New York City FC Historic Home Opener makes MLS retail historyNew York City FC celebrated its first ever win in Major League Soccer (MLS) Sunday evening, defeating the New England Revolution 2-0 in their first home game at Yankee Stadium. They also made history off the field, as they posted the highest game day merchandise sales in MLS’ twenty year history.

The 43,507 crowd mobbed the Stadium’s 14 retail outlets from the moment the gates opened two hours before the game, until 90 minutes after the action had finished. The most popular item was a soccer fan favorite – the scarf. With eight different designs on sale, by the time the final whistle was blown, every single one of the 4,000 scarves in the stadium had sold out. Other favorites were replica jerseys, tees and beanie hats.

Tom Glick, President of New York City FC, said:

“Our historic home opener was a very special day for our Club. We were overwhelmed by the huge and vocal crowd who made Yankee Stadium their own. The demand for New York City FC merchandise at the game, shows the appetite for the Club and how eager our fans are to get behind their team. They weren’t just there to witness an extraordinary spectacle in the history of New York sports; they were buying into their team and showing their support.”

Dan Smith, President, Legends Hospitality, said:
“We have never witnessed demand like this at a soccer game. This is a great start to our partnership with New York City FC - we are looking forward to serving their fans at Yankee Stadium for the whole MLS season.”

So, can we put to rest the idea that the EPL is the best league in the world now? They have really sucked in CL play for a while now.

Please list the reasons why it's the "best" league in the world.

Because EPL fans don't go over the top powerdouche every time something happens in the CL like certain La Liga and Bundesliga homers do?

Nope, they just stay in that mode the rest of the year until those teams are exposed.

I like the depth of the EPL. Big TV rights + shared revenue = great, competitive league. I couldn't care less if Barca is better than City.

Nice result by Montreal tonight. 2-0 at home puts them in a decent spot for the away leg.

===============================

Oh and for US Nats fans, I have no idea what rock this kid crawled out from under but Cameron Porter is a player. He is the kid that scored the wonderful late goal to put Montreal through to the semi finals after having 9 minutes of pro experience.

He got the start tonight and was beyond a handful. He appears to have more moxie and confidence than you would think a kid with almost no pedigree and a late draft pick would have. He is big and strong, with two really good feet and he is 21. I can't wait to see if this is a fluke or the start of something lasting.

We've got our very own Harry Kane!?

"He's one of our own!"

@BrianStraus: Cameron Porter doesn't look much like a guy picked 45th in the draft who had 33 minutes of pro experience at kickoff. Fearless, inventive.

@Jrodius: So tomorrow who is writing the "Porter proves college soccer is still necessary" piece?

@JohnMolinaro: Impact rookie Cameron Porter looks to be a bit of a player. Been very good tonight. #IMFC

@davisjsn: Everyone is in love with Cameron Porter right now, right?

@ThatDamnYank: Love Cameron Porter's game.

@BrianSciaretta: Cameron Porter is looking like the steal of the MLS draft. He is raising his level in #CCL. I would love to see him with the US U-23s.

@KevinKCBS3: I love what Cameron Porter is doing, taking on defenders and basically just "trying s@#!", as Ben Olsen would say

@andrew_wiebe: Cameron Porter on the dribble? Cameron Porter on the dribble.

Good in hold up and pressure, too.

@JozyAltidore: Porter ??

Premier League will be in danger of losing its 4th CL spot in 2-3 years if its recent struggles continue.

Serie A has Juventus in the CL plus 5 teams left in Europa and could put up a big coefficient this year. It's a rolling 5-year average and Italy had a rough 2010-11 and 11-12, but when those years disappear it could get interesting.

I'm not sure that La Liga is tougher than the EPL, 1-20. I know it's better 1-3, but 1-20, who knows. The EPL has a ####-ton of money, La Liga (and the Bundesliga) have advantages in terms of homegrown talent.

Prediction: England loses its 4th CL spot for one year only. Spurs finish 4th that year.

It's ok to like PL the most even if it's not the best, isn't it? :kicksrock: After all, some people like ACC football most of all.
Sure, you like what you like. Just don't pretend it is the best.
I have still not found anyone in this thread or the previous thread who has ever claimed that the BPL is the best league. Z is my buddy, but I have no idea who he's talking about.
I have a number of friends that I chat with over whatsapp (including my brother) that are huge EPL homers. They never watch any other leagues, but will watch west brom vs. Hull. They annoy the #### out of me, and really I was just looking for more ammunition against them.

