Yeah, that is what I was thinking. From what I've seen, his weakness is with the long balls. Similar to De Gea. Not that I watch Atletico with great frequency.
I think De Gea is the better athlete, has better reactions (a la Iker). Curtois didn't make as many superb acrobatic saves as De Gea (although with Simeone, they've tightened up the D so much, he hasn't had to). Curtois needs to improve his quickness and communication. He's only adequate feeding info to the D especially on set pieces. Some of that might be language and experience, but he's not stellar in that respect. He does better than De Gea on the high balls, as he's a bit taller and broader than De Gea (6'6" vs. 6'4").But it really is impressive that Atlético found another very good young goalie to replace De Gea. I hope they can keep him for another year. Asenjo isn't bad, but I have to think that these last 2 years have really knocked his confidence what with being supplanted by a teenager twice, and having some serious knee injuries.

Poor guy has really fallen off the map recently from being the next big thing.

This could be very cool. But too bad the game is not only sold out but pulling ridiculous prices for stubhub/scalp tickets. Anybody going?

Red Bull Arena will host an open practice of Argentina’s national team on Thursday, June 7, at 7 p.m. Argentina plays Brazil at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on June 9. That game is sold out. Tickets for the practice, which cost $20 each, are available starting at 10 a.m. Friday by calling 877-RB-SOCCER or going to tickets.newyorkredbulls.com

Manchester United has blocked Mexico's request for Hernandez to be in the Olympics.
Why piss off a player that doesn't even start? What a bunch of #####.
I think you answered your own question.
We're all assuming Cheech wants to play in the Olympics. He seems to be quiet on the whole matter which makes me think it's not a big deal. If he wanted to raise a stink about it, he could probably convince MUFC and the Mexican Federation to stand down.Did he play in Copa America or the Gold Cup last summer?

Yes to Gold Cup (leading scorer), no to Copa America (at Sir Alex's request).

nope. I saw how many NYers star fornicated Ronaldihno in his prime when he played there. I can't even imagine how many condoms they are going to need for Messi.

Here we go again :( . This time it is Messi and "negro"

UPDATED MAY 10, 2012 1:41 AM ET Lionel Messi is adored around the world not only for his sublime soccer skills, but also for the way he carries himself in public. But the FC Barcelona star's reputation could take a hit after Royston Drenthe accused him of repeatedly calling him "negro" after an on-field altercation. The Telegraph reports Drenthe told a Dutch website that bad blood has existed between Messi and him for some time."I played against him many times and we always have problems with each other," Drenthe said. "You know what bothers me so? That tone with which he always says, 'negro, negro.'"I understand that 'negro' in South America is very common, but we can not stand it. Mahamadou Diarra, my team-mate at Real [Madrid], could explode if 'negro' was aimed at him. The Argentinean Gabriel Heinze and Gonzalo Higuain said it initially on the training ground, but they were stopped.""When Hércules played Barcelona, during the game I had a small altercation with him. He gave me a hand in the match and again said a few times, 'hola negro'."Drenthe, 25, is a Dutch player whose family hails from the South American country of Suriname. His rights are owned by Real Madrid, but he failed to make the grade at the Spanish giant. He has had loan spells at Hercules and Everton in the last two seasons.Neither Messi nor Barcelona have commented on the allegation. It can be potentially explosive, as the Argentine star is the reigning FIFA Ballon D'or winner and millions look up to him.It also has parallels with the case of Liverpool star Luis Suarez, who was fined and banned after he was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra by an FA panel.

Lionel Messi is adored around the world not only for his sublime soccer skills, but also for the way he carries himself in public.

But the FC Barcelona star's reputation could take a hit after Royston Drenthe accused him of repeatedly calling him "negro" after an on-field altercation.

The Telegraph reports Drenthe told a Dutch website that bad blood has existed between Messi and him for some time.

"I played against him many times and we always have problems with each other," Drenthe said. "You know what bothers me so? That tone with which he always says, 'negro, negro.'

"When Hércules played Barcelona, during the game I had a small altercation with him. He gave me a hand in the match and again said a few times, 'hola negro'."

Neither Messi nor Barcelona have commented on the allegation. It can be potentially explosive, as the Argentine star is the reigning FIFA Ballon D'or winner and millions look up to him.

It also has parallels with the case of Liverpool star Luis Suarez, who was fined and banned after he was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra by an FA panel.
"The player has always shown a maximum respect and sportsmanship towards his rivals, something which has been recognized by his fellow professionals many times, and we are sure that any accusations to the contrary are well wide of the mark," Barcelona said in a statement Thursday. "His behavior throughout his career has always been exemplary."

Going to be a busy weekend

*On Saturday I want to watch the home opener for Houston vs DC in the new stadium on NBCSN @4:30

*I want to see Seattle hosting RSL at 10:00 on Saturday night. . Two of the CCL teams this year and arguably the two best teams in the league right now.

*Then on Sunday I will likely watch the Man City vs QPR game since that game affects top and bottom of table at 10:00 on ESPN2.

*Then right after the Man City game I will try and watch some of NY @ Philly to get another look at Cooper, also on ESPN2

While watching the Man City game I will either stream or follow on Gamecast the Bolton game.

