Its always seemed somewhat odd that we have 40+ member countries and CONMEBAL only has 10. At least the US could reasonably hope to regularly qualify for a merged Copa, but for several CONCACAF teams this would mean going from being an underdog participant in the Gold Cup to watching the Copa on TV every 4 years.
yes, this is a significant downside.

And that downside is doubled since the Gold Cup happens every 2 years while the Copa will happen every 4.

I don't think the US or Mexico will ever have to qualify.  I assume the US is only going to agree to host this every 4 years if US and Mexico are certain to be in it.

Financially the tournament won't work with out Mexico, US, Brazil and Argentina, assuming they want to stay away from double headers again like they did this time.

While the competition will be higher for the one tournament, this merge also gives the US less competitive games during a cycle.

cycle the odd year to include the GC, so the US gets a cup every 2 years, plus the WC? too much? cups runneth over?

This seems like a risky signing for Atlanta.  Headcases don't tend to shed their ways too often.

==============================

Former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner could become MLS expansion side Atlanta United FC’s first major signing, according to Univision.

The 28-year-old Dane is currently a free agent after being released by Wolfsburg over a year early in late April following a troubled season, and Atlanta technical director Carlos Bocanegra is reported to have since made contact with his representatives about a potential move to the USA.

Bendtner originally joined Wolfsburg in August 2014 on a three-year deal after his contract at Arsenal expired but failed to leave his noted off-field problems behind him during his two seasons with the Bundesliga side.

The Denmark international was banned from the team's training ground a few weeks before his release for allegedly disrupting the dressing room harmony and was even labelled “a menace” by sporting director Klaus Allofs.

Anyone remember the WC 2010 pool? I barely do, yay drinking, but apparently leaguesafe does. I just got an email, 6 years after the fact, that we still have $20 in that account.

my my guess is that we had someone pay late or I messed up. I'd like to make the payment to the 4th spot in the pool. Anyone know who that was? I could always dig through old emails I suppose, but that seems tedious...

Send it to the Uruguay FA guy as a bribe

Seems like a lateral move for Koeman.  Everton has money but so does the rest of the league.   They were a 70 point club a couple of years ago but they've been sliding since.  Their young players like Stones, Lukaku and Barkley have been inconsistent and are repeatedly rumored to have one foot out the door.  The defense has to be rebuilt with Howard gone and Baines, Jagielka and Barry on the wrong side of 30.   I don't know about Everton's academy but it's hard to argue with Southampton's track record in this regard.

Koeman's reputation will give him some leash to work with but Leicester's success has chairmen and fans dreaming of silverware.

yeah- seemed a bit odd to me.  but didn't I read that Everton had new ownership or something- or that they were opening the purse-strings far more than Saints?

Guardian is reporting that Koeman's salary at Everton will be six million pounds. Saints probably can't pay that and certainly won't have the transfer budget to match either.

Next up: Frank de Boer (Ajax) or Eddie Howe.

I say send it to the winner. I'll pm you my address.

Seriously though, keep it. You've put a lot of work in to multiple pools around here. You deserve to pocket the $20 you found on the floor here.

Hey gb I didn't play in it but I feel like you shorted me when you bought me food and drinks in Houston so feel free to send it me.

jk> send it to Shady's kid

great idea
who?

might be a moot point anyway... it says on the site it can't be moved until July 12th 2010  :loco:

can't assign it to someone, can't pull it out myself, can't send it to anything... but they did inform me they are going to extract a "holding fee" of $3 per month, until the account is empty... nice racket.

Thanks, Eephus...that was a fascinating & educating read...for me, at least.  I was very surprised  that he was the first black African to coach in the WC KO stages.  The Africa Cup of Nations is one of my favorite tournaments to follow, probably because I'm such an ignoramus when it comes to African politics/soccer, & AFCON always serves as the format for me to learn more.  This fellow seems to be an African footballing icon, & I never really heard of him...and that's on me. One of the most enjoyable WC games I ever watched was Nigeria vs Batistuta's ARG...can't remember what year, not sure if he was the CB then.

Mike Piazza has bought Reggiana, an  Italian Lega Pro side.  Pretty cool.

Well, of course Steve Nash is a part owner of the Whitecaps.  But he's a Canadian sports figure.  LeBron is a minority owner with FSG and Liverpool.  Magic Johnson, Nomar Garciaparra, and MIa Hamm are part of the LAFC ownership group.

Apparently, his father was a Palermo fan, but he couldn't swing that (probably because of Zamperini, their infamous owner who implemented  9 coaching changes, just this year) & last year tried to purchase venerable Parma, but the accounts were just too shambolic.

Mike Piazza? The baseball player? I understand he has baseball player money. But that was over a decade ago baseball money. HTH does he have enough spare change to buy an Italian soccer team?
