wonderful game.  Shame it has to end with pk's.

Unless Mcglauglin is on drugs tonight, a bunch of MLS scouts have to have had their eyes opened.

Wonderful for their MLS resume in so many ways: national tv, huge crowd, big saves, the win....everything perfect.

Let us hope it catches some eyes either for money or votes or both.

I don't think so.  Watch the clip all the way through, they show a replay from behind the goal that gives a better view.
Maybe it is just the weird/chippy shot he got off.  Ball skips past the GK and spins like it is deflected, but I can't see anyone else touch it either.

I read an interesting US Open Cup stat.

The Sj Earthquakes have played in 17 US Open Cups.

Tonight was the first time ever that they beat an MLS team in the competition.

There was something ironic or just funny about Schweinsteiger being the only Fire player to make a penalty, after his famous PK  failures for Bayern and Germany. When a keeper is on fire like that, sometimes it works to shoot one down the middle.

it was a fun game. Really should not have gone to penalties. Its hard to understand why that lineman put the flag up, maybe the tv angle was deceiving.

The CB was stepping up as the ball was played.  In real-time it would have been really tough to tell when the pass was made vs when the CB was up enough to make him off.  The first few replays it looks off, then when they did freeze frame it was on.  VAR would have fixed it tho.

My voice is still raw.  Anything I type here is going to sound like ridiculous hyperbole.  Amazing, amazing time.  Can't believe they pulled it off.

@Bonzaior anyone else who has been to a Cincy game.

Please look at this picture.

There were 32k in attendance last night, but wiki says the stadium is suppose to hold 40k.  Where are the extra ~8k seats?  Is there a huge section empty right where the camera is overlooking?
I was at the game where they set the attendance record last summer v. Crystal Palace -  I think it still stands - 35,061

That is the max attendance for soccer at the stadium.  I don't know if the reduced capacity comes from fewer standing room only tickets or fewer club seats sold.

You can see from your picture a number of empty seats scattered about - so I imagine that is where you would find the difference between 32 and 35k - just random seats scattered throughout the stadium.

As for the "moment" of being there - I think the FCC supporters were already past that point.  One of the things that struck me most about the Crystal Palace game was not the size of the crowd - it was how many people in the crowd were wearing FCC gear/shirts/hats/scarfs, etc.  This was not simply a curious crowd showing up for a PL exhibition - most were there to show support for their club.

I thought the same thing.  There were no large empty areas.  I think it's just like Sinn said--they're just scattered throughout the stadium.

I often talk about bonding moments in US Soccer.  There are many fans in the stands that got that full bond last night.  Some of these scenes will be remembered for a long time

Love when he does this.

Definitely made some memories the last couple games.  I'll never forget Wiedeman's (disallowed) goal in extra time.  The place went absolutely bananas.  My wife tried to jump in my arms - I wasn't ready, she fell and skinned her knee but got right back up like a trooper and kept on cheering.  I looked over to my right and my buddy was on all fours in the aisle doing god-knows-what.  It was 10 seconds of pure bliss/pandemonium.

From reddit, it looks like attendance for soccer is capped at 35k, which makes more sense given how full it looked.

these are moments you don't get too often as fans.  Believe me when I tell you that in 22 years of being a Revs fan, we still have not had a moment like that where everything lined up perfectly.

As we have seen all too often in the recent decades, teams can start out with good support, but with no real bonding moments, the fans can slowly slip away.

Cool article on how the new stadium in Atlanta will feel every bit as home to United as to the Falcons (it is not this way in either Seattle or NE, the other two teams that share with NFL teams.  I assume it is the same in Yankee stadium as well).

Can't. Wait. They are sending out renewals for season ticket holders in Aug/September, before we ever sit in our seats. (of course I'm re-upping)

Amazing stuff. I was on a low after the ATLUTD finish (Heath was just sent packing to Sacramento FC). Watching the end of that game almost puts ATLUTD into the minor leagues in terms of fan hype. If they get promoted, it'll be a destination road game.

One of the fun but often misunderstood stats that are tracked now a days is passing percentage.  The importance of the stat can vary greatly based on if its two cb's passing to each other horizontally or a DM making a vertical pass that beats three defenders.

The stat gurus have now found a way to quantify this.  Through researching more than 20 million (yes million) passes in the Opta data base, they have come up with a model that sets an expected outcome for each pass possible in a game.  Now every pass completed will be compared to an expected out come (ie a completed pass between CB's unpressured should have an almost 100% expected outcome, where as a crowded long vertical completed pass would have a significantly smaller outcome)

The output of this will be a players passing ability score.   It will give a much better view on how a player actually performed in that area of the game.

To give an idea of how large the 20 million sample size is, if you took every pass attempted in MLS history (20+ years), it would not even reach 1/3rd of that number.

From USMNT thread:

My "Pulisick" shirts are live at http://pulisick.us if anyone is interested. They're printed on very nice triblend shirts... white/silver/blue art on red base.

Ill have some available at USMNT v Panama in Nashville next Saturday.

cheers :banned:

Enjoyed watching the Germans win the U21 Euros today.

With this win and the way the young team is playing in Russia, the future continues to look bright for the Germans.
