworthy."
