it is really amazing how poorly Arsenal is marking Carroll.  Add to that how awful Ospina is and I wonder why I ever thought they might win with a 2-0 lead.

 
One the heels of a great Swansea win over Chelsea, word comes out that the club is being taken over by American investors. Here we go...

Is it me or does it seem like Andy Carroll is the one matchup that it makes sense to play Mertesacker?

 
Barça loses to Real Sociedad in the Basque country. They seem to struggle up there more than anywhere else in the world.

Both Atlético and Real Madrid won, which means they are 3 and 4 points back right now. I honestly didn't think that the title race would be this tight, but Barça has gotten only 1 point out of their last 9, opening the window.

They rested a bunch of starters it seems, while Atlético did not. Fernando Torres scored, played well and went 90. He won't be available in CL due to the stupid red card in the first leg, so look for Carrasco and Griezmann up top with Saúl and Koke on the wings with Gabi and Augusto Fernández in the middle of the park.

Barça has been up and down the last few weeks, Real Madrid too. Atlético is the most consistent, but has the least upside due to the talent gap.  Gonna be a fun rub to the end with these three teams.

 
Cinderella is one for three at closing out GOAT-contender fairy tales so far...

1) Miracle on Ice
2) Tom Watson's putt on the 72nd hole of the British at 59 years old
3) The half-court shot by Butler to win the NCAA Championship in 2010

I'm a little too young to have seen  the Miracle on Ice.  If Leicester see this out I think I'd rank it #1 on my list of most incredible team accomplishments.  Just insane.

 
Watching the bonus coverage of Liverpool and Stoke City.

Big fan of Scottish commentators.  They should have him speak through a Burger King drive-thru intercom so I don't accidentally understand a single word, tho.

The US hockey game had a lot of off the field stuff (cold war) tied into that increased the magnitude of the already incredible achievement.

Also the US hockey team had the benefit of a short form tournament where variance has a much bigger affect than on a full soccer season.

I am leaning towards Leicester as the biggest underdog story in my life time simply because of the long form nature of what they have done.

 
Pulisic with the start at Schalke today, played 73 minutes:

Christian Pulisic was at the heart of most of Dortmund's attacking play and it was he who very nearly broke the deadlock midway through the first half with a shot that flashed just inches wide of the far post.

I was just about to post this thought in the US thread.

I was trying to think and I can't come up with any US who was as advanced at young age at the club level*.   What he is doing is not only amazingly impressive for a US player it is just flat out impressive for almost any countries player for a team this big.

He is the 8th youngest player in Bundesliga history to play in a Bundesliga game and he is getting decent minutes too.  The Bundesliga started way back in 1963 so being the 8th youngest is a pretty amazing feat.

I am most impressed at how involved he gets every game.  He gets a ton of touches and has a very positive attacking mind set.

* Note that I specifically mentioned club level.  One could argue that Landon was ahead of him at the U17 international level.  But with Pulisic already being capped by the senior side, he could close that gap very quickly.

 
Landon was great as a U-17, but he flamed out at Leverkusen pretty fast IIRC.  Or at least didn't do much of anything.  

At the club level I can't think of anyone like Pulisic.  Other than a few loanees who had great short-term runs (Donovan and JMM at Everton), McBride at Fulham, and Cherundolo for Hannover I can't really think of too many US players who were central players in top leagues.  Let alone for a team near the top of the table at 17 years old.  Worth enjoying.

Here are some others (none any where close to Pulisics age) who were good players in big leagues (this does not include the dual nationals like Wegerle, Fab, Dooley or Jones and others who had good careers in big leagues).

All of these were important members of their teams for extended periods:

Reyna at Wolfsburgh (was team captain)

Dempsey at Fulham

Cam at Stoke

Friedel at Blackburn

Keller at Spurs and Gladbach

Howard at Everton

Bradley at Gladbach and Chievo

Harkes at Wednesday

Boca at Fulham

Guzan at Villa

So weird, same thing happened to me.  I was away for a few minutes and came back to 3-0.  Are we the only ones this happened to?
