Giuseppe "I'm American for everything except soccer " rossi reinjured his knee. 6 more months and obviously no euros
Yikes. Was this during training/rehab or was he already back playing in La Liga?
Training.From Ives:
Just as he was on the cusp of potentially returning to action for Villarreal, Giuseppe Rossi faces yet another long spell on the sidelines. The New Jersey-born Italian international tore his right ACL for the second time in the last six months during a training session and will be out for at least another six months, according to the club's official website. Aside from completely ruling him out from Italy's squad for this summer's European championship, Rossi will miss the opening months of Villarreal's 2012-2013 season as well, and any transfer value that he had for this summer -- he had been rumored to be seeking a move to a bigger club -- has also suffered a substantial blow. Rossi first tore his ACL during an Oct. 26 match against Real Madrid and had been working his way back to fitness with an eye on returning for Italy this summer. Without Rossi in the lineup, Villarreal have struggled mightily, scoring just 33 goals in 32 games. The Yellow Submarine sit in 17th place and just above the drop zone in La Liga, seven points clear of relegation with six games to go.

Awful. I expected him to eventually pass Reyna/Dempsey/Donovan as the best American born player ever. Now you certainly have to wonder if he is going to lose a step.

I think Villa's gone as soon as he can prove he's healthy from his injury. It's not like they've missed him much the last couple months, and he just doesn't have the same timing as everyone else.
I don't agree with the timing thing. I think Villa has proved himself fairly adaptable and fits pretty well in their system. He's just unnecessary and easy to sell. His slot on the bench is better off going to someone younger (and likely cheaper).

This is nice. After Ben Arfa's run last weekend Soccernet put together a First XI of 50+ yard runs ending with a goal. I saw a few of these live and had seen some of others on video, but some were also new to me.
Didn't watch the video, but you need to check out some of Neymar's runs this year. Dude has incredible balance and ball control, plus a top gear that can blow past defenders. He'll be playing in la liga or Serie A next year and will be a top 3 goalscorer in either league.
This is what's going to be really fun to watch. His top end is silly

So when Barcelona sign him does the Champions league get really boring for the next 5-6 years?
I can't think Barcelona's staff was very impressed with Neymar given his disappearing act against them in December.
I think a lot of his public accolades are generated from being a whale in a duck pond. He's obviously incredibly talented, but it's not like he is going to just walk into a top league and start doing the same things.

That works as long as Messi and Pedro aren't hurt. They've been blessed with him not missing many games this year due to injury. If both those guys go down they have Cuenca and Alexis Sánchez as back up. That's not a great stable of forwards, and I think that Barça drops points if both Pedro and Messi are hurt.I´m not saying that they shouldn't sell Villa, but rather that they need to find a suitable replacement, not just the next la masia flavor of the year.

I think he's got a VERY bright future in la liga or Serie A. Maybe not with the physical defending of the Prem, but he's got as much talent/skill/pace as Agüero IMO.

If Messi is hurt, they drop points regardless. Pedro is not having the best year so far. I don't think they are deep enough up front to sell Villa at all. I don't think he has done poorly fitting in, it is just a bit different of a role for him.

So after winning today it looks like Reading is almost assured promotion with three games left, while West Ham trails second place Southampton by six points with a game in hand.

Pedro is definitely the backup to Sanchez... he's much closer to Cuenca or Tello in the pecking order

Pedro's had a pretty lousy year, tbh. They can get by without him. If Messi goes down, I think you move Cesc to the false 9, and flank him with Alexis and Tello/Cuenca/Pedro depending on the matchups. Affelay is almost back as well.

There are too many moving parts to really know what FCB is going to do in the summer. When is Neymar expected to come over, if at all? When do they expect to promote (or loan out?) Dongou? Is Pedro OK? What can Villa fetch from an EPL team? How much money is there to spend, and how much is there after the backline has been addressed? All good problems to have, really.

Livorno's Piermario Morosini is dead after collapsing in a Serie B match against Pescara today. The match was abandoned.

Doesn't seem to be getting the immediate buzz that Muamba did, but I'm sure it will soon. Here's an article - link

US Soccer chose Tampa's Raymond James Stadium for the first home qualifier against Antigua and Barbuda.

It should be lovely to watch 12k-17k fans rattling around in a 65k NFL. What a shame we don't have any smaller stadiums built specifically for soccer anywhere in the country to use for these games.

With El Classico the weekend in between. As well as Chelsea-Arsenal. Great week.

Couple of interesting MLS games tonight.

The two best teams in the league square off when RSL plays at KC to see if they can be the first team to get some points off of KC.

The best offense in NY plays against one of the best defenses in SJ. Henry is off to arguably the strongest offensive start in MLS history. Will be fun to see if he continues and drags Cooper along with him.

People may have noticed that I did not list Benny Fielhaber in the depth charts for the final 23 or stand bys for this summer. He has been hurt and made his first sub appearance today since getting injured. He looked very good in his 30 or so minutes that he played but he will really need to play lights out to work his way back up the depth chart with the midfield being so deep.

And right on queue. 5 minutes into the game, Cooper scores again on an assist from Henry.

A very rare play occurred at the end of the half of the NY SJ game. So rare that I am not sure in all my years of watching I can recall this ever happening.

On the exact same play, two SJ players got hurt and both had to be subbed out of the game.

=======

In any event, 2-2 at halftime and American strikers keep scoring. Cooper with goal and assist and Wondo with a nice diving header goal. Both Cooper and Wondo share the league lead in scoring with Henry.

It was not that long ago we were looking at a US strike force that was so cold at club level it was scary that they could ever be considered international players and now we have players scoring all over the place.

Speaking of which, Altidore got another one today in a 3-2 loss. Leads AZ in goals.Edit: It was a sick goal too. My link

KC won again. They continue to be perfect on the season.

Their incredible streak of 335 minutes with out allowing a shot on goal ended in injury time tonight.

KC is not blessed offensively but Vermes really has the entire team bought into defense, from Sappong on back. They simply refuse to let the other team have any sort of sustained touches.

I can't say this is a team that looks CCL worthy yet but it is hard to argue with their perfect record. They already have a massive 8 point lead in the east after just 6 games. They have had more home games than away so far and that has helped them.

Brek Shea broke a long drought with the game winner for Dallas tonight in the 88th. Hope this gives him some confidence to get his swagger back to where he was last year at this time.

An inquiry into Morosini's death will be opened and will focus particularly on the car belonging to traffic police which blocked the ambulance's way into the stadium, creating a delay. A window had to be broken so the car could be moved, while players and officials were frantically gesturing for the ambulance to get there as quickly as possible.
Just awful.

It's been a long time since the US has had a striker that can make shots like those. Jozy has really grown by leaps and bounds this year IMO. I wonder if he'll start to get a sniff from other leagues (Ligue 1, EPL, etc.)

His pass at the 15 second mark is almost as good as the goal.

He did get some time in the EPL with Hull a few years back.

I went to the Battery season opener last night and sadly they lost 2-1.

This article from Saturday's paper talking about this being the 20th season for the club was interesting.

I think this snippet is worth sharing:

Charleston, Richmond and the Charlotte Eagles are celebrating their 20th seasons, making the three franchises the longest continuously operating professional soccer teams in the United States.
I did not know this.

That is a great piece of trivia! If I was to guess I would have said Portland or Seattle but they must have gone silent over the years in the lower divisions before coming back under the same names.
