This is shaping up to be a much deeper team. I'm still not sure we have any natural fullbacks (Fab was awful until he moved up to the wing today, but Evans was pretty solid). But the spine of the team is looking stronger. Brooks had a few problems, but I thought he mostly handled himself well and played at least as well as Cameron. He was closer to getting back on the line for the first goal than Geoff (and probably hesitated to cover the centering pass because Geoff hesitated too much). He's definitely good enough to really push Gonzo and Goodson (it's still Goodson and Besler starting for me right now).

Johannsson was a bit of a revelation. I'd love to see what he can do wide, but suddenly that in the hole position is crowded as hell with Deuce, Landon and AJ.

I'm still teetering between replacing Jones in the starting lineup. When Jones is off his game, Bradley is less clear of his role. Bradley didn't play great in the first half. He was immaculate in the second half, mostly with Jones sitting on the bench.

I don't think you can drop him. He provides experience that pretty much no one else has on the US team, and is arguably, in my mind, the #3-4 best player on the team when at the top-top of his game, behind Bradley and Howard and maybe Landon. He wasn't good today, but him + Bradley, if they're both on, could be a fantastic duo next summer.

Is Yo-Hansen tied to the US now?
Yes, because he got capped with the senior team. No turning back now.
Playing didn't cap tie him. Brooks, for instance, isn't cap tied. AJ is cap tied because FIFA approved his one-time switch. Brooks won't be cap tied until he plays in a qualifier.
But Johanssen didn't have any Iceland caps. This was his first international cap. Am I missing something here?

I think he is more expendable than that. I remember how worried we were about him missing the Panama game and then Cameron was MoM candidate in Jones' role. If he keeps playing like he did today I'd rather see Cameron take his place.

I don't really know how to weigh Jones vs the options (would love to know what measures a coach uses), but I will say that by the historical standards of the USMNT this is a luxurious problem to have.

I've always wondered this and I'm curious if anyone has a take on this:

Is the US (and others like England) at a disadvantage against other countries due to the English language? Is English common enough amongst other internationals that most understand and can hear communication enough for it to matter? Whereas when the US goes against most other countries (like today) where they don't understand anything about communication on the field and don't have a similar advantage (if there is one).
An interesting question and one I've wondered myself. While English is pretty universal, I don't know that players would be fluent enough for it to help, but maybe it could be a factor. The same goes for a player that plays in a country long enough to learn the language then his home nation plays them. (Ribery knows enough German, does it help when France plays Germany?)

Everyone in South America speaks Spanish (outside of Brazil, and I bet they speak enough). Are the dialect differences enough or do they all understand each other?

I don't think it's that big a deal. You probably just hear a lot more of "Pass!" "I was open!" "Close in faster next time!" and lots of versions of "Son of a #####!" You may catch a "Watch their high line", or "They're starting to play wider", but I don't think anything to really make a difference .

He was over 21 and had played for Iceland youth teams. Therefore his only route to the USMNT was through a FIFA approved one-time switch, which, once approved, is binding. So Bacon was cap-tied whether he played today or not. Similar situation to Jermaine Jones.

Under 21 players (like Brooks) only get cap-tied in full internationals (I.e. non-friendlies). I'd call him up in October and end any chance of backtracking. He's that talented.

Bump this ahead of the new Euro season. I have NOT gone through and moved teams up/down divisions as appropriate, so don't kill me. I will fix it if you see something that needs to be changed. Please advise of any changes. Thanks.

Fulhamerica
Caught an interview with Shahid Khan and he talked about the direction he wants to go and expanding Craven Cottage. He talked about extending part of it over the River Thames and getting it up to 40,000

Should be fun to watch him develop Fulham.

Just busting chops over ChelseaWhat game are you going to?
Went to the Chelsea/Man City game here in St Louis a few months ago. Had to root against all the Bosnians cheering for Dzeko so here I am. Plus, we have the Blues here as well. It just kinda fit.

When I went, seemed like the whole neighborhood was already going to the game. Not sure they need significantly more capacity.

Going over the river or expanding by 15k?
Both. Look at a map of SW6. There's no room to expand Craven Cottage. It's right on the Thames with a neighborhood surrounding it. There's parkland on the other side of the river.

Fulham is a small club who have overachieved over the past 15 years under Al Fayed. That was the club Khan bought, not some sleeping giant with enormous untapped commercial potential. He said all the right things about being a caretaker of the club when he first bought FFC but he's now exposing himself as an ugly American who's more interested in a land grab of some very valuable real estate.

If Napoli grab Gustavo you can officially add me to the hate Napoli list.

Also, go ahead and add me to Roma. Going to really try to watch their games this year. Hopefully Cox picks up BeIn soon.

I'm all for Arsenal getting Gustavo, but I like just about everything about Napoli.

They're a fun-to-watch attacking team playing in a defensive-minded league, they're ambitious and willing to spend, they have Hamsik, they were Maradona's club, I dig the light blue uniforms, and so on.

Watching more Serie A isn't a huge priority for me but if I do, Napoli will be my team.

Interesting odds for the EPL this year...

Man City at 23/10, Chelsea at 24/10 and Man United at 27/10 basically co-favorites.

Altidore 19th most likely to be the leading goal scorer around 6.5/1.
