The biggest win in US Soccer history is easily Trinidad 1989. There's a good chance we don't get the '94 World Cup or MLS if the Nats lose that game. Who knows where this sport is today?

The second biggest win in US history was South Korea beating Portugal in 2002 instead of logically playing out a draw to allow both teams in. Instead, the US advances through the back door, which leads to dos a cero and the QF run which launches the game to new heights domestically (expansion, Beckham rule, etc).

As it turns out, their concerns were unfounded as the 94 World Cup is still the most financially successful in history despite only having 24 teams vs 32 now. But, if the US failed to qualify in 1990? Their credibility as hosts would have been irrevocably shot, and that backlash would have only gotten louder and stronger and FIFA might have capitulated to it.

I'm going to kick Time Warner Cable's ###. Once again, DVR crapped out- just in time to see Brazil go up 2-1 early in Extra Time.

Up until that point Brazil were a much better squad, IMO, even before the red card (harsh, but deserved for the last-man take down in front of goal.. but yeah, Martha sold it well). Martha and that other forward... Christians? were tearing up the US- the other one... amazing moves and foot skills. Nice to see the problems at LB aren't exclusively belonging to the men; there were some shambolic moments back there.

Another point of discussion- maybe- IMO, this team isn't as good as the 99 team, pretty much up and down the field. Thoughts?

The piece said the current U.S. team may owe its moment to 99, so I don't see how this win was bigger. It was just equally exciting.

The Brazil's win's place in history also is dependent on the next two games. No WC title takes the luster off of this - kind of like the Ghana game diminished the win over Algeria.

And on another topic, it shouldn't really bother me, but I find it wrong that the Brazilian women have the 5 stars on their jerseys. They've never won the cup.

yepI watched the entire game, as my usual sunday routine is get home from church, have a cup of coffee and sit down to watch soccer. Lo and behold this was the only game on, other than a replay of arsenal/fulham, and the coin landed on tails, so I watched the woman's game.

Great, great game. It was obvious that the Brazilians ran out of gas late, and you knew if it wen to pk's, they were toast. I think Abby Wambach is one of the most overrated women's soccer player ever - I mean she has amassed a ton of goals, but is slow, a poor ball handler, really all she is tall and has a decent touch, but that late goal was just awesome, granted the cross was outstanding, but still.

Obviously playing a man down for nearly an hour and getting shafted on a pk save makes this win that much more monumental, but still, it was a quarterfinal game. It was dramatic, sure, but not really historic, imho.

FWIW, officiating was plain awful all game long, both sides. Clear hand ball on Lloyd who should have been sent off. US also received a corner kick on a ball that clearly went off the US's leg, which amounted to a good scoring chance, and then another corner, which led to another decent chance, offside call against Brazil missed, and so on. I'm still trying to figure out if the re-kick on the pk was due to Solo leaving the line early, and if that was the case, that was one of the worst calls ever, or from a US player entering the area too early which I had not seen. Also, the Brazilian gk left the line early on every single US Pk, I wonder if the ref would have just let the US players continue making kicks.

Crowd was unfairly rough on Marta too, imho.

anywhoo, that's probably the last women's game I'll watch for about 3-4 years, unless the US makes it to the finals, in which case I may watch that.....well, that is unless they are showing a reply of a United game of any kind, hell, even the FA cup final they lost to Everton that they just showed a few weeks backs.

BTW- lost in the US Women's win... Mexico takes the u17 WC- again. Keep in mind, the current senior team is made up predominantly from the previous winners and still really young- like young 20s. Add in the best of this current World champion youth squad in 4-8 years, and that 2018 WC team is going to be scary good. SCARY good.

The days of the US competing or even holding their own vs El Tri is going to quickly be a sad, distant memory. As a positive, it will make the occasional results against them that much sweeter.

I had Colombia '94 as the third most significant result and I could easily be talked into it being 2nd. Trinidad legitimized the US as 94 hosts, Colombia then validated that selection. Would have been bad if the US went three and out at home.Re: Portugal, I still think 2002 is why we are where we are with the domestic game today as MLS was on the brink of collapse in the early part of the decade and the money started rolling in after that run (starting with the RSL and Chivas expansion in 2005). But the Portugal game is meaningless if the Koreans don't bail us out in the last group game.

It was. A keeper is NEVER yellow carded for moving off the line on a PK. A simply rekick is done if that is the case.

Obviously playing a man down for nearly an hour and getting shafted on a pk save makes this win that much more monumental, but still, it was a quarterfinal game. It was dramatic, sure, but not really historic, imho.

FWIW, officiating was plain awful all game long, both sides. Clear hand ball on Lloyd who should have been sent off. US also received a corner kick on a ball that clearly went off the US's leg, which amounted to a good scoring chance, and then another corner, which led to another decent chance, offside call against Brazil missed, and so on. I'm still trying to figure out if the re-kick on the pk was due to Solo leaving the line early, and if that was the case, that was one of the worst calls ever, or from a US player entering the area too early which I had not seen. Also, the Brazilian gk left the line early on every single US Pk, I wonder if the ref would have just let the US players continue making kicks.

Crowd was unfairly rough on Marta too, imho.

anywhoo, that's probably the last women's game I'll watch for about 3-4 years, unless the US makes it to the finals, in which case I may watch that.....well, that is unless they are showing a reply of a United game of any kind, hell, even the FA cup final they lost to Everton that they just showed a few weeks backs.

Good stuff pretty sure that recall on the PK was due to box infraction, not Solo moving forward- which she clearly didn't.

If the recall was due to the box infraction, why did Solo get the yellow? Seems like it had to be on her moving forward.

It was. A keeper is NEVER yellow carded for moving off the line on a PK. A simply rekick is done if that is the case.

They wouldn't even do it if it was habitual? If what you say is true, I'd come off the line every kick because they're not always going to call it.

Argentina with two straight disappointing draws, and are lucky they got a point in each game. Romero saved them in the first game, and Columbia missed a ton of chances last night.Messi didn't play well last night. You can tell he is frustrated, I have never seen him miss a free kick like he did last night around the 80th minute just outside the box. It seems like he is playing the "Xavi" role too much instead of his normal role. I'm not sure if it's the coach or he just feels he needs to be of a play maker for this team. I know its a new coach and anything is an upgrade from Maradona but they are not playing well at all. He needs to find a way to get his play makers all in the game. Aguero played well again last night. Higuian created some goal scoring opportunities too. Di Maria was creating in the first game and didn't even play last night.They have great strikers they can't even get on the field in Pastore and Milito. I know it's crazy and maybe I'm totally off but the coach might want to shake some things up and play Messi in a true creating midfield role and get some more strikers on the field. Whatever it is they need to do something because between the WC and Copa American, Argentina has not been living up to expectations.

Rewatching this WNT game, and I'm really noticing Christiane, perhaps moreso than Marta. Marta's the total package of skill and strength and quality, but Christiane might have better ball skills. In the first half, around the 35th or so, she had the ball on a run with no help and took it into the corner against 2 US defenders, basically inviting them to attack before she drag-nutmegged one of them. Impossible for any fan or player to not smile while watching that.
