Yeah, my kid is too young for that stuff, but he's started laughing maniacally every time a goal is scored in a game I'm watching (probably because he likes to whack balls into his little mini soccer goal/basketball hoop).  The effect is particularly sinister with own goals.  He really sounds like he's delighting in others' misfortune.

 
Well, I don't know who was wearing the United crest but a 3-0 win at Shrewsbury Town was nice to see.  third goal on a counterattack which has been sorely missing in the United plan under LVG.  It was ONLY Shrewsburry but 3-0 was needed.

Fellas, I pretty much respect everyone here regarding their football opinions & knowledge, so I'm curious to see your opinions on who wins today in two fantastic CL matchups: Barca @Arsenal & Bayern @ Juventus

For me: Barca 3-Arsenal1                              Juve 2-Bayern1

IF I was a betting man, I think Juvenal might be the play today (with the proper allotment of points/spread).

Peak Arsenal would be to draw but give up two away goals or something.   I'd say that Arsenal's speed on the counter is well suited to give Barcelona trouble, but Madrid didn't give Barcelona trouble and they're faster and more lethal on the counter than Arsenal.  I have Barca 2-1.

Bayern against Juve at home looks like a 1-1 draw to me.

I really think Koscielny(sp?) is the key...from the Arsenal games I've been able to watch, I've been impressed how he manages to impose his will with such a slight frame, & he also appears to direct the defense.  I had no idea of his import, till I watched recent games (my take as a casual observer)

I think he's pretty good, too. Otoh, you know Arsenal isn't taking the game all that seriously -- or has real injury problems -- if Callum Chambers plays at CB (like I saw in a recent game that escapes my memory).

He is the key to Arsenal's defense.  He's the cover CB and Mertesacker, as slow as he is, is the "stopper" who steps out on the ball.  We know Suarez is going to pull a CB around all evening, and Arsenal fans have to hope its Mertesacker, because if its Kos, Mertesacker has no chance to fill those gaps (some are speculating that Gabriel or Chambers may play instead of the BFG, but neither of them are exactly quick either). 

 
 3-1 Barca, Mertesacker stands no chance with the Trident running at him. Ozil and Electric hook up to beat Mr. Shakira and net a home goal.

 
(Apologies if I missed earlier comments about this) FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali wants the voting booths to be of glass, ostensibly so bribed electors can't take pictures of their ballots to prove that they voted for whom they were paid. They could make the ballots public but this idea apparently doesn't appeal to him as much as this version of "transparency."

The teams that have given this year's Barcelona trouble have used their speed and energy to press higher up the pitch as opposed to the counter

 
If you can some how manage to ignore the incredible amount of corruption, UEFA actually does a very nice job with the presentation of the product.

But one thing I can't figure out is why they can't spread these games a bit more. There are only two games today, I would think they could maximize their tv money by having these games start at different times, perhaps as a double header, instead of forcing people to choose 1 game and hope that the other score is not spoiled.

Kind of like why the NFL doesn't move the Super Bowl to a Sunday.

Of course a couple of years ago there would be 4 games today at this stage.

 
Bayern and Barça roll. I didn't know what to make of the Barçenal game until I saw this:

Now I'm going with 9-0. All three with hattys.

These are my two teams, but I'm leaning Barça only because I'm not confident Arsenal can go on to take it all. If it was the semis I think I'd be split. Finals, probably want to see the Gunners get it. I'm working anyway though, so dvr for me.

Bayern v Italy

Juve v Germany

Juve have crossed swords with German teams in 22 home matches, winning 14 and losing five, with three games ending in a draw. The overall record against German sides is clearly in favour of the Italians at 25 wins, 15 defeats and nine draws. Juve encountered Borussia Mönchengladbach twice in this campaign's group stage, with both games ending in a draw. Tuesday's first leg against Bayern is Juventus’s 50th European match against a German team.
 
I'm sure I saw Ribery on a highlight show this past weekend, putting a cross in to Mueller, playing for the first time in what seems like 2 years or longer, but it looks like he's back on the bench today, most certainly injured again.

I actually watched the replay of that game last night, Ribery looked great from what I saw... but I fell asleep before it was over.
