There are a handful of teams around the world with the name Inter/Internationale.  Maybe they just thought it was something like "United" and not get in trouble...

The franchise appears to be cursed, they can not move forward on anything they do.

Looks to me like it's kind of the other way around. Inter Milan is seeking a trademark for the name "Inter" and MLS is opposing it because the name "Inter" has widespread use throughout soccer so no team has the right to trademark it.

Not sure how real this is but a story is going around involving the Chicago Fire.  Here is a rough outline

* They are going to buy out of their lease in Bridgeview

* They will move back to Chicago and play at Soldier Field (again)

* They will rebrand as Chicago City FC

* Joe Mansueto(founder of Morningstar) is reportedly supplying almost all of the cash to do this.  Last year he purchased 49% of the Fire

* No word yet on whether he will buy out Hauptman (who is out of his depth financially) to take full control of the team

Yeah that's why I think a front office type will go. The Inter Miami name had been rumored but they dragged their feet for so long. You think if they had trademarked/copyrighted InterMiami first this whole thing could have been avoided.

Technically, it's at the league level not the club level.

The oppostition says that Inter Milan filed its application to register "Inter" the day after MLS filed its application to register "Club International de Football Miami MMXX," and that MLS intends to apply to register "Miami Inter," "Miami Inter FC," and "FC Miami Inter." But not "Inter."

I'm not an IP guy. But I do know that even unregistered trademarks are considered by the USPTO in deciding whether to grant an application because common law protects trademarks that have been used in commerce but not registered. Obviously, Inter Milan would have a much better claim than Miami to "Inter" because of their history. But the same issue would arise in any fight between them given the fact that so many clubs have used "Inter."

That's not quite correct.  Milan filed the "INTER" application in 2014.  The application was published in the Offical Gazette one day after the Inter Miami application.  I don't think application priority will really matter, however.  

 
When my son played in a local league at U8, all the teams were named after Euro powerhouse clubs.  His team was named "Inter Milan."  All the parents called his team "Milan" - drove me ####in crazy, but try to explain it to any of them and my wife is rolling her eyes, I'm getting blank stares or worse, and sure enough, I'm the ###hole. What else is new.

I'd probably call them "Mulan" because I take pride in being the #######.

the name is the very last thing wrong with the team.   

But unfortunately non soccer people look at the KC rebrand and say "look at how good that worked" with out acknowledging that the name change was #100 on the list of impactful changes they made in the team.

My son's 8u team is named "Blue".

 
“Coming Spring 2021” sign went up at McKalla place in Austin today. I think we may be ahead of Miami at this point.

I attended a season ticket holders forum held by the club president last night.  The Stadium sale is nearly a done deal.  The Battery will finish this season in the current stadium.  They say they don't have a definite location for next season, but the rumors, and he would not confirm or deny, are Johnson Hagood or Stoney Field.

Johnson Hagood Stadium is where The Citadel plays its football games.  Stoney Field is a high school field directly across the street from Johnson Hagood.  Stoney is where the club played the first six years of its existence.  Per this meeting the USL is "encouraging" teams to locate closer to their fan base, and for some reason these people think this is downtown Charleston.  It is not.

It was not a particularly happy fan base that attended and asked questions.

Jorginho is fully aware that he's leaving his position, in fact he signals the empty space so another team mate covers it, but then number 8 and him don't feel like running and it's a clear line for City.

This midfield does not understand how to press together, and frequently get skipped completely by a single pass (or two) as happened in the short clip.  But I don't blame it on Jorginho. He may be at fault in some cases, but it is a combination of factors. 

 
more news on the Chicago situation.   The big hope is that Mansueto will take control of the club financially and push it into the 21th century.

The news about the lobbyist seems to indicate they don't intend Soldier Field to be a long term solution

One source indicated that Chicago billionaire and Fire minority owner Joe Mansueto has played an important role in these negotiations. Fire majority owner Andrew Hauptman sold a 49 percent ownership stake to Mansueto for an undisclosed amount in 2018. Mansueto, who bought the historic Wrigley Building in downtown Chicago for $255 million last year, has significant pull in real estate dealings in the City of Chicago.

Public records show the Fire have been active in dealings with the city of Chicago in recent months. Public lobbyist data shows that, “Chicago Fire Soccer Holdings, LLC” paid three lobbyists from the firm Fletcher, O’Brien, Kasper & Nottage a total of $72,000 for a period between Oct. 1, 2018 and Dec. 31, 2018. The lobbyists filings show the team sought administrative action from the mayor’s office regarding “real estate matters.”

I still don't get not having Kante- for my money the best DCM in the world- not playing in that position. 

considering the talent on that roster, it feels like a bunch of square pegs in round holes to suit the tactics, instead of sarri rejiggering his tactics to better suit all of that talent.

14 year old Joao Mendes showed up to try out for Brasilian club Cruzeiro.

After the try out, the team was very impressed and offered him a contract to join the club.

He signed and then after he completed his signature he said "by the way, my dad is Ronaldinho"

Was looking at 538's SPI to see how those odds stacked up with oddsmakers (generally in line) and pulled some data:

     Median SPI    70.28+    <70.28
La Liga     74.70     14     6
EPL     70.05     10     10
Serie A     65.80     7     13
Bundesliga 64.45     6     12


Fun facts:

  • 70.28 was the median team strength for all 78 teams in the four leagues.
  • If SPI is correct, the worst team in Spain, Levante, would be a mid-table team in both Germany and Italy, and 53rd of 78 in a single table.
  • In a combined table of all 78 teams, only six La Liga teams would be in the bottom half (all between 38 and 53).  Only six of the Bundesliga's teams and seven from Serie A would be in the top half.
  • ~80 is a fairly clear demarcation line for top teams;  England has six of them, Spain has five, Germany and Italy have three.
  • The best team in MLS, LAFC, has a 51.2 rating -- right in line with the worst/relegated teams from England, Germany and Italy (but not Spain), and also with mid-table teams in the Championship.
  • Interestingly, the median MLS team is both considerably worse than the median English Championship team and considerably better than the median English League One team.  But the range is from mid-table Championship to bottom of League One.

Manchester United sent two scouts to DC to watch Acosta play.  Ironically, I bet they came away trying to find out more about Diego Rossi who ran rampant that game for LAFC.

Not surprising to see La Liga so high in this right now.  Barcelona may have a wide lead on the title, but the mid table has been a dogfight all year.  The fight for the last CL spot is going down to the wire with at least 4 teams in the mix.  Also interesting that Levante is the worst team but 15th right now.
