The US has a lower level of risk in losing Lichaj than losing Andy Najar to Honduras. The kid barely speaks English, so his cultural bond to the US isn't as strong as we might like it to be.

The USSF needs to do everything in its power to keep these multi-nationality players in the US system.
Is Najar multi-national, or just looking for citizenship?Still kinda sad we can't just grow them here. :stinkeye@Rossi:
Najar will probably be eligible to play for the US if he so chooses. Citizenship isn't required for FIFA, but there are some regulations.
do you know what the rules are? I could have sworn to play for the US one had to be a citizen. I still remember the hoops US Soccer jumped through to get David Regis citizenship settled.I thought players like Mwanga and Najar could not yet play for the US...?

NEW YORK -- Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle of the Los Angeles Galaxy were not elected for the 20-man roster for the United States' exhibitions against Poland and Colombia next month.

Donovan and Buddle's Los Angeles Galaxy team is making a push for a spot in the Major League Soccer playoffs.

Aston Villa defender Eric Lichaj and Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones were among those selected and could make their national team debuts.

Thirteen of the players were on the American World Cup roster, including goalkeeper Tim Howard, captain Carlos Bocanegra and forward Clint Dempsey.

AC Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu, who has not even been selected to dress for his club this season, was included in Thursday's roster.

Jonathan Bornstein of Chivas USA and Robbie Findley of Real Salt Lake were also omitted.
In Eric's case, I don't think that means he'll be locked in for the USMNT, as it's an exhibition game, and not an official FIFA competition. I think he could still opt for Poland at a later date if he so chooses. That said, I think it's good to get him in action, and getting PT with the USMNT with the goal of having him in an official FIFA game.
Well, we play Poland in a few weeks.......
Is a friendly enough to cap tie a player to a country? I thought it had to be an official FIFA game?

Some news:Jozy will be starting today for Villareal Europa game (Direct TV is showing this game free as they do a ton of Europa and Champions Leagues games). In a classic, what could have been moment, he will be starting up top with Rossi.
I watched this whole game today. Jozy started and played 85 minutes. He did some good things, got himself in solid positions to score but his finishing, well, is deplorable. He is never going to get regular playing time if he doesn't improve his finishing.

yeah- I know. just kinda sad we could be looking at a future "US" team with Najar, Jones, etc as it's stars.edit- who am I kidding... I'd be happy to have these guys as stars if they play well.
To be fair, Jones is hardly the "future" of the USMNT. He's already 28 years old, and as a central midfielder, he's on AT LEAST the cusp of the downturn of his career. That doesn't mean he can't be the best player on the USMNT, of course...it just means that we're probably getting a handful of years and 1 World Cup out of him.Najar and Lichaj could be "the future", of course.

The problem is that it's awfully hard to separate the valid criticisms from the xenophobia. Manchester United has done fine under the Glazers, but they face protests too.
Your accusation of xenophobia is ludicrous. Where are the protests against the Emirati Sheikh Mansour, or the Russian Roman Abramovic? Surely if the problem was foreigners, those people would be even more disliked than a couple of American owners. The reason Chelsea and Man City fans aren't in revolt against their owners is because they're doing well financially. Man Utd and Liverpool aren't.
It's taken a few days, but I was finally able to find a site with financial information on all Premier League teams. Assuming this site is correct, Man Utd made more money than any other team last year. They have also been very successful since the Glazers took over.As for Liverpool, apparently Fulham and Arsenal have similar debt levels, with less turnover in Fulham's case. However, I seem to be missing news of their supporters burning flags in protest.

Arsenal debt is almost entirely due to the building of the Emirates Stadium. Fulham did major renovations to Craven Cottage but that was 5+ years ago. Al Fayed has been pouring money into the club since they were in Division Two. It's hard for supporters to be angry at ownership since his personal investment has taken a small club and made them Premiership perennials.

CONCACAF WC Qualifying looks like it may go through some dramatic changes.

yeah we were just discussing this yesterday or the day before (look back in the thread a bit for this article link).I find the whole thing very sad.

