Chelsea transfer ban carries as much weight as fair play allegations against PSG or $ity.

Plus, Chlesea has about 45 players out on loan ffs.

Totally agree...  but I don't think they can sell players either.

Plus, this is the ***Official Soccer Discussion Thread*** a transfer ban for one of the biggest clubs in the world should be discussed in here.

They are free to sell (or buy for that matter) but unable to register players for 2 windows (not 2 years) per your link.

The Disciplinary Committee sanctioned Chelsea with a ban on registering new players at both national and international level for the next two (2) complete and consecutive registration periods.

They will have to serve a two-window ban - but probably not until next winter and summer.

That will give them time to get things in order this summer - but they have a lot of business to do...

Yep, they have an enormous amount of business to do. They need to decide on a manager and get to it. Atletico (and Spurs) survived their ban quite well by having a young, stable team and manager.

Saw this somewhere else...  Spurs just finished their self-imposed two window ban.   :lmao:

low sample size but interesting stat none the less.

MLS vs Liga MX teams in CCL from 2008 to 2016: 74 games, 12 wins (16% win rate)

In 2017, MLS introduced TAM to make rosters more competitive in roster spots 4-9.

MLS vs Liga MX from 2018-19: 13 games, 7 wins (54% win rate)

These CCL games have very interesting results and I think it's difficult to read anything into them at all.  Clubs often times are using them to send rotation players (especially on the road) or preseason games.  I mean Herediano just spanked Atlanta United last night.  Pretty sure Toronto FC got destroyed by some Panamanian team I have never heard of (and believe me when I say  follow a lot of soccer), Saprissa beat Tigres and so on.

Very tough to get a read on any of these games or extrapolate anything out from the results.  As a bettor, this is quite frustrating.

Couple of thoughts on this:

  • Did you watch?  I don't think "spanked' is the right way to describe it.  Atlanta was very poor defensively with one huge blunder.  They looked very dangerous in attack and could have scored 3-4 goals.  One disallowed which was a little unlucky having their own player clear it off the line.  Herediano played really well and they deserved the win just don't think they dominated the match
  • To your point about player rotation - that definitely wasn't the case for Atlanta - they played what I imagine is their best starting 11.  Very strong side.
  • I'm a little concerned with de Boer's tactics if they are going to look like that every game - seemed very naive defensively, especially on the road.  I'll say this much - if he continues to play like that their games will be anything but boring.

And unfortunately, the return leg will not be at the Mercedes Benz but will be on Kennesaw State's campus.  It's a decent stadium for AUFC2 matches or college soccer but it's disappointing to play this game there.  I'm not sure why unless there's a conflict with something - the good news is that will probably allow me to more easily get a ticket (and cheaper).

  • .
at this point in the ccl, every team starts their first choice side.  The days of Liga MX teams sending reserves are long gone.   That used to happen during the old group stages but that format is not in place any more.

MLS teams being in preseason continues to be an issue.  It is a shame Concacaf won't shift the start of the knock out stages a bit to allow the MLS teams to actually be in season like the other leagues.

I didn't watch the game no.  If memory serves, some of these Costa Rican teams play on some interesting artificial turf too.  Heredianio has artificial turf, yes?

One thing I've learned is that sometimes the eyes lie when watching a team, particularly one you support.  Atlanta was a prohibitive favorite in this game and lost by two goals.

Monterrey was another odd result in that they were heavily favorite and lost.

And Tigres sent a very strong side too - save Gignac and lost.  Tigres one of the strongest sides on the continent.  Maybe I just under estimate the strength of Costa Rica

MB was already booked before Concacaf released the schedule.  I think some sort of motocross/monster jam type event.

Yep - artificial turf but it seemed pretty good.  Ball bounced true from what I could tell and there were no obvious loose touches caused by the turf.

Yep - I definitely have rose-colored glasses at times but I think the stats and the eyeballs pretty much tell the same story for me.  It was pretty even match with defensive mistakes by AU being the difference.  Both teams could have/should have score 4 goals.  United hit the post and Josef had a wide open header from like 5 yards out.  Disappointing result for sure - the problem is if they play like that in the return leg they will allow another goal and will need 3 of their own to match.

The only MLS side that matters picked up an easy win last night and looked pretty dang good in the process. I would love to see Sporting make a real run at this thing.

I have no rose colored glasses since the team I support sucks so I can give a relatively unbiased opinion.

Toronto lost 4-0 and it was every bit the dumpster fire reported.  They looked horrible in ways that the venue, the opponent, the preseason form seem to have little to nothing to do with the result.  They may just be a bad team, which is no shock given they were bad last season and coupled that by missing its best three offensive players that were not addressed in the off season.

Atlanta's game was completely different.  It took almost no stretch of the imagination to think that if this game was played one month from now, that at worst, they draw the game.  Atlanta is not only in preseason, they have a brand new coach, playing a new system, and trying to replace the best player in MLS last season with one hoped to be just as good.  Lots and lots of moving parts.

Vermes deserves a ton of credit for getting that team ready in time with no real games played yet.  It was only the second time in history an MLS team beat a Liga MX team by three.  But it would not shock me if there might be some butt clenching time in leg two for KC fans.

