My thoughts exactly after Day 1. Czechs looked like the worst team in the group....that win could be big for them though.
 
Filled in 2-0 for Germany and 2-0 for Croatia on my pool form.

Round 2

Portugal vs Croatia 2-0

Germany vs Turkey 2-0

Italy vs Russia 2-1

Spain vs Netherlands 0-1

Semi finals

Portugal vs Germany 0-1

Italy vs Netherlands 1-0

Final

Germany vs Italy 2-1

I won the World Cup pool 2 years ago. Hopefully I'll win the Euro pool this time and call it a career lol.

Very interested in seeing some of the young guys for Austria. Last year, I was at the U-20 World Cup game where Austria knocked out the US in 120 minutes.

The captain of that Austrian side was Sebastian Proedl....he's starting today. IIRC he's signed with Werder Bremen for this upcoming season.

I'd also like to see Erwin Hoffer, but he's on the bench.

I disagree. Barça only recently fell under the sway of "spend big" like Real did for a while (and looks to regress to doing).Barça failed to do well this year because some key players got hurt (Messi, et. al.) , and some didn't play up to their supposed star power (Henry and Ronnie). Add in some backroom squables and the disappointment that the realization that they wouldn't win ANY hardware this season meant that the pace of their failure accelerated.

They've had trouble for some time dominating away from Camp Nou. This year was worse and saw their home form match their away form.

I for one can't say I'm displeased, although I would have preferred that my Atleti take the #3 spot from them.

Who is their manager? I read something about Rijkaard being replaced with a former player with very little experience, but it seemed they are perhaps still looking.

The new manager is Pep Guardiola. He is indeed a former (immensely popular) player who was managing the B team last season. He is very inexperienced - I don't think this was a very good hire, but I hope I'm wrong.In other Blaugrana news, it looks like Barcelona has signed Dani Alves:

He should be a good fit. I'm still livid about Dos Santos leaving for so little.

Swiss are done -- Frei is out with torn ligaments, still have to play Portugal. It's looking like it's going to be a disappointing tourny for them.

My real pick is Germany

Austria has looked shockingly good for the last 10 minutes here....Croatia has kinda sleepwalked so far, and if they don't pick it up soon, Austria could equalize.

 
bet 20 bucks apiece on croatia to win 1-0 or 2-0 at 11-2 and 15-2, respectively. need them to hold on here.

what does everyone think about the later game? thinking about going with a draw/germany double result bet, at 3-1. either that or just put everything i have on germany ml. any chance the poles pull an upset? i thought i just heard that theyve never beaten germany...

They've picked it up a bit. There's a reason Austria is the 100th (around there) ranked team in the world. You can tell they're trying, but the talent isn't really there.They could still equalize, but I don't see it happening at this point. However, if I were a Croatia fan, I'd be very nervous about this performance.
 
Although as soon as I post that, Austria pins Croatia in their own end for the next 5 minutes. They're getting better as time passes here.

 
Austria gives a lot of effort. Not that impressed with Croatia but they are probably playing down to the competition here.

In other news, Kenny Cooper was added to roster for Argentina tonight. Also no Boca. LD is back and hopefully we can see how he and Adu work together. I can only hope EJ doesn't sniff the field.

(CNN) -- Manchester City have sent representatives to Brazil in the hope of persuading Ronaldinho to sign for them.

City chairman Garry Cook told BBC Radio Five Live on Sunday that Ronaldinho's Spanish club Barcelona had given City permission to speak to the player about a move to Eastlands.

"We have people in Brazil," said Cook.

"We are nowhere near completing a deal It's a tenuous stage and I don't want to give too much away, but Barcelona gave us clearance to talk to him.

"Ronaldinho wants to show that he is one of the greatest footballers in the world. The Manchester City fans would love to see him kick off the new season with us and I am holding out hope on that happening."

City owner Shinawatra Thaksin is thought to be ready to provide £50 million ($98.47 million) for new manager Mark Hughes to sign players, with around $29.5 million set aside to bring in Ronaldinho, who could well become the English Premier League's highest paid player.

Shinawatra, who sent previous manager Sven-Goran Eriksson packing at the end of last season, despite a marked upturn in the team's fortunes, said last week: "Ronaldinho - you know, he is a great player. Whatever the club in your heart, you would want to see this player in England, wouldn't you?

"It is not a risk. Sponsors will contribute. It will not damage our wage structure."

New manager Hughes knows that he will be expected to produce instant results. Shinawatra said: "I am 59 next birthday, so I am not a man who can wait for many years to see my dreams come true."

Ronaldinho had a poor season in Spain but City's owner said:"Ronaldinho is 28. He has much still to offer, he is a star. You need a combination of new players, existing players, quality, young and old.

"I admit also you need a player who is more than just winning the match. You need a star who can play on the pitch, but who can achieve much more for the club. Ronaldinho is that player.

"I am hearing good things about his hunger. I have spoken to his brother (and agent). Ronaldinho wants the new challenge, the chance to play his best football again, to return to the days when he was really, really famous. The magic is still in his boots. Let us hope we can bring him."

City also expect to snap up another top Brazilian, striker Jo from CSKA Moscow, within the next seven days.

 
Adu played brilliantly vs. Spain...considering he's 19 friggin years old I don't think there's any question whether he'll have in impact by WC '10.

Gotta love the Adu haters in this thread refusing to recognize his skills...they sum it up with "flashes" this and "we'll see" that. The fact of the matter is that his move to Benefica appears to have benefitted him greatly...kid has all-world skill for a 19 yeard old...it's not like Spain is a second rate team.

Can't wait to see the Argentina match in an hour!!

US vs. Argentina in about twenty minutes on ESPN Classic. They must know it's going to be a great game to move it staright to their classic channel. LOL

Anyway, I hope Bradley plays an aggressive style and doesn't sit back hoping for a 0-0 game. I believe Donovan is playing tonight. That might help. It should be a wild crowd at Giants Stadium. I wanted to take my daughter, but she was out of town this weekend. Damn.

:confused: I agree about Adu. The kid is actually living up to the hype we were hearing when he was 14.It could be argued that he was our national team's best player in our last two friendlies. That's not bad for a 19 year-old kid.By 2010, he should be starting to reach his peak. Unless people were anticipating he would be better than Pele by age 19, I don't see how anyone can say he's been anything but successful.
 
Super Mario didnt look very good for the Germans today. Still it was a quality win against a hated rival.

Tomorrows match between Italy and Netherlands should be the best match of the opening round.

 
Wow. This could get ugly.

Assuming Adu is healthy, I don't see how Bradley isn't playing him. That makes no sense.

 
Donovan really does make a difference

And the US definitely gets zero benefit of the doubt on foul calls

Both Bradley and Donovan went down at the top of the box and both easily could have been fouls, but neither was called

Other countries get those calls routinely against us and so much offense is generated off of those free kicks

 
I thought the US came into the game a bit after the first 15 minutes or so, but Howard is still keeping them in it.

Beasley has impressed me. He seems to be making his decisions at the pace that the Argentines are. Bradley, on the other hand, consistently seems to misapprehend how much time and space he has.

 
This is a hard game to watch. I wish the US would have worn their Navy tops. Between the lack of HD and the similar-looking jerseys, it's difficult to follow.

That being said, Howard is keping us in this, although we had a few opportunituies. I wonder if Adu will start the second half.
