Is the US game on Saturday being shown on ESPN2? My listings show drag racing.

ESPN's schedule for the 1st leg games, April 7-8:

Tuesday, April 7, 2009ESPN2 Show Time (ET) UEFA Champions League - LIVE!Manchester United vs. FC Porto
Code:
Wednesday, April 8, 2009ESPN2 Show Time (ET) UEFA Champions League - LIVE!Liverpool vs. Chelsea
Is it too early to know which Champions League Quarter Final games ESPN2 will be showing?
Knowing ESPN's love of the EPL you can pretty much pencil in Manchester v Porto over Villarreal v Arsenal on the 7th. Given any chance to show Man U they will.On the 8th I would think they will show Liverpool v Chelsea over Barcelona v Bayern, again they love the EPL. I would be completely shocked if this isn't the route they go.
Other than not getting to see my team, what do I win?

Update on the Euro friendlies:

World Football Challenge

Steve Goff at the Post reported that he spoke with Peter Kenyon, and that Chelsea is planning on bringing their first team squad of 24-25 players and intends to play all of them over the course of their matches. This has the feel of the 'Champions World' series that ran for a couple of years back around 04-05. Not sure if the same group is running this or not.

ETA: Maybe not, looks like Champions World went chapter 11 in 2005.
Has anyone gone to these before? I am going to go to the Chelsea-Inter game in Pasadena. Saw they have tickets from $35-$100. Some $35 are labeled "Chelsea Supporters" and "Inter Supporters". Are these the sections the ones to be in for a good time?I haven't been to a game in ten years.
####...how old are you  ...I thought you were like mid-20s....Which calendar do you want? Arsenal or USMNT.....You tell me which one(s) and I'll give you the link....I'm not sure what format Outlook is since I use iCal, but let me know if its XML or iCal or HTML and I can post it here...

My listings say the game is on ESPN2 at 9 PM.
This is kind of confusing.www.ussoccer.com is listing the game as being shown live at 7:00pm on ESPN2.But I do see that espn.com is listing the game at 9:00pm.Many people are running into the problem Mjolnirs mentioned because something seems wrong with a lot of the guides (Direct TV, DISH, Charter etc) that are not listing the game at all.I am just going to record a 4 hour block from 8 to 12 tonight and hope for the best.

I would not be in the slightest suprised if ESPN has given themselves room for the b-ball games to run over. They'll pre-empt qualifying games to show meaningless baseball games, so I have no doubt they'll #### this up in any way possible considering its the elite-8 of march madness. From my experience, they'll show the game live on ESPN U or ESPN Classic and then cut in on ESPN2 when whatever else playing there that's so much more important than WQ Qualifying is done. Frigging baseball for #### sakes!I can't tell you how horrible I think ESPN is with US Soccer- I find it enfuriating watching the new ways they find to butcher the games every time, from announcing, to directing, to graphics- horrible. I truly wish they'd let FSC take the reigns- not perfect, but at least they care about the sport, whcih ESPN clearly does not.

wow, I have so many comments about this post I don't know where to start...1) ESPN is not involved in the NCAA games today. CBS is showing those games2) Without ESPN, there would be zero, zip, nil soccer on a main stream channel in the US. Disney pays damn good money for all the soccer they show, even MLS. If they did not care about the sport, they would treat it like it like hockey. Have some fun some time and compare the number of hours they show soccer vs showing hockey over an entire year, even a non world cup year and you will be pretty surprised.3) Yes many many soccer games have been delayed from previous events running over. What you probably do not know is that it is a mandated rule in almost all ESPN contracts that they are not allowed to stop the end of one event to show the start of a new event. I can't tell you how many absolutely meaningless MLS games have rolled over and caused delays in events that were following it. It is the nature of the beast with tight scheduling of games which they are forced to do with low rated shows.4) I do agree in general that ESPN could do better in the general presentations of the games, but as long as they show the games in HD and don't muck with them too badly, we get what the ratings deserve for the most part. Notice the better treatment the World Cup games get, and that is driven by the sponsorship dollars.

OK everything matches now.