And just wait until Concacaf ends up screwing themselves when some fluke happens and 3 bad CONCACAf teams are sent to the World Cup and we end up losing a qualification spot because the CONCACAF teams get crushed.

I realize that flukes can happen in any format, but the format they have been using allows for teams to slip up a couple of times and still recover (see Mexico).

If Mexico does what they did last time, they will not have the time or number of games to recover.

This is a horrible decision. If the micro sized countries need more games, expand the early rounds instead of doing only home and home.

I understand a sinkhole is swallowing up the rivalry.
Absolutely terrible decision making on this one.I think that ABC/ESPN/Univision need to start bribing profit sharing the TV revenue with these Caribbean soccer federations.
not the furthest thing from the truth. I doubt anyone at Disney or Univision wants to envision a World Cup with out Mexico and/or the US.

Do the soccer federations get a cut of the TV revenue? If so, this is a huge opportunity for these media companies to lock in viewership.

Rough week for me on the playing field.

We played a man down on Thursday night, 7v8 (smaller field, 25 min halves), but we were up 1-0 until the other team scored in the 49th to tie it 1-1. Ugh.

Another tough loss on Saturday morning with my full-time club - Thursday night is just some random team I joined - 3-1 loss. I played about 75-80 minutes in the center midfield, despite nursing a slight injury from Thursday night. I had the assist on our only goal - our first goal of the season, sadly - and should've had a second assist but the guy blew a beautiful chance.

I'm actually in very good form right now....feels good to be playing so well. But still, I wish we were winning...

Chelsea-Arsenal very sloppy through 15 minutes.

Ramires looks like crap in the midfield. Zero organization skills.

And Perea screws it up on defense to let Sevilla go up 1-0 against my Atleti.

That guy is terrible. They need to get a decent center back or they're toast.

Essien playing outstanding yet again today. I have a serious man crush on him . I dont think theres another player in England who does as well tracking back to play defense and then lead the break in attack. In the absence of Lampard, he has played the role of creative midfielder and has been wonderful in distribution.

Just as I criticize Ramires, he does well to retain possession and then sends a great throughball to Cole whose cross is met by a Drgoba back-heel for the goal.

Still not thrilled about the Ramires signing but hes working hard.

What a pure class goal from Drogba....unbelievable finish...what poise

Arsenal had their chances early, but couldn't finish em. They looked pretty deflated out there after the Drogba goal, hopefully they come out with a bit more vigor in the second half.

Oh, and Ramires is a talented player, but what a freakin whiner....

Atlético is crap. Down 3-0 today.I had to shut it off. Couldn't watch the beating.C'mon Arsenal!
They've been on the front foot all half, but I just don't see them scoring at this rate. They've got a ton of possession this half, but no creativity in the final 3rd.I've tried to give Chamakh a chance, and he's certainly a serviceable striker, but he's just not an Adebayor-type who can make the plays for himself. As strange as this might sound, I think Arsenal sorely need Nicklas Bendtner. Like, really bad.As I was typing this, Chamakh tried to dipsy-doodle around in the box while Cech was caught out, and just gave the ball away.

I will say, though, that Arshavin and Nasri have impressed me today. I'm not the biggest Arshavin fan, but he's been growing on me.

Problem is that he and Nasri are the setup guys. SOMEONE needs to step up and score a big goal here, and I just don't think it's Chamakh. van Persie, overrated as he may be, or Bendtner could be that guy. But sadly, that doesn't matter today.

I know they would never have splurged for him, but Zlatan Ibramahvic was there for the taking and wouldve been a sterling addition for the Arsenal attack. Huge missed opportunity there IMO, especially at his discounted pricetag. With Nasri and Andrei flanking him and Van Persie playing alongside him, Arswnal would have been much more decisive in attack.

