Really wish I could go to that. Would love to hit that and then go to Affliction. Most any other weekend I would have been able to. Oh well. Inter-Chelsea should be fun. Never been to the Rose Bowl. Whats the review?

The Rose Bowl has good sightlines in pretty much every part of the stadium. I've seen many matches there from different vantage points and even from behind the goal, you can see the action well. And the area around the stadium is great for tailgating.

In all honesty, I would rather have Eto'o over Ibrahimovic. I never understood why both Barca and Eto'o were so ready to be done with one another.

In general, the problems with Eto'o and Barcelona are the following:1. His contract expires at the end of next season and he failed to sign the extension offered him signifying that he could leave for free. This is even greater of a concern given that he is set to miss 6 weeks this season with the African Cup of Nations.

2. Generally regarded as having attitude issues and has clashed with both managers and other players while at the Camp Nou.

3. Anyone who watched the last two semifinals of the Champions League is fully aware of Barca's main weakness. Eto'o completely disappeared in both legs of both years as he lacks the creativity to make chances when teams park the bus or to be a significant target in the air. Both are qualities that Ibramimovic has in spades, which is why Pep is after him harder than he was Villa.

4. Despite the goal in the CL final, Eto'o was terrible at the end of the year. Losing the pichini to Forlan was inexcusable. Part of my negative feelings leading up to the final was the terrible form he was in late last year.

5. Something that concerns me personally is that, despite a gaudy total of goals, many of his goals came against lower competition(outside of his 1 goal/1 shot in the final). He scored 6 of his 30 league goals in the ten matches against Barca's top 5 competitors( Real, Villareal, Sevilla, Valencia, and Atletico Madrid). This is the lowest among the strikers(Messi 8/23 and Henry 11/19) while he played in more of those matches. Anybody can put up 4 against Valladolid, but can he get it done when it counts?

I knew about the contract stuff, but not the other info. Thanks for the breakdown Desert Power. I thought Ibra had a similar reputation though in that he will murder lesser teams, but can't deliver the goods against elite competition, or is this not the case? I don't pay much attention to the Italian leagues.

Kendall, admittedly I do not pay much attention to them either and it is a criticism that I have heard from many fans of english soccer whose main exposure to Ibra in CL matches. Many Inter fans I have talked to have said that those performances are not indicative of what he would do in Barca on the big stage. Their reasoning for this is that Ibra has been mainly alone in the Inter attack in those matches and it has been easy to take him out of the game. This should then be more difficult to accomplish with the sheer amount of attacking talent up front for Barca. We won't know how it works out until it happens, but Ibra certainly should be the big creative striker to unlock the back lines when teams refuse to attack against Barca.

 
Anyone catch the GC semi tonight? Holden continues to impress me but I have to keep reigning it in and recognize the competition he's playing against, especially when I realize that Heath Pearce also looks pretty awesome out there as well. I will say that his ability to play on either wing could make him an extremely valuable asset come WC time.

And for all those clamoring for more Kenny Cooper (okay, I may have been one), he really has brought a big bad of nothing in each contest I've seen him in. Yes, he scored again but that goal wasn't exactly about the finish.

Looking forward to the Costa Rica-Mexico game later.

I was at the game last night. Some thoughts:1) If last night was any indication, Ronaldinho will have a huge season. The entire Milan offense was run through him and he personally had his hand in 5-6 tremendous opportunities. It was really a pleasure gettting to see him in person. At this rate, he will be back in the Brazil national team before years end imo . 2) Milan needs a lead striker desperately to finish off some of Dinho's passes. Gianmarco Zigoni started last night as the lead striker and he missed several golden opportunities. Pato didnt play but Im not sure he will fill that role. This team needs someone like Luis Fabiano and frankly Id be surprised if they dont pony up to get him2) Gatusso really is one mean SOB. So much for the match being a friendly.3) Club America played very well in spurts. They were excellent for the first 20 minutes and then took the gas off the pedal as Milan struck back. They were very dangerous in the second half and deserved to win the game. Theyve now taken down Inter and Milan in consecutive games.4) It bothered me how alone Gooch looked out there. First of all, he really did look out of place - not really a surprise that he hasnt practiced with the team since his arrival. But he did a poor job marking the Club America strikers and would defer to the other Milan defenders whenever backtracking for the ball. He always seemed to be second to the ball on the backline. Now, he was directly responsible for the first goal which must have been a terrible feeling. Moreover, it was discouraging that none of his Milan teammates came over to him after the goal to support him, encourage him, teach him. It was if they left him out there on an island. I felt bad for him as did most who were watching. I hope the cultural differences do not impact his opportunities with the team (coaches and players alike) and that everyone gives him a fair chance. To his credit, his late header almost resulted in the tying goal in extra time. And of course this is only game one so lets not be too rash to judge. But I could definitely see him riding the pine this year (a WC year no less).5) The Mexican fans sure do travel well. They were loud and celebratory for most of the game and jeered the Milan players whenever they had the chance. But it all seemed good spirited. The game wasnt sold out by any stretch (around 50K) but the environment was excellent around. Good times :thumbup:
 
Mexico brought about 2-3x the talent that the US brought to this tourney. Guardado, Vela, and Dos Santos are gonna be a terror for years to come for el Tri. Right now this is the US's best shot to get a point in Azteca, before these youngsters reach their peak.

