####. Mother####er. DVRed the second half to watch Glee with my wife and the DVR threw up. Here's what I think I know from this thread.
- Somebody scored a goal to make it 2-2 in extra time
- Gooch is hurt bad
- We had 10 left on the field at the end. Why?
- Costa Rica played like a bunch of #####es in the second half
- Whoever scored the final goal had Davies name on a shirt underneath his regular shirt. Seriously?

Agreed. did they get their heart sucked out yes? Screwed though - no - they only blew it for themselves. Hope they show it on Univision - Uruguay vs Costa Rica could be pretty interesting. I'm sure that on paper Uruguay probably was hoping for Honduras (regardless of CR's recent form.)-QG

Capella, how do you feel about an offense running out the clock by calling running plays in american football? What about waiting until the play clock is nearly at 0 before snapping the ball? Are they also playing like pansies for having good clock management.

I'd feel worse for Costa Rica if they had controlled the game, but they really didn't. They had three good chances and converted on two of them. The US had maybe 10 good chances.It is weird how fast things change. I thought that Feilhaber had helped himself at the Confederation Cup more than any player except for Davies. But he really looked pretty anonymous tonight, while Torres really provided a spark. I couldn't tell whether Bornstein was at fault for Ruiz's second goal, but other than that he really played well. Kind of shockingly well.

It looked to me like the CR coach submitted his sub card and then wanted to change it. The 4th official wouldn't let him and that was when the chaos started. I don't think that was part of an intentional stall.
I'll be pulling for them against Uruguay, I want to see 4 squads from CONCACAF get in.

And I don't recall american football players writhing on the ground like they've been shot every 30 seconds. The other stuff (holding the ball in the corner, injury time substitutions), no one has a problem with.ETA - to CR's credit, they didn't flop stall too much tonight, like Mexico invariably does with a late lead.

I don't think that's why he got the red. I think it was arguing with the ref. I could be wrong though. Plus, the time wasting was going on long after that too.

My #1 complaint with soccer has been the players crying on the ground every time they get nudged. If NFL players did that, I would stop watching.

Disagree with this. I know Harkes was talking about what a great game he had but he is a serious liability defensively and is only good, not great on the offensive end. I put the 2nd goal on Boca and Benny though. Bornstein didn't play it well but Boca stepped up to fill in for where Benny should have been (he was too high) and got himself out of position leaving a hole that Ruiz exploited.

Torn patella tendon would be more than 4 months I would think.
Maybe not though... some quick googling says 8-12 weeks. MUCH better than an ACL tear, although Gooch will have a nasty scar from this.
He *may* be able to go full speed as early as March, which might put him in the squad for the WC which starts on June 11th.

Way better than any type of ACL damage also. If the patella is all that is damaged he should be good to go and 100% within 6mos. Good to hear if that is it.

