In Mignolet's defense... giving up only one goal on the shots he's faced is a pretty decent day.  Just picked the wrong one to let in.

That goal was sick.  Barça fully deserve their liga title this year.  Aside from looking unstoppable at times, they've come back in wins against both Atlético and Sevilla.  I think that's 4 come back wins this year, but the Barça boys can correct me if I'm wrong.  No lead is safe against them, that's for sure.

Those bastards don't even need Arda, just as I predicted.  He's going to ride the pine until Iniesta moves on, or Neymar stops wanting to play second fiddle to Messi.

 
BTW, there are plenty of Madridistas that want Mou back.  The issue with them obviously isn't the coach, it's the management of the organization.  No cohesive strategy on the pich or off of it.  They are the anti-Atlético right now in so many ways.  It was great to see (if only on DVR for me) once again a team outplaying a colleciton of talent.  I can't help but think that theloss in the CL final was the real fluke here, as Real got extremely lucky to get the Ramos header goal so late in that game.  Coupled with Juanfran rolling his ankle almost immediately thereafter... Gah, that one still galls, even if it is tempered with the knowledge that Atleti has been and still is the better team in Madrid.

This season is already a success for Atlético.  Now, it's time to get some icing on that cake in CL play.  Unlike a lot of the EPL, Alético may use their league games to try out some new tactics that allow them better opportunities to score goals against teams that will cede the center of the pitch.  That's been a major struggle this year, as it has under Simeone.  Can't fault 11 goals allowed in 26 games though, playing RM and FCB twice each already.

When I first started following soccer, I thought these were throw away games/tournaments.

I never realized how much they meant to Englanders or European Soccer fans in general.

FourFourTwo, the football magazine published by Haymarket, has launched a US web site as part of the brand's global expansion.

The site has kicked off with a digital preview for the new Major League Soccer season, the equivalent of the Premier League in North America, which starts on Sunday, 6 March.

FourFourTwo will also put staff on the ground to cover football on both the west and east coasts of the US, led by Jeff Kassouf, the US editor, who has joined from broadcaster NBC.

It comes after local sites have been made live in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Last year FourFourTwo grew its global digital audience by 157 per cent, helped by a 500 per cent surge in southeast Asia.

The MLS will be a new addition to the FourFourTwo’s Stats Zone smartphone app for the 2016 season, which is also integrated into the website.

David Hall, the global editor-in-chief of FourFourTwo, said: "I couldn’t be more excited about FourFourTwo going live in the US. 

"Soccer in the US is stood at a tipping point about to take the leap. We’re here to do everything we can to make the game we love as big as possible in America."

From what I can tell, they are throw-away tournaments early on, just because fixture congestion is so brutal.

But by the time you reach the finals, they are absolutely huge.  That was the biggest game of the season for Liverpool and the mood among fans is quite low right now.

Think of it this way.  Nobody on the Man City board said, "We can't hire Pep now, we might unsettle the team for the huge League Cup final!"  Next year, nobody will remember that City won the League Cup.  Just like nobody is going to give Wenger a break if Arsenal complete their collapse in the league but threepeat the FA Cup.  If you support Villa, or Wigan, or Swansea, yeah a Wembley final is a big deal.  If you choose to support a team with a history like Liverpool, then we're all going to laugh at you for getting too up or down about the JV cup competition.  You have Rafa in Instanbul.  Nobody was going to remember Jurgen at Wembley.

 
I think the League Cup is along the lines of The President's Cup in the NHL or the Supporters Shield in MLS -- it's a trophy, but not one most people care about very much after you crash out of the playoffs.  Goes much better as an accessory to the serious hardware.

 
Looks like Conte will be the next Chelsea manager.  That portends well for my Atleti and keeping el Cholo on the correct sideline.  Losing him would be worse than losing Griezmann IMO.

 
What a weekend of games.  Love LVG diving on the sideline.  Seriously, the mere fact he was out of his chair and in the technical area is something he needed to do more.  The dive was fantastic.

