I am going to tape both MLS Cup and the Madrid derby and watch later tonight hopefully. MLS Cup starts at 4:30 today on ESPN.Fortunately there are no conflicts for the Franchise vs AFC Wimbledon game tomorrow.Unfortunately it's on at 4:30AM PST

There is always a ton of competition this time of the year. It is almost impossible to schedule around. The Madrid Derby is of no consequence since the household reach is still very very small for beIN. That game won't even draw 1/10th of what the MLS Cup will (which should come in north of 600k or so viewers). The SEC championship game hurts but the league already took 2 weeks off from the last game. Waiting any longer would not be viable IMO. There is no easy answer but dvr's makes things a lot easier.'Txns8 said:

I thought Carr's injury changed the tone of the match. He was giving LA a lot of trouble. After that, the Galaxy took the match by the throat.
Keane has been outstanding during these playoffs (and since July, actually). I thought it was pretty funny that the Houston keeper smacks Keane in the crotch as he is going by and then asks the ref how that was a foul.

By the way, with his two goals today Messi is one away from the record of goals scored in one calendar year. That record (85) is currently held by Gerd Muller of Germany. I believe Messi still has two or three games left. He passed Pele's previous record several weeks ago.

Big Omar had a solid game in both phases of the game today. I assume this should solidify his call up to the January camp.
Decent end to another overall up season for MLS.
Going to be tough to keep this run going for MLS of steady improvement. Next year will mark the first time since 2004 that the league won't be either having an expansion side and/or opening a new stadium.

Not often you see St Phil out in public like that. You could tell he was very uncomfortable. Very cool though, especially as this may be the last time he has any real contact with the league he saved if and when AEG is sold.

Retired, do you know how salary levels for each team are determined in MLS? I don't find much good on this and I'd like to better understand the league's current financial structure.

Here is what was in the message. ============================Here are the high level basics. 1) each team has a salary cap of $2.8m for players 1-20 on the roster2) each team also has 3 "designated player" slots that they can pay what ever they want in salary to those players and they will only count for $350k against the cap if over 23 years old and $200k if between 21-23 and $150k if 20 and under3) teams also receive allocation money from league for qualifying for certain items(long list of things like qualifying for CCL etc)Here is a link to what every player in MLS makes. It gets more complicated when thinking of roster spots after #20, dealing with generation adidas players, transfers and looking at all of the ways a team can receive allocation money.

I only hope whomever ends up with AEG and/or the Galaxy is as supportive of soccer as Anschutz has been. The guy is the patron saint of MLS.

I figure the next owner will still run the Galaxy the same way but might try and divest the 50% they own in Houston (as AEG wanted to earlier this year but then the deal fell through). Bayern hosted current two time defending champion Dortmund today in a match between 1st and 3rd in the table.
Kroos in the 67th for Bayern and Götze in the 74th for Dortmund and everyone gets a point.

Benny Fielhaber, someone many of us have liked at times on the Nats, continues to be a mess at club level. One of the worst teams in MLS, the Revolution, decided to not pick up Benny's contract for next season.
Now granted much of that is due to his salary but still speaks loudly as to how he has been performing.
Strangely he can not sign with another MLS team unless his rights are traded for. He is 27.

Four games, but I'm guessing he probably sits in this Wednesday's meaningless CL game against Benfica. At least I'd hope.That would leave Betis, Atletico, and Valladolid. Only Atletico's at home.

Thanks! What I'm trying to sort out is how NY and LA have salary levels 3-4x the other teams in the league. How is that decision made? Can all clubs spend that much if they want to?IIRC one of the original benefits of the SEM was to keep a level playing field?

NY and LA each have 3 designated players on multi-million dollar contracts. Theoretically any team could do this, but it's not funded by the league, the owner has to pay out of pocket.It's a tough balancing act. MLS is trying to find a way to allow the likes of Beckham and Henry to come abroad without hurting the competitive balance too much.

The league has emerged slightly from the SEM days where the local owners have more control of the revenue they earn and more control of the money they spend. See #2 in my post for why there is such a huge disparity. Yes, theoretically every team could spend as much as they want since the 3 DP slots are uncapped.Also it is worth noting that while MLS preached SEM from day 1 they were never a level playing field in the salary department. Back in the day players like Donadoni, Campos, Hernandez, Mattheus, Lalas, Zenga and others made way way more than other players. The biggest difference today is that all of the salaries are published so that we know exactly how much each squad costs where we never did years ago.

I know he's ancient, but I have no idea how Friedel is so low. He's arguably better than Howard and they've got him behind Guzan?

Guzan is playing very well putting up some great starts in the last month. Friedel may have lost his starting spot at Spurs not having played in the last 4 league games. The rankings change every month. Friedel dropped in this months rankings and Guzan improved to reflect their current form. It is an inexact science at best but I have no problems with the rankings having Guzan ahead of Friedel at this specific moment in time.They do need to figure out some rules for this rankings system though. As much as we all like Holden and I personally think he would have been a top 10 player right now, it seems off that he is as high as #29 without having played a league game since March of 2011.

Well we knew that both NY and RSL were going to make big changes and Ives is reporting they are about to kick off a busy off season.
*RSL will send Fabian Espindola and Jamison Olave to NY in exchange for a significant amount of allocation money.
*RSL will trade Will Johnson to Portland for allocation money.
That allocation money, which should be pretty big is going to give RSL some flexibility to retool their team.
I am hopeful that NY getting Olave may mean they are going to finally get rid of Marquez.