Los Ticos played well, but not well enough to win. The better team won the match, although their fans should be shamed. Classless actions.

I have watched I believe every US game in the Gold Cup.

While I was hoping that a striker would step forward (Cooper was my biggest hope), nothing has really emerged their. Cooper played poorly in his start. He has two goals but has not been able to show too much in the short stints as a sub.

Three players have stood out for the US, Rogers, Holdem and Beckerman. Of the three, I think only Rogers has a chance to crack the World Cup squad and thats only if Bradley gives up on DMB.

Still nice to see a B- level US squad still play well enough to make the finals. I thought last night was by far their best game of the tournament. They played even to about the 35 minute of the first half and then dominated the rest of the game. Could have been 4-0 easy IMO

For most of the match, every time a CRC player neared the stands, the fans would throw things at them. Usually cups of soda it appeared, but there may have been other things. The stands were VERY close to the corners, so more than once the CRC player had take extra long to take the corner due to debris or getting hit with stuff from the stands. The ref had a few words with the MEX Captain, who basically said, "hey, it's not my problem."While the fans were really terrible in this regard, the announcers on Univision drew a lot of attention to their classless actions. They continually harped upon the fact that the fans were being totally disrespectful and disrupting the game. I got no sense whatsoever that the announcers were defending these MEX fans. They were however, VERY biased for the Mexican team.The CRC goal in the 90+ minute to tie was very nice. Ledesma (I think that's his name) made a great move to get position on a looping pass while being marked by 2 defenders. One got turned, the ball bounced once, and he fired a rocket into the net left-footed. Very nice finish, and one that I don't see the US player making very often or ever.The Mexican team is pretty good. They'll make SA2010 I'm fairly certain. They need work on their defense, holding midfield, and finishing though. Carlos Vela when healthy will be a big addition. Dos Santos was a monster at times in the attacking MF and can make 70+ yard runs beating numerous players. He's got the quicks and the ball handling skills to be a real playmaker for them. I see him as the Landon Donovan of that team, with way more upside in a few years. Right now, I'd still take LD though.

it is going to be interesting for him and Rogers. A lot comes down to whether Bradley is going to stick with DMB or not.Davies emergence as a possible starter will also affects Holden and Rogers since Dempsey will likely play one of their spots.

Football is on around the clock here in Asia. Caught the Man U / Seoul FC game in a pub a few nights back. Been watching a lot on tv as well (although if I see Cottbus v Nurnberg on one more time I might through a book of Mormon through the set).

 
As many of you know, I'm pretty new to the sport but I'm really enjoying it. In fact, I'm watching my second MLS game of the day and also caught a bit of the Liverpool friendly on FSC earlier. I get fairly irritated by everyone constantly impersonating the San Antonio Spurs.

Does everyone eventually just accept that as part of the game?

Well, you continue to #####, but it's not going away until yellow and reds are given freely for simulation. Maybe if they have that type of stuff reviewed by the leagues. I don't know. In the attacking third, free kicks are just too valuable. You'd be nuts not to try to milk the contact.There's a certain satisfaction in learning to hate the worst of the divers.

The diving is ridiculous (if thats what youre referring to) and I think most fans hate it but have begrudgingly come to accept it.

I don't think he's been nearly as bad in the last two years. That guy legitimately gets kicked an awful lot. I hate to say it because I love everything else about him and because he doesn't really act hurt, but nobody complains for calls like Rooney. At least it's entertaining to wonder if he's going to kill a ref one of these days.

It's become worse over time. 20-30 years ago it was essentially a South American thing. Sometimes you'd see the Italians do it as well. You almost never saw it in the German and British leagues. But as more South Americans made it over to Europe to play club ball, the Europeans have seen that it can be effective in drawing cards so it's been adopted by most players.

I think during the actual game, it is very hard to call and penalize. I think the only way to stop it (or at least minimize it some) is if Fifa actually reviewed game film and could issue fines and or yellow-cards after the fact. The yellow cards could play a huge role in tournaments.
 
I'm in for both fantasy leagues, but I have a lot of trouble keeping up with a fantasy league that lasts longer than ~3 months and isn't for money.

I'm "that guy" in the :e: baseball league every damn year. Sebowski can probably vouch that I have trouble keeping up with fantasy sports...
