If I wasn't also an Arsenal fan I'd want to get Sánchez back and grab Bellerin as well.
Yeah.  If the market is crazy on all the young folks then grabbing Sanchez back could be a very good move.

Not worried about RB with Vidal back and Semedo signed.

Champions League play-in draw.  Don't know much about most of these clubs, but my off-the-cuff reaction is it seems several of the stronger teams drew each other.

Champions Route

Olympiakos vs Rijeka

Celtic vs Astana

Hapoel Be'er Sheva vs Maribor

League Route

Istanbul Basaksehir vs Sevilla

Take it to the La Liga thread...

I only posted the EPL teams...In that draw it was:  Monaco-Atletico-Roma-NK Maribor
I'd take that draw.  Spurs, Napoli, Pool, and Roma are the toughest outs in Pot 3 (in that order).  Pot 4 is mostly junk with Sporting and Red Bull being the best IMO.  Lots of really good teams in pot 2 (which is typical).  Bottom half of Pot 1 is mediocre.

Yeah - I am not a fan of how they set the draw up.  I think the Pots are fine, but teams in pots 2-4 are (too) limited in where they can go.  For instance, if Chelsea are in Group A - then then next EPL club (City or United) would have to be in Groups E-H.  I assume the first knock-out stage would pit teams from Groups A-D against each other.  I think the only criteria should be to not have teams from the same federation in the same group.  No reason to avoid Spain v. Spain or England v England in the knockout stages.

Looks like Gylfi to Everton is done for 48M.
That's crazy money for a soon-to-be 28 year old.

Everton won't be able to recoup much of that through sell-on of Sigurdsson or by selling Barkley (or by qualifying for Champions League for that matter).

Lallllllllana out "several months" according to LFC.  If they lose Phil now, then they absolutely will need another AM.
That's horrible. Even without that injury, Pool was about 3,000 minutes short in attacking MF, now they will be 4,500 short if he's not back until December. They are going to need 2 now.

Deadspin is well prepared.

They picked today, the day after MLS announces the mind blowing financial deal with Adidas, to make the claim MLS is a ponzi scheme that does not generate any revenue.

The guy also writes:

It’s a bit of a strange course for a sports league that isn’t exactly lighting it up in terms of attendance, viewership, or revenue.
There's a good article to be written about why people keep investing in a league that is struggling in television viewers and revenue (at the bottom of the league).  But it's hard to argue that attendance isn't a strength.

From what I saw on Reddit, this same author and "sources" have written other similar toned pieces on MLS in the past.  He has claimed that the stands are only full because they are largely free tickets.

While all sports have give aways, it is kind of hard to take any one too seriously who makes that claim.

Yeah, I don't think Atlanta is giving away 45K tickets.  DC United is getting 17K and I'm not sure they could pay ME to see them right now.

I just read that article.  It's like the author had an axe to grind.  I mean, comparing the MLS to the Belgium league...Look, no offense to belgium but no matter what their league does, it's still Belgium... a tiny country.  There's only so much upside there.

The US does have one thing going for it...it's the richest nation on earth.

Tough injury for sure.  It's hard to say exactly where Lallana was going to fit into the day 1 XI or if he would, but that's hardly relevant.  He was going to be among the leaders for the team in minutes for the first 2-3 months and now he's not.  Good news is that the reputable sources and Klopp say it's 2-3 months, not the 4 that are listed.  I wish clubs were more forthcoming with the exact nature of the injury..

I think Klopp has to be quite clever now with his lineups.  Sturridge/Origi/Solanke will need to get some starts.  Firmino, although Klopp loves him at the 9, can move out wide and spell Salah/Mane who can't play twice a week for 3 months.  Wijnaldum just saw his minutes soar.  Emre Can and Jordan Henderson may now find themselves on the field a good bit together with Coutinho in front..kind of a Tottenham style (2 DM's).