US Soccer is listing the game at 7:00pm MT, which is 9:00pm Eastern which is exactly the time ESPN2 is showing this game. The event before the US game is a taped event so it should not over run.

Haha. 31. Went to Columbia-Venezula in DC a long time ago. Been meaning to go to a number of games since, but it as never worked out. I'm still upset I missed Argentina-Mexico in San Diego last year. I'll take both calenders. I have no idea what format anything is though. Just send me something and if it works it works, if not, no big deal.

I loathe ESPN for the most part, but I lean towards andy's side of the argument on this one.At the end of the day, it's all about money. ESPN does a decent job, IMO, of pimping soccer with their "vaunted hype machine", as Michael Hiestand put it. They pushed the World Cup pretty heavily, and they push, to a certain extent, MLS Primetime Thursday and the Champions League. But ESPN isn't going to pour a ton of money into something that generates such low ratings (as much as I hate to say it, it's true). One of the most egregious cost-cutting moves, which I think is kind of comical, actually, is how ESPN no longer sends Derek Rae and Tommy Smyth to Champions League sites like they did a few years ago. That way they can call both the Tuesday and Wednesday games without leaving Bristol, CT (or wherever they call the games from). It didn't used to be this way as recent as 2007, IIRC. And while I'd like to see the games on FSC as well, because they do take the game much more seriously, I'd imagine that it's a financial/exposure thing for MLS and the USMNT. I don't have any figures to back this up, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see how FSC could afford to pay the MLS or USMNT as much as ESPN does, and FSC definitely doesn't reach as many homes as ESPN does. Maybe it's the cynical business mind in me, but I can completely understand why things are as they are in terms of soccer coverage.

and yet Univision, which some ESPN snobs prefer has been doing this forever, even with huge games, like the World Cup and is still showing games in standard def like FSC is, which is now 3 years after ESPN started showing soccer in HD.

 I wouldn't know, we don't get Univision here. My point was simply that back in at least 06 and I think 07, they would send Rae/Smyth/Marcelo Balboa, etc. to the different game sites. The fact that they don't anymore, while it hasn't really affected the quality of the broadcast, signals a cost-cutting measure. It's not like we don't know that it's all about the bottom line, but that was just a sign...I think ESPN does just fine with their soccer coverage. Obviously, as a huge fan, I'd love to see more, but until the ratings really start increasing, this is what we'll get...

The only soccer ESPN shows in HD is MLS isn't it? Champions is in regular def. I don't remember how the Euro's were shown.

All WC games were in HDAll Euro games were in HDAll MLS games continue to be in HDSelect US games (I think the home games) are in HDI believe (but not sure) that both of the last two Champions League final have been in HDIgnoring these hundreds of games in HD, all ESPN has to do is show 1 and thats one more than FSC, Gol TV and Univision have ever shown combined.

Just came over from the Nova game...how did they score?

Who started?

WhyTF does Bradley have a mancrush on Ching? The guy sucks. :coffee:

Beasley is not looking good at all.

The entire team looks awful. Slow - no life tonight.

Bradley knows he can sub in some people, right?

EDIT: Thankfully, he's subbing in Altidore right now.

Well they played just miserable tonight, but somehow they came away with a point.

Torres played well after he came on.

Wow. Crazy ending there...we almost came back and beat them.

A gutsy last 15 minutes earned the US a point. Keeps us on top of the division after two games...

I saw only the last 30 minutes. During those 30 minutes, US loked very, very good. Apparently the first 60 was the polar opposite????

Yep, pretty much Bradley ball. Play like you expect to win. With Scrubs.I'm not sure another coach can turn the talent we have into a top 10 team, but Bradley just pisses me off. As soon as Altidore and Torres hit the ground the game changed. Will Jozy start next game, nope. 4-4-2 every time is getting old. We have to play an attacking style to advance. We have strength upfront. We are not an Italy that can can score one goal and lock it up. If we can't control El Salvador on the road what would happen in SAfrica against, lets say Argentina.Bradley Out!

