***Official Soccer Discussion Thread*** (4 Viewers)

I have decided to be a soccer fan. I've got tickets to a few matches, follow a couple of local blogs, and want to know more about the game.

Where can I learn about X's and o's, position responsibilities, and just basic strategy? I want to understand what I'm watching better.
Watch, watch, watch and ask questions here.

Youtube, wiki, blogs, tweeter all help

What are the chances Arsenal have a late transfer flourish this month? Remember in 11-12, they started 0-1-2 for 1 point from 3 games, including an 8-2 loss vs. United, and then bought Andre Santos, Mertesacker, Arteta, and Park Chu-Young, and brought in Yossi Benayoun on loan, all on either 8/30 or 8/31.
That will probably happen.

I know they're going to bring players in - they were anyway but they don't even have a starting 11 now - but it takes time for everyone to gel. The question becomes can they claw their way back into the top four after a slow start? I don't know - the league's stronger overall than it was.

Arteta is really the only one that made any impact that year. Bringing in a lot if mediocre players late in the window doesn't generally work out that well.

I disagree. Mertesacker is a good CB. Not great, but steady and capable.

Regardless, you can't save it until the end to do your business. It's ridiculous that they find themselves in this position.

He took time to settle in. His first year was poor.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Yeah, he wasn't really in any sort of form until the second half of the season, and then he suffered a freak foot injury in April or so.

Are all these EPL games going to be on this NBCSports channel? For some reason this isn't included in DTV's Sports pack....

Santos and Benayoun were decent. I agree with you otherwise, though I don't know if it's really possible to know whether the signing will end up being crap or not unless you do it.

Except for Park. I never understood that move.

They have an addtional set of new channels (491-495 I think). I don't know if it is part of the Sports Pack.
Thanks, I'll check it out as a work around. Sounds like I'd have to get a higher package to get 220. Really lame that it isn't on the Sports Pack with BeIn and FSC.

:goodposting: all around.

Yossi was a good loan signing for them. I always forget about him. And he's available on a free right now... :bag:

What were the Arses chanting there at the end? Could anyone make it out?
It may have been "you don't know what you're doing", directed at Arsene. I saw tweet saying that.

The biggest culprit for this result was the ref, but the squad is embarrassingly thin, just as we've known all summer.

Is it just me or is the sound ahead of the picture ever so slightly? Michu's going up for a header and Arlo White is telling me that he's hit it wide before Michu makes contact.

I remember being quite impressed with Santos early on. I think he pretty much walked into the team and started that weekend, IIRC. Pretty sure Armand Traore played all 90 in the 8-2 loss and then was sold like the next day to QPR, and Santos started the very next week. It wasn't until last season that he really started to look out of place.

I've always liked Benayoun. He's not going to carry a team against the top teams but he's more than capable of "Arsenal caliber" play against the rest of the league.

btw...Jonjo Guzan looked awesome in the 30 minutes I saw. Really commanded his area and had two great saves. Has matured into a pretty solid keeper.

I was wrong, Santos was on the bench for his first Arsenal game - Sagna/Mertesacker/Koscielny/Gibbs on D - and got the start the next weekend. Not that it matters, but I looked it up.

Santos was always shaky on defense, diving into tackles to save himself from poor positioning, etc., but what I most recall from his earliest appearances were his shockingly bad passes. He was a colorful guy, but he was never good enough to be playing for AFC.

BTW, Traore was let go right after that 8-2 debacle in no small part because he was seen laughing and joking right after it.

Yeah I remember that Traore thing. I always thought he had some serious potential....I suppose he still could, hard to believe he's just 23.

Santos just wasn't very good at defense. He got forward as well as, or perhaps sometimes better than, both Sagna and Gibbs but was a defensive liability. You can mask that liability against a team like Blackburn, but not against a viable top-6 team.

Santos is an attack-minded wingback, good at cutting inside to the corner of the 18-yard box and shooting or looking for the final ball. He's not who you want defending against a Gareth Bale type, that's for sure. Trouble was (aside from poor defending and passing), he only had marginal speed to overlap, and he lacked make-up speed to get back if he was beat. If a guy got behind him he might as well sit down on the pitch because he was out of the play.

He wasn't good enough regardless, but there's no way you can play a guy like him unless you have a true DM in front of your CB's, and of course Arsenal hasn't had that for some time, including in Song who would always get too far forward.

Comcast OnDemand has HD replays of all the games, broken down by half. I missed everything today, including Swansea getting obliterated. How was the coverage overall?
