Would be nice to have the two best right backs in the world duking it out for your country.by the way... MLS on in the background while I'm getting some work done.

El floppo + bandwagon = Edson Buddle

Bayern beat Hannover on Saturday 7-0!

Three goals by Robben, two by Olic and two by Müller.

During the game the announcer said that because of the shutdown of air traffic the Hannover team had to take a 5 hour train on Friday to get to Munich. Because the train was already booked solid the players did not have seats and stood for 5 hours. That sucks.

Don't really agree with the penalty call in the 81st of the TFC game, but I'm not complaining...
that's one of those gray areas i'm not sure i really understand. it was stupid. it was unnecessary. but he clearly impeded him. he just missed the ball, however, and was clearly playing the ball not the man. as for your earlier post about seitz, the announcers made it sound like we are sinking or swimming with seitz. uber-talented and the union wants to give him time to develop or flop. so far, he's clearly flopping.
He impeded him in the box, I just have my doubts that it was a clear goal-scoring opportunity. I feel the same way when guys will get just to the edge of the 18 and flop to get the call. There are obvious times when a legitimate goal-scoring opportunity has been impeded and a penalty should be called. The problem is that the 18-yard box is so large and the punishment is the same for all fouls inside it.
if he's not taken down, i do think its better than 50:50 that he scores.
Maybe, but he took a particularly heavy touch as he braced for contact with Seitz. Seitz came out, and the player (I'm not even sure who it was at this point) almost put the ball all the way to the endline with his touch before there was any contact. It was the correct call, but I just have my doubts that he scores if Seitz doesn't make any contact, given the sorta tough angle and the poor touch.

Just so we're all clear- doesn't matter whether the guy is about to score or not; any foul giving up a direct free kick in the box is a PK. Or are you guys talking about something else?

 I'm sure Ramos isn't the only guy worthy of throwing into that discussion (best RB, not biggest #####) that I've forgotten. But probably a discussion for 2nd place after Maicon.

And getting to the other part of my OP-

Edson freaking Buddle.

Seriously.

The kid can't miss right now. 7 goals in 4 games. Looked like a real handful last night and scored 2 nice ones- big, strong and fairly pacey. Hard to keep that kind of goal-scoring ratio going, but if he can at least keep the aggressive, go-at-goal form he's been showing, seems a no-brainer that Bradley gives him a look for SA. And I give my official band-wagon-nobody-else-has-stepped-up stamp of approval (although Findley played against him last night, and looked pretty good himself- making nice progress).

Main problem I see (caveat: from the one game of his I watched... and in the background at that) is that he and Jozy play a fairly similar type of game- combo of slashing/holding forward, but not really one or the other. I like the idea of getting your best in-form players on the field, but IMO Jozy needs a real burner/slasher to best complement him... at least given who we've seen him paired with, Davies (the burner/slasher) has done the best and brought the best out of Jozy.

I with you. The "opportunity to score" should only figure into what card should be shown.

Ooof. The Gunners all but blow their chances to stay in the hunt for the league title.

Anyone watching AV-Portsmouth? Too much talent on the Pompey team to be going down.

Correct, but I'm arguing that I don't like it. Specifically, we're arguing about the penalty call in the Toronto FC vs. Philadelphia Union game on Thursday night. Toronto striker has a step on the Union defender, gets in the box at roughly right side of the arc. Philly keeper Chris Seitz comes out to challenge, and the striker takes a terrible touch, essentially booting it to the touchline, giving himself an awful angle on any potential shot. Seitz, as part of the challenge, clips him. Penalty is awarded, and De Rosario scores it to give TFC the 2-1 win.I'm not arguing that it shouldn't have been a penalty, I just think it's a bit of a flaw in the rules themselves that a penalty is awarded if the foul occurs anywhere in the box, regardless of whether it's a clear goal-scoring opportunity (I know that indirect kicks can be and are often awarded inside the box). The touch that the striker took was horrible. If he had taken a more deft touch and didn't leave himself with a 150-degree angle to finish it, I'd agree that it ruined the goal-scoring opportunity. But he took a terrible touch, almost knowing that he was going to flop on the slightest contact.

Did anyone see Steven Nzonzi's beauty from about 35 yards to beat Tim Howard yesterday in the Blackburn-Everton game?

Link

Lots of nice goals this weekend with this and the Maicon goal.

And hot damn....how about Yakubu's touch to set up Tim Cahill's goal in the 90th minute? Boy am I glad I taped this one.If you ever needed convincing that the first touch is the most important skill that great players possess...what a touch

To all the English soccer haters, serious question....how do you get to see your teams play?