Really thought the US played well despite the scoreline. CR got very few real opportunities but Ruiz made the most of his while the US flubbed a lot of our really good ones. We really should have won this going away but that's why great finishers get paid big bucks. Our control of the game was enhanced when CR went into a shell after their 2nd goal but we had the better of play even before that IMO.
Howard - didn't get many opportunities and I'm not sure anyone could save either of the two goals. They were just great individual plays by Ruiz. He did make a ridiculous save when Bornstein decided to drift aimlessly in the box leaving a man at the back post to take a shot from the 6. That was a hell of a save.
Bornstein - Harkes likes him. Bradley likes him. But he really is not a good full back. He gets out of position too often and does a really poor job of marking his man. He has speed and that helps him recover some but otherwise, I don't like to see him in there. He makes nice runs down the flank but he is not very good at crosses and doesn't pass well enough for my taste. I'd really like to see Spector get a try out at LB if Castillo isn't ready for Denmark. Nice goal though.
Bocanegra - Had a pretty decent game I thought. His distribution out of the back is pretty meh and he got himself out of position on the 2nd goal but otherwise he did an admirable job. Steady I suppose. He's no world beater but covering for Bornstein puts a lot of pressure on him.
Gooch - that injury looked bad. Hoping it is not serious because we would be lost without him. He got burned on the first goal because of a lack of quickness but the guy has magnets in his head as somehow every single ball in the air finds his head. He's big and strong but he positions himself so well on aerial balls that he basically eliminates many dangerous opportunities on crosses and corners.
Cherundolo - good game. He clearly lacks pace and that could be a liability against speedy wingrs but he positions himself well and is very, very good on the ball. He is also a great weapon offensively as he is able to cross with the best of them. I actually didn't think he had a great game crossing the ball but he did put a few really nice ones in there and he played the wing really well.
Fehlheiber - showed a good workrate in the first half as he moved really well off the ball and gave us some options in the midfield. However, his range was lacking and he got out of position defensively on occasion. The biggest thing to me though was that he lacked any sort of creativity on the ball and was unable to hold it much either.
Bradley - man of the match IMO. His first half may be the best half he has ever played for us. His workrate was unreal and I'm not sure he had a bad touch. Three or four times I cringed when he made a long pass but each one had pinpoint accuracy and started great opportunities. He was just really seeing the field well and distributing better than we ever do. He also has unreal range and seemed to be everywhere. His 2nd half wasn't as strong as it appeared he tired to a degree. But he still was doing a lot of heavy lifting in the middle and the scrappy goal was well deserved.
Donovan - not one of his better matches but I only say that because I expect better touch from him. He saw and created well, generally made good decisions, but his passes weren't crisp and his finishes were obviously lacking. I guess I blame it on the sloppy conditions.
Holden - I'm a big fan but this wasn't a good game. He lost his positioning over and over and didn't seem to show well at all leaving the right side basically non-existent for large portions of the game. Dolo did a much better job exploiting the space there. He works hard and it is nice to see a right winger coming deep for defensive support though.
Casey - he does some things well and seems to understand how to play with his back to the goal pretty well. But he is just not a threat otherwise and lacks the speed or technique to make runs on his own. There is no excuse for him missing the net on the opportunity that Jozy gave him.
Altidore - nice game. Certainly shows the flashes of brilliance. He's still more potential than reality but that potential is looking to be higher and higher. Great work rate tonight and he's just a handful for defenders. He showed great skill on the ball and uses his size well. Would like to see him finish better and be more a threat in the air but he's definitely coming along. Hopefully he can get more playing time with Hull because I don't see a way to keep him off the field for us going forward.
Torres - I thought he saw the field much better than Benny. He distributes well and has a real good feel for the field. Needs to position himself better defensively but he made several nice tackles.
Rogers - He was really hit or miss in the Gold Cup but I thought he did pretty well here. Some nice crosses and he held his positioning better than Holden. He doesn't have the holding ability of Holden but looks like he can be a good tactical sub.

Bob Ley was the voice of the US team years ago in the 90's. I hope his inclusion tonight is a sign that he will be a big part of the World Cup broadcast team, perhaps anchoring the studio before and after games.

3-4 months is not all that bad, especially thinking it could have been worse. That will bring him back in the Feb time frame. The bigger concern though is how the hell is he going to get back into game shape when he is likely never to see the field when he gets back to Milan. We can maybe hope that he gets loaned out so that he has some time to recover.

I know Altidore's finishing was not great last night but damn did I enjoy watching him play. I have no idea what got into to him but his work rate was significantly higher than normal. Combing that high work rate with that big young body of his was causing issues for the defense. Very few strikers work as hard as he did and it really showed.
If he can some how make this work rate his normal work rate and then clean up a bit on finishing(of which is his strong suit), he is going to be very solid for the US.

Good point. I was re-winding a few times he did this to show to my 5-year old how he shielded the ball. I'm expecting him to use it this weekend against the other U5's and TOTALLY DOMINATE!!!Actually I did show it to him a few times since I had been talking about it earlier this week. He tends to dominate a little at the games so I try to get him to use some of his other skills (step-overs, pullbacks, passing to teammates etc.) throughout the game instead of scoring.TLEF316 said:
