I wonder who they are talking about  (cough Kraft cough)

===================

There is currently a tug-of-war, of sorts, occurring behind the scenes in MLS. Some ownership groups are ready to spend more believing the league is primed for growth, and further investment will only accelerate that growth. Other ownership groups are happy to limit their investment, either because they can operate at a profit by doing so or because their resources are more limited than some of the billionaire ownership groups that have come into MLS in recent expansion.

Before, there was an old guard that controlled much of the decision making. Multiple sources indicate that is starting to change. There isn’t one group that holds the hammer anymore.

There was a 442 article on this a couple of weeks ago in reference to TAM money increasing (I believe the new guard wants it doubled with an extra DP slot or something like that).  I think it's almost inevitable with the Adidas money, etc. it's just a matter of how much.

out of curiousity- when's the next CBA?

2019 I believe.  I think (i.e. dont quote me on this) that the salary cap has been set through that date, but that the commissioner can increase TAM as he sees fit (which is why they are even having this discussion).

This is correct.  TAM is not collectively bargained.  It can grow or disappear any time the owners want.

It is also worth noting that the CBA salary cap wording is listed as "Shall not be less than" which means if by a miracle the owners wanted to raise the cap before the CBA was complete, they could.   But we know that will never happen.

The owners still live in fear of the lower roster guys making any real money, which is why they created TAM, to pay the top of the roster players more with out affecting the lower paid guys.

Dembele still not playing for Dortmund and Barcelona is reportedly offering 130mm Euros (with it being rejected).  Such a weird window.

how was the bid structured though?

the laughable Barca bid for Coutinho was 80 million over 5 years, and 36 million or so in ridiculous addons, like Phil winning the Spanish x-factor, scoring 200 goals in a season and stuff like that. This from a club that just got a BIG chunk of money in cash from Neymar

I don't really fall into the camp if thinking Barcelona should significantly overpay for players just because they got a big fee for Neymar.

Sure, but they will struggle to do business this late in the window if they can't structure decent bids for clubs.

That's fine, I'm completely good with giving some of the youth a chance.

Exaggeration of the add-ons aside, I'm not sure Coutinho is worth being the 2nd most expensive transfer ever.  Same for Dembele, but he is younger in a position of more need...so that is easier to see.

I'm surely in the minority on both points.

Of course, if failing to land either of those means these stupid Di Maria rumours come to pass, I say just pony up regardless.  That would just be stupid.

I am interested to see what type of crowd NYC draws in Connecticut as one of their home games has been moved to Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.  They don't have much time to promote this game though.

another field I hate. but at least it's not as bad as yankee stadium. I have a feeling it's going to look pretty empty out there.

what happened? why the move?

Yankees had a rainout rescheduled for Monday 9/25 and I guess they need more than 44 hours to change the field back to a baseball field.  Frankly, it's a joke and I hope they're embarrassed since they've known about this since May 25th when they did the reschedule.

shameful that that's the reason.

has there been any movement on an actual stadium or new location? (long term)

I agree with the bolded 100%. If Barca had followed the original plan and tried to sign him after the next WC, I think he would be ready to take a step up with them. Now? I don't think so.

ETA: I think he could be considered a long term replacement for Iniesta, not for Neymar.

you're funny today (i.e. NO)
even though I guess I officially cast my support to RBs over NYC, I can't say it's too binding for me. so the comment really wasn't meant to be a barb- if that's how it came across.

I still like watching NYC and wanting them to succeed. this stadium nonsense is just a mess- wish it would get resolved sooner than later. even DC is getting a stadium. I thought Willets Point was in the works. Would've been cool to have it on one of the piers on the Hudson (I think they were talking about Pier 40, but ran into structural and environmental issues?) or just about anywhere in Manhattan... including Washington Heights somehow (MTA Subway lot up there could be covered over, sim to hudson yards... at a guess). There's a stretch on the East River below me that has warehouses and parking right on the river (base of Clinton St) that every time I jog or bike by I eyeball to guess if a stadium would fit.

Iniesta is about done, sadly, and I am not sure there will be that type of role going forward.

Barcelona has a huge need in the midfield right now.  They have been outplayed in the midfield by top opposition many games over the past couple of years. Cannot retain possession and weak at pressing to win it back. Rakitic and Busquets have been poor recently, not sure why.  I think the system has to be either a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 (false 9) depending on Suarez's health/form.  Players like Paulinho and Seri (at least in theory) are the type that address those flaws directly.  In both systems, Coutinho is an imperfect fit because he is best at the spaces that Messi will occupy.

I don't think any of those are really feasible today with Di Blasio in office.  There's also the issue of the Yankees owning 20% which presumably takes Willets Point out of the running.  I think ultimately they (and the Yankees) will end up around Yankee stadium either where the ball fields are now (and relocating the fields in the 153-7 block or the other way around.

I think Pier 40 is out.

Like I said, I think any of this is a pipedream until Di Blasio is gone.

hard to think he'll survive the next election... although there doesn't appear to be anybody in line yet to oppose him.

given the building boom blowing up the city top to bottom, a real shame they couldn't get something done when all of these huge projects were getting green-lighted by the city.

Like I said I think the want that Bronx site since it would allow them and the Yankees to redevelop the whole area them$elve$, but De Blasio put the kibbosh on it for the time being.   The trend in these MLS stadiums has been redeveloping an entire area and that site is the only one that seems to have the same type of opportunity.

I do agree that it would have been incredible if some smart people had been locked in a room and figured out a creative solution at Pier 40, but it doesn't sound like Hudson River Parks wants anything really done there.

Napoli looking good again.  Hopefully this is the year they knock of Juve...
                   Milik/Dres Mertens

Insigne                                    Callejon

                           Hamsik

That is sick.

Agree with all of this.

The Atlanta Orlando rivalry seems to be growing quickly.  Today Atlanta announced they are banning Orlando supporters for the next 4 home games against Orlando due I think to some damage done to Bobby Dodd bleachers by Orlando fans.

Wayne Rooney has retired from international football.  England's all time leading scorer.  Odd timing but probably the correct move.

I could watch that roberto carlos free kick forever. the bend he gets on it plus the power- an all-timer.  wish they showed the ball more clearly there. had never noticed the frenchmen? put up a 4 man wall... for a free kick from about 40 yards.
His run up to that shot cracks me up every time. As if to tell the other team: "I'm going to punish this ball and you right now."

I can't wait for  Real Madrid, PSG, Liverpool, Leipzig and the Donetsk, Porto, Basel, Qarabag groups :oldunsure:

One of Tottenham or Liverpool

Nor can I wait for the Bayern Munich/Real Madrid, Barcelona/Man City, Roma, Celtic group of death.  For like, the fourth year running.  God hates Rona.

1997 Confederations Cup?
Close, a very good guess. It was the Tournoi de France, a warm up for the '98 world cup, so very similar to what is now the Confed Cup.

France, England, Italy and Brazil, and they all brought their A-teams.  England won the single round-robin tournament. I believe its the last time the 3 Lions have won silverware.

I only know this because I saw a great article about this obscure tournament a few months ago. I think it was in 8 by 8 or maybe the Blizzard - can't find it now.

I still have a Denilson jersey.  That tournament was the highlight of his disappointing career.

don't forget to lump Arsenal in there with BM. TIA>
I swear Roma & Arsenal are sister/twinned clubs...with all the injuries & drama, flair & follies, maladies & misfortune, etc...they're their very own "group of death"

*although the Gunners have the slightest bit more trophies
