BIRMINGHAM, England -- American defender Eric Lichaj has signed a new three-year contract with English Premier League club Aston Villa.
The 21-year-old fullback has not played for the Villa first team despite being with the club for three years, but earned the contract with his performances in preseason exhibitions, including one against Valencia.
"Hopefully when I start playing here I can get into the USA team. That would be nice," Lichaj said.
An Illinois native who spent one season at the University of North Carolina, Lichaj has played for the U.S. under-17 team. His only professional action in England came on loan last season at fourth-tier Lincoln and then third-tier Leyton Orient.
American goalkeepers Brad Friedel and Brad Guzan are also at Villa, which is owned by Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner.

news and notes...
Diego seems set to leave Juve and return to Germany. Wolfsburg evidently will be landing him. That's pretty disappointing, as I have a rooting interest with Juventus, and I watch quite a bit of Serie A and he was probably my favorite player on that team. He was great to watch.
To make up for that loss, Juventus is trying to sign Dzeko and or Elia. Elia made a nice splash at the WC and he's still young, he could be very fun to watch. Dzeko's been linked with quite a few teams (Man City fairly prominently, duh). Not sure if either of these will happen, but I'd like to see Elia at the least.
Man City is poised to sign Batoletti and Milner. I read they were both due to be signed yesterday, but still have not seemed anything in ink. I think this is more a matter of when and not if, these are done deals.
Contrary to earlier reports, Schwarzer is not leaving. And it looks like Fulham may be making an effort to get Bellamy to join their club. I personally think that Bellamy has quite a bit to offer still. He's a fiery competitor and plays with a chip on his shoulder (perhaps little man syndrome). Either way, I think Man City is making a mistake by shipping out Bellamy and/or Ireland. They are keeping big names (salaries) and letting go key parts of the puzzle. I dunno.
Javier Hernandez has been having one helluva past few months. Nice WC showing, acclimating very well to Manchester United - not sure if anyone noticed, but when United played his old Mexican club, he played the first half for his old team, and then switched over to ManU at the half. If memory serves, he even scored against ManU.
Oh, Community Shield is back where it belongs too. suck it CM and Native. I didn't watch the game, but always nice to get a win.
Season is tomorrow....although I get to miss the entire opening day slate while traveling. Will watch Liverpool/Arsenal and United's thrashing of Newcastle.

Andy, I can understand your sentiment but many many good players spent their late teens early 20's on developmental squads and on lower tier loans like Lichaj has. Lichaj is 21 and by all accounts likely to start getting some first team action with Villa this season. With the managerial situation uncertain, that is a bit of a risk by him but from what I know, they think pretty highly of him. We'll have to see how this plays out by I had about the exact opposite reaction that you did to this news. My wording was poor. I was VERY happy that Villa signed him for the next three years. I am horrified at how little playing time he has received in the previous 3 years, which are crucial for American players, especially with our lack of depth.I am not a big fan of development squads when he could be playing in MLS (assuming he was good enough, which may be an incorrect assumption on my part). I just prefer the way M. Bradley, Howard and others went about it. I think this is one area where the MLS summer season hurts the league. If they played fall-spring season, MLS clubs would have a better chance of young American players on loan deals. It might not matter much to the European clubs, since it's probably easier for Villa to loan Lichaj out to an English team so they can observe his development closer. I agree that an MLS path is quite good for some players. But I do think everyone is a bit different and like in the NFL, Jeff Garcia can take a path playing in the CFL and turn into an all-pro late in his career and Tony Romo can hold a clipboard for 5 years or whatever.I'm not as turned off by the lack of playing time honestly. Lichaj is young and for the most part, games are just games. Training is where players improve the most and games are just used to see if they are incorporating that coaching or not. For this purpose reserve games and 4th division games are just as good as league games. In this case, when a club like Villa is investing in him and see him as a potential future starter, they are going to do their best to develop him and maximize their investment. Short term it may not be great for the Nats as he may not be game fit at the moment, but long term I think it will be very beneficial.
