Lol...Woy looks like he just woke up & realized he's in a German stadium.

The Germany v England match was a fun watch.  All of the goals were pretty good.  The back heel to equalize was amazing.

I'm hoping this loss for German will galvanize some kind of movement to trash those horrendous German kits.

Interesting news out of San Diego

======================================

The Chargers finally have their new Downtown Stadium plan to a point where they can unveil to the public. According to sources close to the process the Bolts will make their grand presentation early next week, either Tuesday, 3/29 or Wednesday, 3/30, so they can start the clock on their quest to get a new initiative on the November ballot.

The Bolts will likely be trying to push through a so-called “Convadium,” a new stadium combined with a convention center expansion in the East Village. If they are successful they would leave vacant the current Mission Valley site that houses Qualcomm Stadium. Here, as the saying goes, is where the plot thickens.

Chargers Special Counsel Mark Fabiani has said the Bolts will be working with other business entities, among them JMI Realty. You may recall JMI is part of the business empire of former Padres owner John Moores, who is also a benefactor of San Diego State University (the Moores family made a large contribution to the school to build Tony Gwynn Stadium).

SDSU has voiced an interest in potentially developing the Mission Valley site if it ever became available. Apparently somebody knows something that the rest of us don’t know because in an interesting bit of timing, JMI Realty has already set up an event to reveal its plans for a new SDSU West Campus that will include a brand new, “boutique” stadium.

Part of the official posting on the website www.eventbrite.com describes the event like this:

“A few years ago, John Moores, ex-Padre owner and SDSU benefactor, and his JMI team began envisioning a redeveloped sports, education and business complex at the Qualcomm Stadium site in Mission Valley.  Now, as the Chargers work to develop a downtown San Diego football stadium, the JMI team, working in concert with Cisterra Development, another prominent San Diego developer, will unveil their proposal to develop the Qualcomm Stadium site into a civic gem that all SDSU alumni and San Diego County residents will claim proudly.”

It’s expected the proposed new stadium will be in the 30,000-40,000 seat range and also be available to host a MLS franchise, something Moores has been trying to bring to San Diego for more than a decade. Major League Soccer’s desire to have smaller and more modern stadiums for its teams was the biggest road block to outdoor professional soccer coming to San Diego.

Great news about the San Diego plan. Thanks for posting that. Interesting to hear they have been trying for an MLS team for a decade. I would be so stoked to get a local team.

Impressions from taking a 4-year old to NYCFC:

  • Pirlo is 21 and Villa is 7
  • Popcorn is good
  • Having him sit in your lap because he can't see over the billboards isn't fun (overall the seats were fine though)
  • Was happy to see a red card
Overall it was a good time.  Like I said the seats (212) behind the goal were fine though I'd have switched to the other side for the sun and atmosphere.  More importantly, he had a good time and wants to go back.

Soccerwise, Pirlo was a tad off and they pushed Villa out left in the second half (number 9 for NYCFC was pretty dreadful), so it was sort of uninspiring soccer all around.  At least there were a couple of goals.   Best players on the field were Villa and Fagundez though I guess that isn't a surprise.  NYCFC was really hurting in midfield with so many guys missing.

classic MLS problem we were talking about earlier.  The drop off from the starters to the second line guys can be quite dramatic at times.

the ironic part was the NYCFC spine was fine with Pirlo and Poku, but the wings were pretty brutal (Taylor was ok).  I'm not sure how Lampard and Mix (not sure where the other 2 guys play) really help that besides flooding the middle with "quality" touches.

How did seeing the seeing the game live look on the postage stamp field?  It looks so crowded on tv.

As a Revs fan, being down to ten men at that field is not really much of an issue since there is so little space to cover defensively.

I haven't been to a match in so long, but it didn't look that especially narrow.  It did look a little short though.

Glad he had fun.

I think the best seats I've had were in the 136. cheap too. and you don't really see the infield at all. double plus.