What are you guys watching this weekend?

South Americans just need to realize that people who aren't from South America take offense to being called negro. I don't think Messi is racist by any means but he might as well just save himself the trouble and knock that off.

Ferguson runs that place with an iron fist. If Hernandez was upset I doubt he would say anything publicly.

:goodposting: Or better yet, he shouldn't apologize in any way or say it isn't a problem and that people outside of his culture shouldn't be offended by it [/suarez]

Stale Solbakken will be the new Wolverhampton Wanderers manager. The 44-year-old Norwegian, who was sacked as Cologne's head coach last month, held talks with the Midlands club on Thursday and will be confirmed as Mick McCarthy's permanent successor in the coming days. His task will be to secure an immediate return to the Premier League in the wake of relegation this season.
Solbakken lasted less than a season at Köln and the team ended up being relegated on the last day of the season. I'll be interested to see how he fares with Wolves because he was criticized as being too wedded to his complex tactical system. Somebody that's too tactical for the Bundesliga will find things different in the Championship. He's an ex-Wimbledon player but he probably didn't learn anything about tactics there.

Great performance by Atlético. Bilbao could have definitely won this game. They had a ton of shots and a bunch on goal. It was dicey for a while, but they'll be celebrating in Neptuno tonight.
Yeah. Courtios did very well too. Probably no chance for Atletico to keep him, right?
Cech is almost 30 and it appears neither Turnbull nor Hilario will be able to fill his boots. I think most Chelsea fans see Courtios as the man, but I have no idea what the team thinks. If he loves Madrid, Atletico and the Liga as much as he lets on in public, it may be hard to bring him back to London. There has been some talk that, if he is to eventually succeed Cech at Chelsea, he will want to go on loan for a year or two somewhere in England first.
Cech's looked pretty damn good the last few meaningful games Chelsea has had. And if he brings home the Champion's League trophy.....

This was a topic on The Football Show yesterday and would like to see what you guys think.

Give me Micah Richards as my RB. Replace Skrtel with Coloccini, Hart with Vorm and I'm good with it. I probably wouldn't have picked Demps as a wing and so not sure I'd have found a place for him. But you can't argue he's been fantastic.

can swap him with Rooney, but yeah, he needed a spot somewhere.

Richards or Zabaleta work for me, both have been solid.

Puyol wannabe Coloccini can come off the bench. Skrtel has been a beast back there. :homer:

Great timing. :( . Hopefully this can heel before WCQing starts

Egypt is 8-2-1 since Bob Bradley took over as national team coach. Their only loss was in his first game vs. Brazil. They have three more friendlies this month against Cameroon, Togo and Senegal that will reveal a lot about their strength heading into concurrent qualifying campaigns for the WC and 2013 ANC.

I don't know much about Egypt's squad but I have to assume that a decent number of them play in the Egyptian domestic league which means they have not been getting any playing time right?

Yeah, the majority play in Egypt. Lots of them play for Al-Ahly, the team that lost the game that sparked the riot.

Looking forward to this. Tickets have been sold out for a while now and crappy seats going for $100+. Actually most of the decent seats to Dynamo matches throughout the season are already sold - bodes well for Houston soccer and the MLS in general. Plan on catching that Charity Cup v. Valencia for my first match. Maybe, this will be the first season I follow MLS. It's just tough for me watching inferior players/play as I constantly compare it to proper club football in Europe.

15 days until US Soccer kicks into full gear.

Some Random Thoughts...

1) It should be great to see Jozy/Dempsey/Donovan all on the same pitch while in relatively good form...that's never happened.

2) Back line should be improved upon from last WC, left back has been obviously stronger IMHO. On the other hand, Dolo is getting old.

3) Midfield is the wildcard IMHO. It feels like we've been all over the place in the mf over the past year.

4) I'd like to see some of the young guns get spots on the team for the experience, as opposed to filling those spots with journeymen or 30 somethings...more Bedoya, less Wondo/Beckerman.

P.S. Freddy Adu still has the best ball skills of any American. :boxing:

I read somewhere that the USMNT, and the entire youth system, are moving to a 4-3-3. Thoughts on if this is a good fit for America, generally speaking? I would've thought a 4-2-3-1 might be better for the US, but I'm a tactics n00b.

It's pretty easy to switch back and forth between those formations as the two wide midfielders in the 4-2-3-1 generally play as wingers anyway. The 4-2-3-1 is just a bit more compact.

I dont watch enough of the entire league to have an educated opinion, but I cant believe Zabaleta is the best they have to offer back there....but I also find it hard to believe Aguero isnt up there with Van Persie.Micah Richards is really good at pushing up on offense, so that is always going to make him look sexier imo.

I have posted a bunch on this topic in the past. Tab Ramos has stated that his U20 will employ a 4-3-3The U23's failed miserably in Olympic qualifying with the 4-3-3.Klinsmann is on record multiple times saying that he is no longer married to a 4-3-3 but we will see what he uses this summer. Can't wait.

I follow two teams as much as possible right now while trying to add teams in the other major leagues (Dortmund could be one so I will catch the German Cup).

The Good: La Vecchia Signora

The Bad: Wolves

I don't participate much in here since I often don't watch the games I can live. I love me some ESPN3.