The kids at United are playing with no fear.  Something it seems like the old guard was afraid to do.  Let em ride.  If they can finish strong, sell Rooney to China, pay someone to take  :fro: , strengthen the central D and go at them next season. 13 debuts this season by LVG.  Most because of the injuries and some have even turned out pretty well.  The last few games have been fun to watch. "LET THEM PLAY! LET THEM PLAY!"

 
That Arsenal game... Ugh. Walcott invisible. Sanchez never got going. Iwobi is one of the worse players I have ever seen. That should have been Campbell coming in.

At least you get something for the Supporters Shield and the League Cup which gives them a little added weight.

Winning the MLS Supporters Shield gets you a ticket to the Champions League

Winning the League Cup gets you into Europa League Qualifying

Greizman looked really good against RM. I haven't gotten to see much of him- I know AM are used to losing key guys... but that would have to hurt (again).

He is really good.  Really really good, and the only truly proven attacking talent on the squad.  I have a love for small, quick forwards that can finish with either foot.  They put so much pressure on a defense to not miss-hit a pass or take a heavy touch.  Plus the ability to run the channels is fantastic if you have wing support.

The issue with Atlético is that they have no true #9 that is effective in tying up the central defenders and finishing off attacking moves off a short, quick pass in the box, or a deflection.  They were much more successful with Costa and Villa in this way.  More dangerous against teams willing to concede the center of the park.  That's what Jackson Martinez was supposed to be, but he wasn't scoring.  I can't fault the team for selling him at a profit though.

The other issue with this Atlético squad is pretty easy... They play against the best attacking team that I've ever seen.  Messi + Suárez + Neymar is ####### ridiculous.  Shut one down and you have two others that can score from anywhere and make a goal out of nothing.  You can have perfect tactics and execution and still lose by two goals.  Having a #9 scoring threat and midfielders that can help to pin back Alba and Álves, or at least take advantage of them when they inevitably get out of position is useful.  Finally, Barça will concede on set pieces and getting Pique or Masch into card trouble early helps too.  But really, there's not much a team can do to neutralize the MSN trident.  Just limit their looks and hope that they don't pull off the (inevitable) crazy goal.

So my 6 year old girl tells me the other day that she wants to play in the women's world cup. She asks me how old you have to be to play?  I tell her probably around 18 but you have to work very hard to get better and practice and learn the game.  Shes played 1 season of AYSO (Under 5 or 6) and is starting Under 7 spring.  Then she asks me what do I have to learn (Said with such attitude like shes an excellent player already and knows it all).  I tell her, "well, how to shoot on a goal with a keeper in the way, positions, passing, spacing, keeping the ball closer and not dribbling out of the field....."  She gave me the ok like no problem.  Games start Saturday!

 
West Ham announce signing of young striker Sam Ford

West Ham have confirmed the signing of young striker Sam Ford until 2017.

The Hammers announced the recruitment of the former Ipswich Town forward on their official website on Tuesday, and revealed Ford has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the option of extending it further.

Speaking about his move to the east London outift, Ford admitted the chance to potentially play at West Ham's new stadium in the Olympic Park next season was a motivating factor for him to join the club.

He told West Ham's official website: "I’m delighted to have signed for West Ham. It’s a huge club and a big step up.

"West Ham is a massive club. It is a very exciting time with the new stadium, everyone is talking about West Ham, it is definitely something to look forward to and hopefully I’ll be involved playing there one day.

"It’s been a dream of mine to be a professional footballer for as long as I can remember so hopefully I can keep on improving, keep working hard and we’ll see where that gets me."

Ford has already opened up his goalscoring account for his new team after netting early on in West Ham's Development Squad draw with Wolves in late February.

Chelsea sitting 8 is a bit misleading as several teams below them have a game and LFC has 2. A Europa position still seems a long-shot, but Chelsea will likely have an interesting role with the top and bottom of the table - last five games are: v Man City, at Bournemouth, v Spurs, at Sunderland, and finishing against Leicester City at the Bridge.

I wonder if Chelsea want a Europa spot, or would they rather regroup - like Man United a couple of years ago, without the extra games.