I've been saying for years that I want to watch more Spanish soccer, specifically, but it's just so hard to even find a game on TV here. I don't get any Spanish language networks here (no Univision, Telemundo, Galavision) if they're on those channels, and I don't get Gol TV either. I get all my soccer from Fox Soccer Channel (which shows no La Liga games), ESPN (which has the occasional game), and MSG/CBC (no La Liga).

I'd be lying if I said I watch more than 5 La Liga games in a year, simply because I can never find them on TV here. From what I've seen, I'd say that it might be more exciting than England....but it's just so hard to get into it when I can never see it on television. With the EPL, on the other hand, I can watch a good 6 games a week if I want.

Also, I still need a team. I know Desert Power and Z Machine spent time in Spain and were able to find a team to follow that way....but I'm not sure what I should do. I love Thierry Henry, so my first thought has to be Barcelona...but I don't think I want to be a frontrunner right off the bat. Looking for more of an "upper-middle class" type of team.

Glad I didn't see that Arsenal game. How did Fabianski look? Were any of the goals his fault?Obviously they weren't mathematically out of it at the time, but the title hopes really were dashed by Spurs in midweek. It was a good run, but they really don't deserve to be mentioned with United and Chelsea. A nice third place finish (assuming they finish strong) and a Champions League appearance next year.

I wouldn't call myself a close follower of La Liga but I do enjoy the style a lot so I catch a game or two a week. None of the spanish language channels really show it so you pretty much need GolTV. As for teams, I'd recommend watching Villareal, Valencia, or Sevilla. I like watching Valencia the best though Villareal plays a solid game and has such a great player in Senna and also own Jozy's rights. I have a soft spot for Seville as I started following them when my sister was living there. It's been nice seeing them do so well the last decade or so (they were bloody awful for a spell). There are a few other 2nd tier teams (like Z's Atletico but if you aren't a fan already, oof, hard to root for) but these on the ones that appeal to me.

Those were the 3 that I had in mind off the bat, along with Atletico - they've been good lately, but I know they're not doing so hot this year...

If you like a team that will surprise you no matter the results, go with Atlético. They have boatloads of attacking talent, can beat any team anywhere, but also lose to any team anywhere. Also, their defense it pretty much like swiss cheese, so you never know when the opposition will score. Plus you get to hate on Real AND Barça!!Other teams that I like in la liga: Villarreal, Sevilla, and Getafe. The first two are "upper middle class" type teams. Both are solid all the way around with a few standout players. Getafe is a hard tackling and yeoman-like team with a few good players, but no one really special. But if you like a team that's less finesse and more fight to them, they're a good choice.I'd encourage you to watch a few games and get a feel for the teams. I guess the last team I'd look for is Mallorca. They've put together a great season this year and are sort of middle of the road in terms of talent. But they play well together and are decent passers and finishers. Not very many mental mistake from them either, but they're on the islands, and that's kind of cool. The downside to them is that they are privately held (unlike Real, Barça, Sevilla, etc.) who are owned cooperatively by the fans themselves (los socios).

Therein lies the problem. There's 1 game on ESPN2 per week, basically. I can't remember the last time I saw a game not involving either Real Madrid or Barca. It literally might be the 2006 Champions League semis between Arsenal and Villarreal...and that wasn't even a league match.Mallorca would be cool simply because it looks like an awesome place to visit.

Pompey-Villa was the game on FSC today. I just saw the result and then read Wigan scored all 3 of its goals in the last 11 minutes of the game.

Real Madrid & Barcelona both on TV today--ESPN2 & Gol TV. FSC & ESPN just have much better contracts with the EPL. So we get to see many more of the teams.

I know Henry might not be long for Barca, and he's not really making much of an impact at all lately, it seems. I do like Alexander Hleb too, but, well, he's on loan anyway. I don't know much about the other top teams in Spain other than a handful of the star players - Villa at Valencia, Senna at Villarreal, Luis Fabiano at Sevilla, etc.Not really a fan of Real Madrid, although I do like a handful of their players.

Yeah, but like I said above, I don't get Gol TV. I'm watching the Real Madrid game right now.

I don´t even get GolTV.

I watch my games on P2P. http://myp2p.eu has the best listings. It's pretty easy to get a good feed if you have a fast internet connection. It helps if you can understand the Spanish language announcers though IMO.

