Yeah, I don't care about trophy droughts. I certainly don't think winning the Oceania Cup means anything more than winning the dumb Emirates Cup in preseason.

In terms of the health of the club, Arsene is right. "Fourth place" is a more significant trophy than the F.A. Cup. And it's a lot more significant than the League Cup. Arsenal got over 40 million from being in the Champions League last year.

I want Arsenal to win, or at least to strongly compete in, the EPL and the CL. Which means not finishing 20 + points behind the champs. I don't care about anything else. Arsene can start Gedion Zelaylem against Bradford City in the League Cup. If it works, fine. If not, I won't lose any sleep.
:goodposting:

As I said above, the League Cup win wasn't even enough to save Dalglish's job three months later, so that tells you right there how insignificant it is.

But they'd damn well better start spending some money on improving the team - and improving the first team this year not in some future year, e.g. Sanogo or Bernard.

Hendo shouldn't be included in there...he'd keep everyone but Wilshire on the bench at Arsenal
 He couldn't carry Cazorla's jock.
Yep, it sure sounds like Arsenal's lack of activity in the market (what a surprise) is sure making the natives restless.

Oops
When was Liverpool's last trophy? Just curious.
2012. Same as Tahiti.
FA Cup?
Carling.

And I hear ya, RHE and T Bell. I really have no animosity whatsoever towards Arsenal. If Liverpool don't win it, I always pull for them over Man U, City or Chelski. I just felt the need to defend my club when mud started being thrown around. I realize that the Carling Cup is not a major trophy, and that they have never won the league since it went to the Prem, but there just seems to be a lot of misplaced aggression towards 'Pool when it should be placed on Wenger.

This aggression will not stand, man!

Bernard is the best player on Atletico Miniero. I think he'd immediately improve the team. Pablo Osvaldo, who is the rumour du jour, strikes me as a good backup plan at striker.

I like Higuain fine, but I don't like him for 40 million euros. If Napoli wants to eat up 70% of their Cavani take on him, they can be my guest.

If Bernard can play as a false 9, then I might be more in enthusiastic about that move, but that's still a big chunk out of their transfer budget for a guy who doesn't squarely fit an area of need on the team.

Arsenal finished above Spurs by one point both of the last two years. Spurs are buying and Arsenal is sitting still. Good luck!

False 9 is such an overrated tactical concept IMO. It has really handicapped Barcelona since Pep moved Messi to it instead of using an outright CF.

I think Bernard is meant to be like a Mata or an Oscar. And I do think attacking midfield is a big need for Arsenal. I think that's highlighted by how many people identify Wilshere (who is a CM) as an attacking midfielder. He's not. In truth, neither is Walcott. Or Podolski for that matter. Both would be better served as a wide midfielders or central strikers. I think that Arsene wants to play a 4-2-3-1. And I think he wants to mimic the flexibility of Chelsea or Man City at their best. Bernard, like Mata, can play anywhere along the supporting attacking line.

Yeah, Spurs are an exciting team. Of course, I think you guys were awfully reliant on Bale last year. I wouldn't count on him having a number 20+ goal season from that position.

And you haven't exactly gotten your entire wish list this summer either (Benteke says hello from beautiful Villa Park). I have high hopes for Chadil, but you paid 7 million. You got a deal, but he wasn't valued over 10 million. And Holtby hasn't really worked out. I like Paulinho, but I imagine Arsenal will end up with a two way midfielder (it's a shame they couldn't get Lars Bender from Leverkeusen).

Lloris and Vertonghen were sweet pick ups though. Congrats.

If that's the case, then I'm more in favor of him. I just don't want to sign another exclusively wide player when our needs are really in the center of the field.

I still think Holtby will be a good player for them. They played him too high last year imo.

They have a strong team. Still missing that striker though. I'm worried that they'll finish ahead of United this year.

Moyes can't drag them down that quick, can he?

I think Ferguson had that team playing beyond its talent level the last few years. They're definitely a very good team, but do you look at that roster, particularly in the all-important midfield, and say "Wow!"?

I could easily see them finishing third this year, behind Chelsea and City. God help Moyes if they finish lower than that.

I'm definitely a Gooner, but I have no illusions about what they need to do and I'm VERY disappointed today about news of the Higuain signing with Napoli being finalized. I can't for the life of me see how getting him for 32M isn't a huge steal, particularly when it's going to require as much as 50% more than that number to get Suarez.

So yeah, I'm one of the restless natives, but it's not so much for the "8 years without a trophy" as it is with the ineptitude with which they seem to be going about their business this summer when they've got an opportunity to become a serious contender for the PL title. I don't understand what they're doing.
I find the Higuain miss a bit baffling. I imagine Spurs would have jumped at him had they been in a CL position. Given what strikers are going for that's a more than reasonable ask for a young, proven striker.

I'm good with them wasting their time chasing Suarez though.

what he did in the last three years is nothing short of amazing. That roster simply isn't up to par with City or Chelsea.

I expect they will be duking it out for third or fourth this year.

Pretty much. I hope they finish third, but Tottenham and Arsenal are right there. Especially if they add players and United don't.

 If Arsenal pulls a rabbit out of a hat with some neat transfer dealings which improve them, and Spurs hold onto Bale, it's not automatic by any means that United even finishes top four. And if they lose Rooney to Chelsea, who do they get? Ronaldo, Cesc and Bale supposedly are staying put. Lewandowski wants to go to Bayern.

It's definitely going to be an interesting year for them.

Some really nice combination play up the middle for the goals. And man, that ref. Holden got absolutely rocked by that elbow in the face. Its atleast a yellow, quite possibly a straight red. Once again this half, wide play came nearly entirely down the right side. Nice half overall, and thought we weathered the initial pressure after the first goal better than we'd done previously. Just amazing to think this is the B team and its truly dominating the tourney.

These wins are awesome ... and do mean something since we've never had a run like this before and have played these teams many times. Plus we're scoring like (insert joke here).

But it's Costa Rica away and Mexico home twice in the next 50 days or so that will give us a better idea how much weight to give this last bunch of games. Would like to see the current form carry over into at least two wins in terms of playing against good teams in meaningful competitions.

Anyone else hoping to see some straight to the grass slide tackles and maybe some dives and while tooling on the ground see the players just pulling up the grass?

I know it makes me a small person, but games like these have always made me wish we had a complete nutter like Roy Keane that we could sub in to make sure that the opponent paid a price for the knees, elbows and studs. Opposing teams are waaaaay too comfortable taking shots at US players. Pisses me off that we never give it back in full.

One of the reasons I've come around on Jermaine Jones.