I mean, seriously.....Arsenal just had a free kick from the edge of the area....a cluster of players in the middle go up for the header, and guess who's hanging at the top of the area, beyond the penalty spot.....Adebayor and, to a lesser extent, Bendtner have that goal-poaching mindset where they'll go and put their bodies on the line to get the crucial goal. I haven't seen that from Chamakh yet. He certainly plays a lot smaller than you'd think a guy his size would....which isn't a good thing, when you don't have exceptional foot skills....which I also haven't seen from him...

yeah, Ibramavic has been highly impressive for Inter this year

Did you catch his 1v1 against the Parma goalie, where he had not one, not two,but three shots, all of which were saves? He also whiffed on at least one other sitter. He is perhaps the laziest/most overrated player this side of Adebayor.

Goal of the week so far was Pirlo's in that match.

####### ManU drawing @ Sunderland :football: didn't get off the bus for the first half, and by the time they woke up, decided a scoreless draw was good enough for them  SAF better wake this side the #### up fast.

Hmmm...think Chamakh and Arshavin are bad and Nasri and Wilshire are brilliant but I've only been half watching as I've been on the phone.
Arshavin's play always seems like a double-edged sword for me. No question, IMO, that he's the most creative player that Arsenal have in the final 3rd. Some games, he tries to do too much by himself and gets himself into trouble....but today, there's been really no creativity from ANYONE near the Chelsea goal, save for Nasri. Diaby has been quiet and was nicked in the first half, Wilshere has been solid but isn't a big offensive threat, and Song is....well, Song.Chamakh has been largely invisible.

Essien is MotM today IMO. Another brilliant pass to Anelka on the counter. Anelkas been awful today.

Chelsea offside for like the hundredth time today.

Chamakh climbs the ladder and heads hopelessly wide.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas checking in for Arsenal. Excited to see him here....interesting to see him get the call instead of Carlos Vela. Emmanuel-Thomas is more of an out-and-out striker though, from what I know about him, whereas Vela would just clutter up Arshavin and Nasri...

What a strike from Alex....Fabianski had no chance. Fabianski's had a great game, too.

Arsenal simply don't have the players to compete with Chelsea and United, and borderline City as well. Hate to say it, but it looks like a seventh year without a title.

Just please finish top 4...:crossesfingers:

Vela on for Arshavin....probably a good move here.

Sturridge coming on. Id like to see him take over for Anelka sooner or later. Similar players but Sturridges legs are fresher. Big upside there for CFC.

:goodposting: , self.Even though the final scoreline sucked, it was still an extremely exciting game - far better than any NFL game will be this week, probably. I saw some things that I liked a lot from Arsenal today, namely the possession in the midfield. Diaby, Wilshere, and Song really controlled play well - Arsenal just needed someone to step up and nick a goal, and no one could. Sagna, Squillaci, and Clichy were each shaky at times, but I thought Koscielny was a beast in the back. Fabianski was quite impressive as well.

If Arsenal plays that way against any team not named Chelsea, Manchester United, or Manchester City, they win it 95 times out of 100. As I was telling Derek just last night...they always get up for the big games.

It was well-won by Chelsea though. They got their moment of brilliance from Drogba and were able to sit back in the second half a bit. Despite the fact that Arsenal were on the front foot for most of it, Chelsea never looked shaky - Alex, Terry, and Essien were quietly AWESOME today. As a player, you always want that calming, quiet, solid/stoic defensive presence that those 3 provided today.

Hope to god Arsenal doesn't look past Birmingham in 2 weeks - can you say "trap game" - with a trip to Eastlands coming up on 10/24. They got caught up in that nonsense against West Brom a week ago and it's come to bite them in the ### real bad.

Bayern looking awful in league play this season so far. They just lost 2-0 to Dortmund. It was 0-0 at the half and then for some reason Van Gaal puts in Demicheles and he is promptly responsible for both goals, one with poor defending and then a handball outside the box that leads to a free kick goal. Just awful.

After 7 league matches Bayern has 8 points and have scored 5 goals, one of them being an own goal!

Gomez and Klose have zero goals. Ribery and Robben are sorely missed.

:lmao:
