I am not completely sure as I don't follow the Mexican League much, but I think Santos is out of the playoffs and as such Herculez Gomez should be available for call up against Russia.

The US U17 team recently went down to South America for a bunch of games against other U17 national teams and did ok

US 3 Uruguay 1

US 5 Chile 1

US 1 Argentina 3

US 2 Paraguay 2

U17 World Cup Qualifying starts in April in Panama (tournament format). Top 4 teams qualify for WC.

Big name on the US team is obviously Junior Flores, but it will be fun to get a look at the whole team. Hopefully FSC or one of the Spanish stations will cover the qualifying tournament.

Ok? I'd say pretty damn good. Can't expect to beat Argentina. Shouldn't have expected to beat Uruguay. Good job by the wee ones.

Good news!

Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks have both added beIN Sport in English according to Soccer America. I believe both will offer in Spanish as well.
Floppo, is this available for you now in NY?
Checking now- thanks! totally missed the original post.
Congratulations! beIN SPORT is available on Time Warner Cable channel #449 and HD channel #429*. :excited: ... checking the tv now- I can just see it not working.

Looks like Gatt got the call.

==================

Joshua Gatt ‏@JoshuaGatt

Champion two years in a row! Does it get any better than this?! Got an early flight tomorrow as well. All good stuff!!!!

Tough one on DC. First the guy who could have been red carded scores, and then moments after a goal line header clearance, Houston takes the lead.

Fun game

extra $9 a month, which includes other sports channels... not going to do that. but apparently they'll prorate it if I order it for a day to watch the US play- a pain in the ###, but say la vee.

Oh well, at least you have the prorate option. If they prorate for one day out of 30, that is only 30 cents, which could be cheaper than going to a bar.

Not sure when roster will be released today but from tweets and other reports we may know the following

In: Herc, Jozy, Chandler, Gatt

Out: DMB (with the lack of wingers it was speculated he might get called)

Can anyone who saw Spurs vs. Man City tell me how Friedel looked? The highlight of the second goal I saw looked like he should have saved it. Half of twitter says he played great, the other half says take him out for Lloris.

I only saw the last 30 minutes but he made a few good saves and the commentators were talking as if he'd had a good game.* I wouldn't say he should have saved the second goal but he could have. He didn't have a lot of time to react.*That may just have been for the benefit of a US audience.

Not that I have any idea what this article states but from the headline and a couple of words, it looks like Mix was calledhttp://fotball.adressa.no/eliteserien/article257249.ece

Interesting. Someone very young or a guy with dual eligibility that we anticipated losing to his other country?

Hopefully it's not just some old guy who's never been called because he isn't any good

Aron Johansson seems like a good bet. He pulled out of Iceland's World Cup qualifiers. He's another striker, leading the Danish league in goals. Odds are high that he will probably move into the Eredevisie in January.

In hindsight, it's easy to say that Friedel should have maybe rushed Dzeko while he was waiting for the ball to drop and to get his hips around. I don't think you can blame Brad for not being able to get his hands up in time to stop a shot at that pace, but he could have given Dzeko less to shoot at (but he would have risked giving up a rebound with an open goal). I still think rushing out is the percentage play.

I watched the game. Thought he looked good all game. Like Christo says, the second goal wasn't anywhere near a blunder on his part- the shot went up above his shoulders, IIRC, and not in his normal range of motion for his hands (his hands were well positioned for a low, hard drive). Very hard for a GK to make that save, although not impossible.

USSoccer tweeted the roster. The other debutante (who is not that much of a surprise) is Gyau. Another player I've been looking forward to seeing in the senior set up, and he's starting to get consistent minutes with St. Pauli. Gatt, Gyau, and Chandler increase the pace of the USMNT significantly. Of course, if pace alone were enough we'd still be calling Marvell Wynne.

Drafted first by the MIGHTY, MIGHTY MetroBulls, it should be pointed out. Yet another fine choice in a history of fine choices by the club.

That Jozy goal over the weekend was dope, btw. The little- we used to call them "sombreros" (when you pop the ball over a guy's head or shoulder- was incredible, as was the subsequent volley.

I hope Jozy does some of the things JK's looking out of him for this camp. I support the poo-pooing of the guy if he's not doing all the little things that lesser players do, but if he's scoring goals... he's gotta play (of course, he hasn't been scoring goals for the US, so that needs to change PDQ).

One of the problems is that the USMNT already has a guy who does none of the little things but score goals. It's why Dempsey drives me nuts. We can't sit him, because the guy is always a threat to poach a goal. But he drives me crazy stopping the ball in the offensive end. It's gotten to the point that I know that the more profanity laced tirades I throw at Clint, the more likely he will score.Jozy and Clint just don't work together. At all. I often think that Jozy's occassional problems with the Nats stem from when we ask him to do stuff he isn't very good at. He's not a hold up striker. Yeah, he's a strong guy. But he's 22. He's too naive to hold up play. And it doesn't come naturally to him. Running the channels comes more naturally to him, but when Herc is already doing that, there's not a lot of room for Jozy. If we want the best out of Jozy, I think we need to consider what type of players would fit best with him. My own short list is Klestjan (a guy who plays a similar pass and move game), Landon (who has combined well with Jozy in the past), and probably a more advanced Bradley. In a 4-4-2, having Boyd in there for the dirty work seems a decent choice as well.

Here is the full roster

U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION Detailed Roster

GOALKEEPERS (3): Tim Howard (Everton), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

DEFENDERS (6): Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Timmy Chandler (Nuremberg), Maurice Edu (Stoke City), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Michael Bradley (Roma), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Joshua Gatt (Molde), Joe Gyau (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim)

FORWARDS (4): Juan Agudelo (Chivas USA), Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Herculez Gomez (Santos Laguna)

Is Chandler still playing Lucy to the US fans Charlie Brown or will he hold the football this time?

ussoccer.com: What were some of the issues you felt were holding you back from being fully committed?

TC: “I was a young player trying to get settled into my club team and wasn’t sure about the long travel and everything that goes into being a part of this National Team. My coaches didn’t like the idea, so I think even I felt some pressure. I’ve had a chance to get settled in with the club and also have grown up a lot. I know what I want to do.”

ussoccer.com: What are your emotions now being back in with the team?

TC: “I’m excited to be back as a part of the group. This is a great group of guys. I hope they accept me back into the team. I’m very happy to be here.”

ussoccer.com: Given what has transpired in the last two years, there may be some people who are skeptical of your commitment to the U.S. team at this point?

TC: “I understand that a lot of people in the USA may be unsure because they think I have said [i’m committed] in the past. All I can say is that I am clear in my head about the commitment moving forward. This was about me being ready to accept the responsibility of being a part of the National Team and everything that goes with it, and now I am ready. I hope I will get chances in the future. I am in 1,000 percent.”

Also, I think Jozy's biggest improvement recently is his finishing with his left foot. That makes him a very, very tough cover considering his strength and speed on the dribble. You can't just negate him by shading him left anymore.

While Joe Gyau is listed as being with Hoffenhiem, he is on loan all year to St Pauli.

Of the roster, Edu and Gyau are the two getting the least playing time (Edu all but none at Stoke). Gyau is starting to see some games lately though for St Pauli.

Gatt and Gyau both give extreme speed on the wings. Gatt is said to be the fastest US player in the system.

Ok let's see if I can remain perfect in the Klinsmann era for never once guessing the starting lineup right

................Howard

Cher......Cam........Boca.......Fab

......................Williams

............Bradley.............Jones

Gatt ...........................................Dempsey

......................Herc

Possible subs at halftime or second half

Chandler for Cher

Edu/Goodson for Boca

Gyau for Gatt

Jozy for Herc

Sacha for Jones

As for Jozy, like many others I really hope that he can find his way into the starting lineup early in the hex for two reasons.

1) I think he is the best forward we have and we need him to join with Bradley to form a nexus for the team to build around for the next 6 years like Dempsey and Donovan before them

2) Gomez has spent a lot of time as a sub at club level and is affective off the bench which is not a skill everyone has who is used to starting. It would be nice to have an experienced player who understands how to use his 25 minutes to the max during qualifying.

And while Wynne certainly has some deficiencies he was a serviceable club level player. No super star but solid enough. Now lets have some real fun and remember NY's brilliant pick in the 2000 draft, arguably the worst single pick in MLS history.

NY had the number 1 pick of the entire draft and with highly regarded players like Nick Rimando, Sascha Victorine, Nick Garcia, Carlos Bocanegra, Danny Califf, Bobby Convey and a few others in the draft, NY shocks everyone with picking Steve Shak, who was projected as a late 3rd round, early 4th round level player.

Steve Shak was out of the league by the next season.

It'll be difficult to get it right given it looks like the roster you quoted above doesn't include Dempsey.

:wall: this ####### club.

fwiw, though, with Shak- IIRC, he was the top youth prospect and making people in the soccer community really excited about his prospects. I don't remember if that was before college or if he even went to college or how long before the draft, but I do remember his name well prior to that draft and being optimistic myself about him (even if it wasn't exactly optimal VBD).

He was a player at UCLA and played on a youth team that I think Octavio Zombrano (coach of NY that season) was involved with. Still though he was no where near as highly regarded on his own college team as he played with Boca. If NY wanted a defender, Boca and Garcia were the two studs in that draft. Or if they really fell in love with Shak, trade the pick and move down. It's not like Shak was going to get scooped immediately. It really made no sense. I was wrong though above, he was not out of league the next season, he was traded to Colorado but barely saw the field with them and then was out of league.

Reminder that the US game is much earlier than normal for those that want to set dvr's as it is a rare morning start because of location.

The telecast starts at 10:00am on ESPN2

Yikes, I am so used to Dempsey and Cherundolo on the team, I just assume they were there with out looking closer at roster. Just realized it when I read a tweet from Grant Wahl. I figure Zusi was not called due to needing a rest. Made some changes to the lineup above.

Thinking that Klinsmann is likely to keep Cam in the middle, I think Chandler might get the start, be that good or bad.

Joe Gyau actually has a game with St Pauli today so he is not even in camp yet. Probably significantly reduces his chances of seeing the field on Wednesday.

btw- WOW did LA look good yesterday. crisp on and off the ball, lots of movement, fantastic team shape, and lots of class in the final touch- and not just from the big 3. I was really impressed.