I used to watch a lot of games that way, and will still use it if necessary, but it got to the point where I'd spend literally half the game searching for a working feed, only to have the feed get cut off in the 70th and miss the end of the game.

What is it with these linesman butchering offside calls? That's at least 3 in this game where the player has been clearly onside and has been called off.

Also, does Guti ever pass the ####### ball? I'll hang up and listen.

Guti is a little ####. That's all you need to know. His job is to muck up the middle of the field and get in people's faces, including the ref's.

There's a clear class difference in this game. Valencia simply doesn't have the men to challenge in the midfield.

I love watching David Silva play. Might just become a Valencia fan after all.

Guti is just infuriating to watch. He never gives the ball up!

The are rumors that Silva is headed to Real in the offseason though. Valencia is in need of money.
Yeah, I know Valencia is the Spanish equivalent of Liverpool at the moment...dire need of cash - I think they took on a lot of debt when times were better and now can't pay it back.I realize that Valencia is a good team and they're playing against one of the best, but Silva looks like a man among boys with his teammates. He and Villa are just in a different class than most Valencia players, it seems.

Its true. Silva and Villa are by far the best players there. A while back Joaquin was nice quality but he's fallen offAlso Villa looked really frustrated in the second half here today. He needed better service and wasn't getting space to make his magic happen. Villa works best when working from the edges in, not at the point trying to get the long pass. He's too short to make that happen agianst two big defenders.

Also that casillas set of saves was pretty damn awesome. He really is like a cat in the net. He doesn't have the height of other elite goalies but he's got the best goaltending reflexes I've ever seen.

Jim Rome is an American sports commentator. Some love him and some hate him. He's hated the game for years and does his best to bash it whenever he gets a chance. His main fan base seems to be the older middle-aged crowd, the traditional anti-soccer crowd in the US....so I'd imagine that moments like these get them listening.

Gol TV and internet. Gol usually shows 2-3 Bundesliga matches a weekend.Whenever Knology calls and wants us to switch my wife asks the same question every time, "do you carry Gol TV?" When the answer is no she tells them we will not be leaving Comcast. They call about once a month.

Beautiful game my butt. Having watched the RM and 1/2 the Barca game I'm reminded why I dislike the Continental game. It's full of cynical and dirty players.

Yes. Did you see the foul on CRonaldo? Guy threw his elbow into his throat. Should have been a straight red. Sergio Ramos and Dani Alves are f'n lumberjacks. I don't think there was an outfield player on any of the four teams who didn't commit a blatant hard foul. Half way through the second half they announced that Espanyol had committed its 20th foul. The average number of fouls per game in MLS is 23. Link I'd expect the % of dumb fouls in MLS to be higher than in Europe. There's no way around it, the Spaniards are just dirty players.

And I give my official band-wagon-nobody-else-has-stepped-up stamp of approval (although Findley played against him last night, and looked pretty good himself- making nice progress).Main problem I see (caveat: from the one game of his I watched... and in the background at that) is that he and Jozy play a fairly similar type of game- combo of slashing/holding forward, but not really one or the other. I like the idea of getting your best in-form players on the field, but IMO Jozy needs a real burner/slasher to best complement him... at least given who we've seen him paired with, Davies (the burner/slasher) has done the best and brought the best out of Jozy.
I was semi kidding about Buddlemania earlier in this thread but damn, its hard not to look closely at this. The Galaxy are 4-0 and if I am not mistaken, Edson Buddle has scored all seven of their goals in the first 4 games.hmmmmm.........

I only saw the second half of the Real game, so I may have missed the foul you're talking about.20 fouls is exceptional, but I have a feeling against a team like Barça you have to go in with a game plan to be physical and on the ball. That makes me think that those fouls weren't "dumb" but very much part of their game plan.

In general, I'd say that there's fewer really bad tackles in Spanish football than in English football. I mean tackles that are meant to cause injury... two footed, spikes up, coming in late, aiming for the ankle type tackles.

Furthermore, I'm not sure what you mean by lumberjacks, and Álves is actually a pretty small player and definitely high on the crybaby spectrum.

How did Fabianski look? Were any of the goals his fault?
:lmao: Fabianski's decision making is awful. He reacts well and makes some decent saves at times, but he is terribly hesitant on crosses and is often times out of position. His performance yesterday was not as bad as the Porto disaster, but it wasn't very good either. Truth be told, the Arsenal back line didn't do him many favors yesterday either. It was a disappointing end to another injury riddled season for the Gunners.
