random aside - when's the last time any of you guys saw a final whistle before a team was about to take a corner kick? Guess the ref had a teeny tiny sense of justice on that one.

Missed the only penalty kick

She looked like she did not want to be taking that penalty kick

 
I never watch soccer but that game was awesome. Big Carli Lloyd fan here. Also my gf thinks she could do what Hope Solo was doing during the PKs, until she made that save.

It's just like a batter who looks for a certain pitch. Most of us could take the earlier pitches. But when that one pitch comes can you knock it out of the park?

It's pretty common (and I talk about it a lot in here) for me to be awed by incredible players like Messi, etc. Even individual talents like Agudelo's goal earlier this MLS year, I can sit and just be stunned.I have never been stunned by a women's player until Marta. She's simply unbelievable.
 
Wow. What a great comeback. I was sick to my stomach when it was getting down towards the end of the ET, just thinking about how jobbed we got.

Such a smile on my face now.

First Julie was doing it in regulation, talking about 25 min left when there were 75 min played. But she was corrected and moved on.Then, they do this in the ET by both of them. I told my son "don't listen to them, there is 5 minutes plus extra time left".
 
Not to take anything away from the tail end of the tying goal, but my question is how does Brazil let the USA get thru midfield that easily, up a goal and a player with a minute to go?

And, yeah, that Brazil asst coach had to 6-6 or better. I backed it up and his entire head was taller than Brazil's keeper.

It happened in my game last week. When the ref blew the whistle in our match we were all shocked, to see it happen on the big stage was even more shocking.On the pk save by Solo that was called back; I saw the US player cross the line, but didn't think it was far enough to matter. Then when they called it off and it seemed it was against Solo I was floored. She moved along the line which is legal. I don't think that ref or her assistants will call any of the remaining matches.

Did you flop down like you were murdered with a couple minutes left in your game? :)Less surprised that it has happened in a "regular" game - I don't recall ever seeing it happen in an international competition though. -QG
 
I think we've rushed too quickly to judge the tragic injury that befell Erika (#13 on Brazil).

As you can see here in this youtube video she was the victim of a vicious tackle which caused her to hit the ground:

The play by play guy really had me thinking that my math was off. I was adding 90 + 30 and knew there would be extra time after 120. At less than 116 minutes he went full into the 'game over, that was their last chance' schtick. I guess as an American sports fan I never give up until the last whistle, hail mary passes-buzzer beaters, but that chap actually had pronounced Brazil the winners with minutes to go.

Not sure if anyone watched the postgame today, but Bob Ley said something to the effect of "this could be the biggest win in US soccer history, except for perhaps the 1-0 win over England in 1950." What are thoughts on this?

Obviously it'll depend on how you define "biggest win", but was today's game really on that level? US over England in 1950, as mentioned, was one of the biggest upsets ever. The win over Trinidad in 1989 put US soccer on the map, I'd think, and while I'm obviously too young to remember, really seems to be a defining moment and turning point for US soccer as a whole. The huge upset over Portugal in the 2002 Cup, followed by a trip to the quarters after beating Mexico. How about beating #1-in-the-world Spain in the 09 Confederations Cup after barely squeaking into the knockout round? And the win over Algeria that united the nation and got people talking about the men once again?

From the women's side, admittedly I don't follow the women's team all that closely, but was this win bigger than the 1999 final, which still lives on in sports folklore with Brandi Chastain taking her shirt off after winning the PK shootout?

I don't mean to diminish what happened today - the US played incredible and never gave up, despite the odds. Ridiculous finish, down a (wo)man for half the game, to come back against a very good Brazil team. It's an extremely impressive win, given the situation. But could today's game really be the "biggest win in US soccer history"? Am I just biased in favor of the mens team? Maybe, but was today's win really bigger than the 99 final? :shrug: Thoughts?

No. That's insane. It's as much the biggest win in US history as Derek Jeter is the greatest Yankee of all time.

I don't see how this could be more important than the WC win. If they win the WC this year it will be pushed to 3rd for the women.