I don't see Liverpool signing TWO guys...but they definitely need to sign one.  The problem is, there have only been 4-5 reliable links the entire summer.  Naby Keita, who would slot next to Coutinho in front of Can/Hendo and eat up minutes, and Ox, who is versatile and could fill in anywhere.  Unfortunately I just don't see how Liverpool sign either of those two guys.  Maybe if anything the Lallana injury forces the team into further action.

They can use the Coutinho money to go after Keita.

I could be insane, but I honestly don't think he's leaving.  Liverpool gave Man City a really hard time when they sold Sterling and he had to almost fight his way out to finally go.  Hard for me to believe they are just going to allow Coutinho to leave, especially when he's so crucial for the team and appears to be very happy.

Also, if Barca get Dembele, where does Coutinho play?  Does he replace Iniesta?  Hard to imagine.  Even harder to imagine him being content to be on the bench.  I've read rumors that Neymar texts him nonstop to get him to come to PSG.  So for me, I think he's going to enjoy one more season playing for LIverpool then there will be a bit of a battle between PSG/Barca/LFC for his future services.

Just be thankful it wasn't Arsene and the Arsenal medical staff - he would have had his leg amputated shortly after the press release about him being out 3-4 months.

If they are then I'm even dumber than Gator looks.
Sometimes I think being stuck in Rev land makes me assume everything is worlds better else where.  When you go to an Atlanta game do you get the sense of a ponzi scheme or do you see people spending real money?

This is a timely tweet.  When you give away so many tickets, your first thought should always be expansion of seating :)

I may soon look really naive with this post

Shader, the market is so out of whack it appears to have gone well past bubble point.  As such I don't think any one can make any good guesses so don't feel bad if wrong.

Players that would rightly be untouchable in a regular market are all going to suddenly be available if the money continues at this insane level.

That's ok, it was cute.

The reality is Barca and RM are the top of the heap - United will lose De Gea to RM just like they lost CR.  Honestly if I were you I would hope they pay something insane for him and use it to buy 2-3 players.

I think people are spending real money.  Everybody is wearing gear - there's probably 15-20% of the people wearing what I assume are the $100 team shirt.  Part of that is because it's new but soccer is really big in the area and there's a ton of disposable income in the suburbs.  The other thing that helps is the games are almost always on the weekend - people are fine commuting downtown on the weekends when traffic isn't horrendous but most of the folks in the burbs would rather not have to make that trip during the week - which is exactly what they had to do in prior years for the Braves.  They moved outside the perimeter to Cobb County for that reason.  United and the Falcons can depend on folks only having to make the trip once every two weeks.

Yes -- and I like Lallana
Man, I love CP like the rest of you and I'm not saying you are wrong about Lllllllalana but I think we are vastly overrating him right now.  I've heard top 30 or 50 world wide thrown around.  To be honest I think that's way premature.  I could rattle off 30 guys pretty easy that I think just about everybody would have to acknowledge is better than him.  The top 5-8 teams in the world probably have 5 players each that are better than him.  He may not be top 100.

I think it's easy to overlook Lallana in that some of the stuff he does isn't flashy -- he's especially good at initiating the press with great timing and seeing the play ahead of time.  But Pulisic is in the middle of an awful lot of goals and even though that's the more easier and more "obvious" thing to see it counts for more IMO.

I'm on board with CP > Llama but I'm more addressing CP's place in world football right now.  I love him but we are overrating him.

For the second year in a row, one of our local clubs (Bavarians) are hosting the USASA National Amateur Cup Final Four.  Christos FC beat Bavarians to win the cup in Milwaukee last year in an amazing overtime final. Despite their success in another tournament this season as detailed in this thread, Christos was ousted early in the Amateur Cup this year.

I can't make it tonight, but will go to the final tomorrow.  Games tonight:

LA Wolves vs Lansdowne Bhoys (NYC)

Kickers FC (St. Pete, FL) vs Bavarian SC

The LA Wolves are coached by Eric Wynalda.

Bummer. I still like him even with the kit with which he is defiling himself.