KC having relatively few off season changes certainly helped in this process of being ready imo.

After watching most or all of the 5 MLS games in the CCL, the one thing that stands out is that NYR got a hell of a draw in their opponent, who looked like they barely belonged in the group stage for the minnows much less the knock out stage.

Did the absentee owner of the team you support just get charged with soliciting prostitution?  Welcome to my fandom :(
* Man. The feeling when your owner spends more money on hookers than his soccer team...

* At least someone in that organization gets a happy ending.

* Do massage parlors take TAM or GAM?

* So that’s where that DP money has been going

* Haha Blank travels to Costa Rica to watch his team and meanwhile Kraft is getting a happy ending. Wonder what Kroenke was up to?

🤣

This Polish guy Milan got seems pretty good. Only Messi to score more goals in Europe Top 5 leagues then Piatek

Last 7 goals scored:
---------------------------
Higuain 1828 minutes
Piatek 386 minutes (21% compared to Higuain)

Full Season goals (so far):
-----------------------------------
Higuain 10 in 2278 minutes
Piatek 26 in 2160 minutes

Goals per 90 (league goals only):
--------------------------------------------
Higuain: 0.47
Piatek: 0.85 (about double)

So what's everyone's thoughts from an MLS standpoint on this Robert Kraft situation? I got no problem with someone getting a rub and a tug but it seems like human trafficking was involved and these girls were held against their will. Adam Scheftar said he spoke to a source who said Kraft isn't even the biggest name involved. Do the Revs end up getting new ownership who actually gives a #### about the club?

I mean, he can't even human traffic himself a better team up there?

The team by itself is relatively unsellable locally, so the only way this could happen is if they shutter the team, or move it.

But in the end, even if it comes to that, Kraft will simply step down and away and give the team to Jonathan who is the real owner of the team in the leagues eyes.

Jonathan chairs the expansion committee, he attends all owners meetings and votes for the Kraft family, and he represented MLS during the last CBA negotiations.

Always good info from you. Learned a lot about MLS more so from you then anyone else in the last 6 or so months

I should qualify my comments as being read with the thought that Kraft only gets charged with solicitation.  If he is some how involved at any level in the business of sex trafficking, all bets are off the table.

Union Trade CJ Sapong to ChI for Allocation money. Good move for Union. Frees us from CJ's salary, get more allocation money, helps clear part of the log jame with now 6 players Vying for 2 striker spots one presumably going to Santos. Opens up a spot for another player as well

Philadelphia Union have acquired up to $450,000 in allocation money from @ChicagoFire in return for @BigAfrika88.

Thank you for always wearing the Union badge with pride, CJ!

Saprissa and the other big team in CR (Alaj...something) have always been good sides.  IIRC they've made a bunch of finals and won a handful.

ETA:  the two teams have been in the finals 10 times, and won 5.  (Alajuelense)

In the Champions League format, which started back in 2008, no Costa Rica team has made the finals.  A CR team has made the semi finals 4 times in the ten years.

But in the old format, they had significantly better results, winning multiple times.  In fact in 2004 both teams in the final were Costa Rican.

I think the the big change is that in 2008, MLS teams post Beckham, started to get better and subsequently, Liga MX started sending their full strength teams much more often.  MLS teams getting better had a knock on effect because they started to sign many of the better CR players from their good club teams.

Is this generally considered true?
let me explain in probably more detail than you want.

1) MLS startup 1996-1999.  Teams were decent, and with only 8-10 teams it was easier to concentrate the talent.  The teams spent money to launch the league and got some good players sprinkled all over.

2) By the time the year 2000 came around the league was close to collapse, all owners but three bailed and the remaining ones cut costs like crazy to stay alive.

3) From 2000-2007ish, the league limped along and spent as little as possible.  The foreign talent was almost non existent and the domestic talent was almost all from college development.  It was as poor a product as you could imagine which is why no one cared about the league at that time.

4) Once LA convinced the league that signing Beckham made sense in the long run, every thing changed.

5) The DP rule was created and then expanded which allowed teams to get some good quality foreign players.

6) Expansion picked up as the monetary value of the teams started to rise

7) Stadiums and academies were being built across the league.

8 TAM and GAM were created which significantly elevated the spending league wide bringing in stronger foreign players to supplement the upper half of the rosters as well as allowing the teams to re-sign better domestic talent and not lose them to mid level Euro leagues which paid more.

9) Fast forward to today and you have most teams generating their domestic talent from their own academies.  The domestic players are both younger and better than their college counter parts from the 2000's.

So yes, I think it is very fair to say MLS on the whole, has better talent and teams than the drek from the 2000's.

Olden days was dreadful stuff.
The combination of low talent, playing in huge empty stadiums, most fields line with American football grid iron lines was really the nadir of the league.  If I had to pin point a year where is dipped the lowest was probably 2002ish.

It became such a farce that the Rapids led the league in attendance all because of their July 4th game when the vast majority of people only showed up very late in the game to watch the fireworks after.
