Belgium - Toby and Jan - maybe Dembele

Germany

Spain

Brazil - Paulinho...

Colombia - I hear Shakira is a free agent. (and Davinson Sanchez)

Denmark - if they can get past the playoff - Eriksen

France - Lloris (and Sissoko...)

Argentina - Lamela
I'll probably just pick an African team.  Belgium is intriguing but they have  :fro: , so that's a NO.  France, Germany, and Spain would feel too much like being a bandwagon fan (hi Chelski and ####-nal fans.)  Maybe Argie, I do love Messi and to a lesser extent Dybala.  Oh, and I'll cheer for Iceland for sure.

I follow Tottenham so I'm a bandwagon fan?  Maybe in the sense that I try to be more like you, Sinn Fein.   :scared:

You won't follow a big Euro team - as that would be jumping on the bandwagon - but you'll jump on the Iceland bandwagon?  ;)

I don't care one way or the other, I assume there will be some good games to watch, and perversely not having to worry about the US losing makes the matches easier to watch.

I think of that more as rooting for the little guy...  I do see your point.  But I think of Iceland similar to Leeds.  Its a feel good story but they will never win it all.

Speaking of damning...the Swiss have a criminal case/are investigating PSG and BeIn owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi for bribing Valcke for '26 and '30 World Cup rights for BeIn.

Swiss federal prosecutors have announced a criminal case for suspected bribery linked to World Cup broadcast rights against Paris Saint-Germain's Qatari chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

The office of Switzerland's attorney general says the investigation concerns bribes offered to former FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke to award 2026 and 2030 World Cup rights to Qatari-owned BeIN Media Group.

Quite the 48 hours for my soccer fandom.  US crashes out, BabyNats lose and finish 3rd.  NYCFC moves their final game from Yankee stadium to Citi-field.  Not a big deal unless you are taking your soon to be 6 year old and 5 friends to the game for his birthday.  Kill me now.

Sounds like this is going to get appealed so still no real progress in Miami

===============

A judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit accusing Miami-Dade of improperly selling three acres of land to David Beckham and his partners for a soccer stadium in Miami.

Judge Rodolfo Ruiz issued his ruling immediately after both sides completed their arguments in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, handing a swift victory to Beckham’s stadium partnership and the administration of Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who negotiated the $9 million no-bid land deal.

didn't occur to me what the ramifications of the yanks winning would be.

7 train working this weekend?

Next weekend (22nd).  They basically got booted in case the Yankees make the World Series (the ALCS games finish on the 18th).  I have to run through and see how many kids/parents are OK with going out to CitiField, but I may have a ticket or two.

It's honestly not that much worse (55 minutes versus 45 minutes) just annoying logistically.

have they played soccer there? I wonder how the field and sight-lines work out relative to yankee "the worst soccer stadium in history" stadium

I tried to figure that out (they don't have the tickets online yet).  Nearest I can tell is the endlines behind the goals look good and then not much else.

"still intrigued"

I'd rather he pump that money into his team and MLS.
It seems clear that nothing is ever going to change here unless he gets a sweet heart land deal in Boston.  I still don't know if he is willing to spend the money on the stadium itself but there seem to be indications he would spend it but not with out the land already in place.

Up til then, he is just going to spend to what the salary budget basically states and maybe a little more and pocket a small profit every year (couple of million a year according to the rough guess by Forbes).  He is basically leveraging the rest of the league growing while he does nothing.

And when I mean nothing, I really mean nothing.  Other teams are celebrating opening $50-$75 million dollar training facilities.  This year the big news for the Revs was a new patch of grass behind Gillette to practice on and they only got this because the Pats needed their old patch.

2 votes down, one more to go for Nashville.  If they pass the last hurdle on Nov 7th, I think they are getting into MLS

===============================

The Metro Sports Authority on Thursday voted unanimously to approve a $225 million bond resolution for a new Major League Soccer stadium at the city's fairgrounds, clearing one more step before Mayor Megan Barry's proposal heads to the Metro Council next month.

"yanks winning"?

"7 train working"?

Don't do it, Flops...think of your family!

Too soon.

I may suddenly become an MLS fan.

Austin, the capital of Texas and the home to the state’s flagship university, is the largest city in the country without a major-professional sports franchise. That could change within two years if Anthony Precourt, the San Francisco-based owner Columbus Crew SC, decides to head south.

Local sources on Monday told The Dispatch that Precourt is frustrated with the Crew’s declining revenues and poor attendance figures and is strongly considering a franchise move to Austin. Earlier this year, Major League Soccer registered “Austin FC” and “Austin Athletic” as trademarks of the league.

One source close to the team said a deal to host home games at the University of Texas is “all but done” for 2019. The source also said Precourt paid $68 million – above market value – for the team in 2013 because he entertained plans to move it. Another source said plans for a “pristine, waterfront development” in Austin is gaining impetus.

The sources spoke off record because negotiations to keep the team in Columbus are not officially dead. It is standard practice for team owners who might want to move to keep hope alive for the purposes of selling tickets for a lame-duck season. The late Art Modell, for instance, made a public promise to keep his NFL team in Cleveland before he moved it to Baltimore.

A consortium of Columbus businessmen have been trying to work with Precourt to find a local solution. They have scouted locations for a potential Downtown stadium and made offers to purchase all or part of the franchise. Precourt has demurred.

Precourt, under the aegis of Precourt Sports Management, bought the Crew from its original owners, Hunt Sports Group. The purchase agreement contained a promise to keep the team in Columbus for at least 10 years; it also included an escape clause in the case Precourt wanted to move it to Austin.

MLS has plans to grow, but Austin has not been among a dozen cities bidding for an expansion franchise. Cincinnati, on the other hand, has made a hard push. Cincinnati’s case would be stronger if the Crew were no longer in-state.

The Crew is a charter member of MLS, which began play in 1996. It is considered to be the leagues “first franchise.” It opened the country’s first major soccer-specific stadium in 1999 on the Ohio State Fairgrounds.

Although Precourt has paid for some renovations, Mapfre Stadium, as it is now known, is a dinosaur by league standards. Precourt and the league put great import on newer stadiums located in downtown areas.

wow lots of interesting tidbits in that Columbus story.  On the surface it sounds like the typical "pay for my stadium or I am moving" BS but that seems illogical for 2 reasons.

1) The Crew have no juice.  Like my Revs, they are one of the handful of MLS teams that really don't resonate in their local market.  I don't know if they are important enough for anyone to bend over backward for.

2) The real interesting piece is that Precourt was planning to move to Austin from the get go planting the "get out of jail" seed into the original purchase.

I also wonder if the success of FCC is making Precourt worried that their market could dwindle even more should Cincy get into MLS.

The strange part of this is that most people in the Austin area seem to think there is no space for a downtown stadium and that even if there were the public would not pay for it.

There is a great space downtown. The Austin American Statesman building is on the south side of the river and was recently sold to a developer. They don't print there any more so it's a huge wasted piece of real estate.

I from the start, I wondered why the San Antonio expansion bid didn't seem to have any juice.  I guess they and MLS knew about this.

From Austin Mayor to AP: MLS would be huge success in Austin and Crew would enjoy support. No public funding of a stadium

I forgot that Orlando City was originally from Austin back in their minor league days.

One funny note about this some one found on reddit.  About a month ago some poster with 2 total posts to his name started a thread about MLS trademarking names in Austin of which no one paid any attention to.  The posters user name was AustinCrew :)

============

So which side leaked this whole story to the press last night?  Precourt or the people in Columbus who tried to buy the team from him?