I honestly haven't seen Pirlo a tad on yet for NYC. but Villa is giving his all every time I've watched- living up to being the first player the team ever signed.

but what about Tommy Mac?!

what did you think of Shelton? the games I've watched- he's like a taller version of Yedlin. fast and... fast.

narrow AND short.

when you see the field from the middle and way, way, way up high... you focus on the field, since you can't see the players.

Shelton was with the U23's
Yeah.

McNamara's first touch was horrid.  I didn't mind Poku.  First touch was meh-ish and he's very offensive minded, but he played off Villa's runs very well in  the first half when NYCFC did have the ball.  Reminded me of a tad of Zardes.

FWIW the FIL was wondering why all the NYCFC were foreigners.

I think there are ~11 American's on the NYCFC roster.

Mix, Tommy Mac, Taylor, Shelton, Hernandez and Mullins are the only ones who see the field I think.
and 2 of those guys were missing.  Poku holds a green card as well, so he's technically not foreign for MLSs purposes.

FIL is Croatian and thought the league was just Euro's and Americans.

I have not done a count in a while but I think there are more South Americans than Euros if memory serves.

You are correct about the green card holders, they don't count against the foreign player limit per team.

It was more just a comment on a domestic league having so many foreigners (from wherever) in general.  He did say he would go back if we were in the sun, so the football couldn't have been that bad.

Was checking out futurebook betting odds for Copa America, & USA is the 3rd favorite:

Argentina: +200                              Brazil:        +250                              USA:          +550                               Chile:         +900                              Mexico:      +1050                            Madness...shouldn't Mexico be at least same odds as US, based on recent form? ETA: I hate this new format/board; I'm ######ed enough, I dnot need any extra help proving it...

that's too bad. tbh, I haven't noticed a bad first touch from him.

Poku, I can't figure out. guy looks world-beating one game, and disappears the next. I haven't seen him live to know what he's doing off the ball- so good to hear he's running well off of Villa. or vice versa.

3rd favorite? to finish 4th in our own Gold Cup without all of those actually good teams? 3rd favorite in that way?

did he play?
He didn't get in, but I think he would have been a sub if Horvath hadn't had to come out with the possible concussion.  At the end of the game, Morris looked like he was lugging an anchor around behind him.  Shelton's fresh legs would have been the obvious solution, but they had already brought in Cropper, Kiesewetter, and Alashe.

thanks andy.

I was thinking back to that first game in T&T. the US actually played well, IMO- bossed the game away from home, just couldn't score. at the time I was thinking that was a positive thing, plus getting a point away from home. now... ####### hell. get the three points no matter how ugly.

Huge CONMEBOL qualifier tomorrow night: La Albiceleste vs La Verde!  Sebowski, green or blue?   The mighty, valiant Bolivians, or the haughty, primadonna Argies?  I know you'll be pulling for your boy, that little angel DiMaria, to compensate for Merda Messi's missteps & lack of a right foot...#conflictedsebo#

I usually ignore transfer rumors entirely, but I'm seeing Gotze to Liverpool all over the place now.  Anyone have an opinion if that's really a thing?  Also, why did he fall out of favor at Bayern?  And how good was he at Dortmund with Klopp?

Not as good a goal scorer as Reus, but a lot like Firminio in that he can play all along the line and chip in with low double digit goals and double digit assists.  Once Reus came over, Gotze was mostly a CAM for Dortmund.  For Germany, he often plays as a false nine.  Remember he's still only 23 and has had to battle injuries pretty regularly.

Gotze wouldn't really solve Liverpool's problem of needing a consistent goal scorer.  The most plausible solution there still seems to be some type of miracle cure for Studgie's hammies.

Considering Lallana has 8 goals and 9 assists for Liverpool thru 42 games in the Prem, I'd sign on today for 12 and 12 in a season.  And three attacking mids (Coutinho, Firmino) all putting up those numbers would be tough to defend if there was a goal scorer in front of them.

Who's out there that might be gettable in the mold of Sturridge?  A true scorer, but one that's quick, happy with the ball at his feet, and able to link up with the guys behind him?  Gettable for Liverpool I mean.