I usually catch games from France, Spain and/or Italy every weekend and recognize and enjoy the high quality of play in all of them. But PL is the most entertaining because, well, that is where Southampton's enemies play.

I heard that this morning. For this year Italy is currently 2nd in coefficient with all of the Europa spots and Juventus.

If the PL struggles continue and the league falls all the way to fourth sometime in the future, will it get a fourth Europa berth?

One could make the argument that La Liga is somewhat squandering the advantage it has in hordes of homegrown talent by not negotiating more equitable revenue sharing and making the league more competitive. It's not just the fact that the same teams dominate the top of the standings -- that pretty much happens in all of the Big Six -- but it's that there are so many uncompetitive games. I read somewhere a while back that PL has the lowest percentage of 3- and 4-game victory margins of all the major Euro leagues. Cutting down on those might help La Liga gain on PL in international popularity, because there is certainly some great footy being played there.

I watch Hull/WBA and don't watch Elche versus Eibar. But that has nothing to do with my perceived quality of the leagues. It has to do with the quality of the coverage and my own cultural connection to the league.

I think dynasties help leagues. I don't think Barca and Reals dominance hurts (and I give Atletico full credit for forcing its way into that conversation).

If anything, the EPL is hurt right now because their most established brand, Man U, is down.

I have no doubt there is much accuracy in this opinion but I will never understand the thinking of the general public to whom it applies. The consternation of so many when United (not Sheffield, not S####horpe) is down fills my heart with joyous song.

I also think the EPL hurts itself by spending so much on British Isle players. Yeah they have a huge monetary advantage, but a bunch of teams don't fully use it.

Spain (S American and Portugal), Germany (Eastern Europe), Italy (both S America and E Europe) just seem to cast a larger net in scouting players than EPL teams. It's sort of comical the lack of real international players at some of the mid to lower level EPL teams.

A chief pleasure of watching sports is witnessing greatness. It's whyvit was a bit of a bummer that Messi couldn't get Argentina over the line.

The EPL has more imported players than any other league outside of Cyprus.

Everybody likes watching great players. But I'd like to see Messi playing against an Almeria Neymar or Ronaldo against a Sociedad Bale instead of having them all on the same team.

I've never understood the attraction of a stacked team.

Sometimes stuff happens.

Chelsea just crapped the bed against PSG. Man City is playing horrible right now in all competitions. Arsenal seems to go out in the round of 16 every year. Liverpool was a very, very poor team from Sept-Dec, when they got knocked out of the CL.

Overall for the EPL, the chelsea loss really hurts. As a Liverpool fan, it's a shame we couldn't beat Basel because I'd love to see this current team in the CL.

This is sad. They were one of my favorite teams in the early to mid 90's

Serie A club Parma declared bankrupt by Italian court

AP

PARMA, Italy -- Crisis-hit Serie A club Parma was declared bankrupt by an Italian court Thursday with estimated debts of nearly 100 million euros ($110 million).

The hearing in Parma was uncontested and lasted only 10 minutes in front of judge Pietro Rogato.

Parma's new owner and president, Giampietro Manenti, was not present following his arrest the previous day on charges of money laundering and embezzlement.

Local receivers Angelo Anedda and Alberto Guoiotto were appointed to oversee the proceedings.

''We have spoken with the staff and we will meet the squad later in the afternoon,'' said Osvaldo Riccobene, a representative of the board of auditors. ''We will try to keep the true values of the club, or rather some of their staff, the players, and we will try to keep also the property value of this club, for the same staff and for the receiver.

''We are in a unique case, there are no precedents. Sunday's match against Torino will be played.''

Parma was once known as the strongest of Italy's provincial teams and where players like Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro and Lilian Thuram became famous.

The team won three European trophies in the 1990s - two UEFA Cups and one Cup Winners' Cup - and was the Serie A runner-up in 1997.

But it is not known whether Parma will be able to finish this season. There is a plan in place with the league's governing body and the Italian football federation to fund the club for the rest of the campaign.

The other Serie A clubs voted this month to give Parma the 5 million euro ($5.5 million) emergency fund after two consecutive league matches were postponed. Players have not been paid for months and the club has been sold twice this season.

Relegation is all but certain as Parma, which has been deducted three points for failing to pay wages, is in last place, 16 points from safety.

Parma has two possible options for the future. If a new owner is found, they will have to pay off the debt - which will be calculated by Anedda and Guoiotto and could drop if agreements are made with various creditors - and Parma could start next season in Serie B.

However, if no one decides to buy Parma, the club would have to restart in the fourth division of Italian football with a new name.