Bradley pisses me off too, but this team is not even close to having top 10 talent. I don't think it matters what style we play against the top 10-15 ranked teams, the quality is just not there. But yes, against El Salvador, a more agressive strategy would have been ideal. I would love to see Altidore get more playing time.

I ain't hating here. I couldn't remember about the Euros, don't watch MLS, and am pretty sure even the latest National home games weren't in HD. Could be wrong. Either way I am an HD snob I guess. Wish it was all in HD. No reason to thrown FSC, Gol TV... under the bus. We have no idea how much they would show in HD if they could.

Everyone catch the Mourihno clip at halftime? The announcers just talked about him coaching MLS. I think he might have been insinuating taking the national job.

1) If ESPN wants to show so many freakin' EPL teams, why don't they just bid on a damn game a week or something.

2) ESPN showed one of the two most recent World Cups without sending the broadcasters overseas. Makes sense to do it for Champions League, too. Are you sure they had been sending them recently?

It may have not have been true, but he clearly stated that he wasn't necessarily talking about the national job. Lalas and the other guy were joking that they couldn't see him doing MLS because of all of the rules.

Well, I can't say 100% sure, but I seem to remember the 06 Champions League (I remember because Arsenal went on that huge run to the final) having the announcers at the sites. I could be wrong though :football:

I'm pretty sure he passed on the England job because he only wants to coach Portugal. So I think he was talking MLS and pretty sure like a lot of Euros, he's talking about "retiring" to the US. I would guess when he is no longer in huge demand he will end up coaching somewhere in the States but that may not be for 20 years.

Thoughts on the US game

1) I don't mind a 4-4-2 but a 4-4-2 should have two strikers. The way Bradley uses the 4-4-2 sucks. I prefer a more offensive 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield and 2 strikers. Bradley plays it with two holding midfielders, and a severly with drawn striker leaving Ching (whom ever) as the lone person up top.

2) While Gooch is a steady but unspectacular defender, the US really missed his presence in the offensive box. And not because of just what he can do, but did you notice how Boca did not get near one ball on a free kick or corner all night? When Gooch is there, he takes up so much attention that Boca always has a chance to cause some havoc.

3) The US did not deserve the point in my opinion but as a fan I will happily take it. Although this was the one away game I was hoping to grab 3 points from which would have afforded the US to have a mistep at home. Now the home games become even more important because getting points in Honduras, Mexico and Costa Rica is going to be tough. T&T still offers some hope for points away I think.

4) I am more and more starting to lose some confidence in Beasley. He looked terrible all night. He had a hard time taking anyone on one on one and his passing was poor. I realize he has been a soldier and will bring a lot of experience but I am anxious to see what Torres can do with 75 minute type of run.

5) I don't blame Guzan for either goal but I do wonder whether Howard might have saved the second one...

6) Two straight games now Sascha has not looked the part. He is not playing with the confidence he has shown in friendlies.

7) Dempsey continues to add to the growing list of players who leave MLS and do not improve. Watching Freddy not dress and Altidore sitting on the bench, I assume because neither is playing at club level just kills me.

I disagree with this. The US had the better overall game than ES, they just couldn't seem to finish their attacks. Granted they could have much better attacking, but they deserved the point.I think Howard stops the second goal.

howard would have stopped that 2nd shot. The first one was the defense's fault. Guzan was laid out to dry on that one.

The US really needs to get Adu and Altidore in top form and playing together. was adu hurt or did bradley just choose not to play him?

I don't...the US only played "better" in the first 13 minutes and after ES's second goal. Between the two times they couldn't string two passes together (mostly b/c of Beasley and Sasha). At this point, I think they need to stop the LB experiment and move Beasley back to LB...solves to birds with one stone.

Anybody in here play Football Manager? Just picked up the 2009 version. It's pretty much crack.
I bought it about a month ago after reading Z and Scoob talking about it. I like the game, but sometimes the level of detail is a little frustrating and it can take a lot of time. Another slightly annoying thing is in 2009 Arsenal is pretty off the charts. I think they have lost three games in all competitions in the season and a half I have played through. Its a little frustrating when you pretty much have to win every game in the EPL just to keep pace with Arsenal on points.
