whoa... just realized we have France v Italy and Spain v Belgium on RIGHT NOW. 

anybody watching? the other thread fell off my page 1 feed... so, oh well.

 
holy... just saw that Spurs DID get Sissoko.... missed the end of yesterday's news.

Sissoko and Dembele? nice. Dier behind? maybe a 4-3-3 there?

did I miss any other last minute transfer/loans?

no 4-3-3  Spurs will be 4231 under Pochettino - but lots of options to plug in.  

 
Always good to see Qatar lose in WC qualifying.  Lost 2-0 today to Iran.

What Spurs have really addressed is depth.

Wanyama and Sissoko provide excellent depth in CM and allow Dier to be used as jack of all trades potentially (essentially giving Spurs additional RB and CB cover).  Jansen, at worst, is far superior cover for a Kane injury or loss of form from last year.  N'Kodou or however its spelled replaces a prospect with a ready to contribute pro. 

 
Looks like the NASL is in some trouble.

Twitter is buzzing that Ottawa has decided to pull out and that Ft Lauderdale and Oklahoma may fold when the season is done.

It is also possible that Edmonton follow Ottawa out of league.

Why?  Strictly financial reasons?  Not that I follow too closely, but was under the assumption that NASL was growing like MLS.

There was something in Oklahoma about 40 pallets of turf being taken by the owner of the team in the middle of the night.  They play at a high school field (a decent one) and I still can't get a clear explanation.  Also half the field is still missing and they have a game on Sep 11.

that would really suck.

although... we've all been scratching our heads about how USL and NASL are both the 2nd tier of US pro soccer

The NASL has not been growing.  MLS and USL are doing well (they are financially linked together) but the NASL has been struggling.

Note that the NASL is also about to lose its strongest team finacially when Minnesota moves to MLS next season.

The Canadian teams are thinking of starting their own league in Canada but that will struggle with out the big three Canadian teams that are in MLS.

My guess is that the NASL will come close to collaspe soon and a few teams will be offered to merge with the USL and the USL will then be designated the new division 2 league in the US.

I read that story the other day and it is so bizarre.  But from what I have heard the team is such a mess there.

Luckily if Rayo does fold, I think it only strengthens the USL team in the area which from a far looks like it is run fairly well (is that correct?)

I would hope if this happens, Cosmos can roll over to the USL.

does USL have the same financial constraints/rules as MLS?

The USL is still the 3rd division.  Earlier this year they applied to move up to second division status (I think people were sensing the NASL was not goin to make it).

US Soccer has not yet made a decision.

I still think we will see a merger and USL will become the second division.

Grazie.  I just assumed the growth of MLS was symbiotic.  Good to hear that the USL is on the rise.  I really do have to start paying more attention to American soccer.  I feel like a hypocrite.

oh- thanks. I obviously missed (or forgot) that it was still in application status... I just remembered the USL, div 2 thing.

Yes, the OKC Energy was the original OKC soccer team and is well supported and backed.  The owners have backed other 'minor league' teams and know what they are doing.  Plus they have the $ to do it right.  I think the Energy draws around 10k/game.  

Rayo really came out of nowhere to start a team this year but they've been drawing 7-8k/game, which amazes me.

One of the most amazing (off the field) stories in US Soccer is happening in the USL with the fantastic success of Cincinnati.

I wonder... USL has a lot of teams- 29 this year, with 2 more expansion teams already in the books. there are 12 NASL teams (prior to any of them folding)...  maybe they start a developmental league for the MLS 2 sides? or split it up into an East and West as separate leagues?

There is a lot that can happen.

The USL is a strange beast right now.  For the most part, the non MLS 2 teams draw ok but almost all of the MLS 2 sides draw poorly. 6 of the bottom 7 drawing clubs are MLS 2 sides and none of the top 13 drawing teams are MLS 2 teams.

I think they may have made a branding mistake calling the teams "2" instead of letting them appear externally to be more independent entities.

But since those teams are backed by the MLS money, they are likely ok losing some money and just write it off as developmental costs.

Hopefully if and when the NASL and USL merge, some one with a good long term vision is put in charge of structuring that beast.
