I think that is my problem with the rule.  The rule does not use the word intentionally, like say is used for hand balls.

A player could interfere with a free kick unintentionally I think but according to the rules, that would be a yellow I guess.

I can see that, but think the intent is pretty clear.

No idea why they didn't adopt that trial set of rules they used at one of the U-xx tournies maybe 10 years ago.  Touch the ball after a foul or a throw has been awarded to the other team?  Yellow.  Stand in front of a free kick?  Yellow.  Boot the ball into row Z after you've been called offside?  Yellow.

Took everyone a few days to figure out they weren't kidding, but cleaned up the game flow after that.

 
Yes Mata stuck his foot out to block the quick kick.  Yes its a yellow.  I was simply stating that I don't like that its an automatic yellow since no one asked for 10, they just put the ball down and played it.   But Mata was not delaying the kick.  They took it.  I disagree that it is delaying the kick.  They took it.

In reading the rule, if a team tried to quick kick and you don't have to be 10 yards away, you havent delayed anything, you played defense.  They took the kick. To me, the intent of the rule is to keep players from standing on the ball, kneeling to "adjust your shoe/shincards/socks", kicking the ball away, running over the ball after its set for the kick or heck even walking away with it.   Those are delaying the kick.  Playing defense when a team decides to quick kick with you in range should just teach them to make sure you are out of the way.   If you are in process of giving 10 and they kick it into you, shouldnt be a yellow either.  But refs will routinely give it.

 
The rule would read better for me if it said something like:

Note: A defensive player who either intentionally interferes with or delays the taking of a free kick should be cautioned (yellow carded)

Wait, you want a rule to make sense?  What next, the handball rule? The Catch rule in the NFL?  You ask too much...

You have to be 10 yards away, they don't have to ask. 

Asking means that play starts on the ref's whistle preventing the quick kick

True you dont have to ask.  And if you ask you then have to wait for the whistle to restart play.  So wouldnt having to ask means someone is delaying the kick which means he/she/they should be booked?

And if you do quick kick, then it removes the requirement of being 10 yards away.

Semantics probably and mostly just playing a little devils advocate here.

The referees are pretty lenient about this.  Players lollygag all the time to allow walls to set up.  I don't think I have ever seen someone carded for that.

Mata was an idiot for actually sticking his leg out to block it.  That's always going to get a card.

pretty cut and dry how this plays out and has always played out. the ref did the right and obvious thing here. if mata had just stood his ground, that's one thing- but he put his foot out to block the pass.

I don't see how that's contradictory. A defender must try to get ten yards away from the ball. If he is trying to get ten yards away but the offense kicks the ball before he can, no yellow.

 
I see it pretty regularly though where a defensive player will stand about 6 inches from the ball to prevent the offensive team from doing a quick kick and it seems to be pretty rare that they get a yellow for doing so.   If they are standing right in front of the ball, can the offensive player come up and kick it right into them thus "forcing" a yellow on the player standing right next to the ball??

That's pretty much what it takes, and even then it's not 100%. Sticking you leg out to really show intent will always be a yellow. 

 
In the only in MLS file, Toronto FC has traded General Allocation Money (GAM) to the Sounders for Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) and an international player slot. It's the old GAM for TAM deal.

I follow the rules quite closely but I still have not figured out why teams are not allowed to combine TAM and GAM pools on a player. 

Because they are not allowed to combine it, it forces trades like this so that one of the two pools can be built up.

 It was never going to be easy with Derossi, Nainggolan
& Rudiger out...then when Pjanic was taken out at HT(0-0) also due to injury, it was nigh on impossible.  That game was anything but Ho-hum, though.. .SALAH! & Dzeko missed 3 one-on-one's with the GK in 1st half alone, and then SALAH! again, right after HT.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hit back at critics who have said his club and Liverpool should be meeting in the Champions League not the Europa League, urging people not to "live in the past."

Two of English football's oldest rivals meet in the round-of-16 first leg at Anfield on Thursday, and Van Gaal hit out at what he described as "a negative view" of the competition.

Speaking at a news conference, he said: "I noticed that you have a negative view, but against teams like Midtjylland there were how many fans? There were 58,000. The fans of Manchester United are appreciating it.

"How many fans do you think we'll have against Liverpool? I think maybe 75,000. I think also Liverpool is sold out.

"It's very important for both teams, and the fans are liking to see the duel between us."

The Premier League has today announced an undertaking agreed by clubs to cap Premier League away ticket prices at £30 for seasons 2016/17 through to 2018/19.

Interesting.  Obviously there is more history in England for traveling supporters than in American leagues - but nice to see that the league is doing something to ensure it continues.
