It’s a tough one, he’s a great coach.

If you’re in the Toon Army, part of the indoctrination is you love all things Alan Shearer and hate all things Mike Ashley. We don’t have time to cover either in depth, but that’s your baseline.

Magpies have hated Ashley since Year 2 (it all started over him drinking a beer in the stands - you can’t drink within sight of the pitch), and within a week of that incident his management team ousted the hugely popular manager - himself a superstar player and highly successful coach. He immediately played the victim card, OK I got the message, you want me out, and he’s been “trying” to sell the club for almost 11 years. There’s been a string of missteps and clumsily handled situations since, with top tens matching how often they’ve been relegated.

Anyway, he specializes in ####### up ####ed up situations. (renaming the stadium then trying to undo that PR disaster, transferring stars when you have a top ten club, not spending nearly enough to be a top team, et al.) As a businessman, it’s quite a story - high school dropout who became the U.K. equivalent of Howard Hughes (before it got weird.) As an owner, he’s the worst.

St James Park is amazing and their fans are incredible. They’re 275 miles north of London in a dreary seaside factory town, it’s a miserable place to try and attract talent to, and their history resembles that of the Detroit Lions. But their fans are not “same ole Lions”, they’re more like Steelers fans, minus the championships. Every Geordie who has ever breathed oxygen lives and dies with the team. They honestly don’t deserve fans that good.
Excuse my ignorance here but St James doesn't allowing drinking by fans in the stands during the match? I also didn't realize this started with this incident. I just always thought I was suppose to hate him because he dirt cheap and a scumbag.

Alan Shearer

@alanshearer

A world class manager. A manager who performed so well in very difficult circumstances. A manager who understood the fans. Thanks and good luck

@rafabenitezweb

you were brilliant for the Toon. #SHAMBLES
Wish Ashley didn't jerk this around and let him go sooner. Then Maybe my Milan could've gotten Rafa.

The @MLS Board of Governors has voted to lift long-standing commercial restrictions on liquor and sports betting partnerships. Both industries are now open for branding on MLS jerseys, in stadiums, etc
I want a Union Modelo Jersey. I can't stand people asking if the team I'm wearing are Bimbos Its Beemo dumbasses it's a Mexican bread retailer

Everyone in Austin is hoping this means that our homegrown Tito’s Vodka will be the kit sponsor. Also read speculation on Reddit that my company would be the sponsor, which would be super cool, but unlikely since it would come out of my budget.
My company is one of the official sponsors of the Union. More so a retail sponsor and if you wear your gear on gameday spend $20 or more during home matches you get a % off your order. We do the same for Eagles games but it's every game not just home games

It appears AC Milan has been barred from UEFA competitions for mailing to meet financial fair play obligations.  Meanwhile, PSG, City, Real Madrid continue spending money as if they are printing it.  No idea really the formulas they are using here.

it's the #### milan rule.

Madrid never spent the Ronaldo windfall.

Perhaps you've been asleep this summer?

Their net spend last season was -28,65 Mill. €

And so far this year they are at -273,00 Mill. €

(numbers courtesy of transfermkt and have not been verified by this poster)

So that's like -300 million

It was actually in Emirates. It is (or at least it was in 2008) illegal to consume alcohol at any EPL match while in sight of the pitch. Ashley was standing with the traveling fans, as he often did in year one. They thought he acted like one of the lads due to his humble background (believe it or not, he was initially quite popular with the Toon Army.)

Power drinker

There was a police investigation into it, and he weaseled his way out of charges by saying he thought it was a non-alcoholic pint. A few days later the transfer window closed and Manager Kevin Keegan (kind of a big deal) got into a row with the football execs Ashley hired. Keegan got the boot & the Geordies have been calling for the team to be sold ever since.

A couple of Ex-Dons were in Ashley's inner circle when he first took over the club.  Executive Director Dennis Wise hired his former Wimbledon manager Joe Kinnear to take over from Keegan.  Kinnear set course toward relegation before resigning due to heart problems.  Alan Shearer came on board in April to complete the drop.  Wisey was gone by them but Ashley incredibly rehired Kinnear a few years later as director of football, a job he was less suited for than manager.

It’s not a salary cap. Real Madrid’s revenue easily covers it’s spending. They’ve had issues with the youth regulations, but won’t have issues with FFP.

Milan asked to be barred as they felt the punishments with payroll or expenses to break even by the next 2 yrs was unfair as the punishments for the LI regime and the new ones with Elliot have shown they can do well. Elliot and Gazidis said they thought it was fair if Milan said they would take a European banned for this year to settle any other implications for later. UEFA/FIFA whatever accepted.

It is total bull####. The organization of UEFA/FIFA is as corrupt if not more then the US Government and NCAA. PSG used a loop hole of some sort of Neymar paying some fee to circumvent FFP regulations. I know these clubs make more in revenue but UEFA/FIFA argued FFP was put in place to stop the big clubs from overpowering the market and give smaller clubs a chance. Obvious that doesn't happen. Madrid got a slap on the wrist IMHO on their Youth regulations. Should've been kicked out of Europe for a year. Set a precedent. Seems UEFA picks and chooses who follows the rules and who shouldn't. Inter got ####ed too by UEFA without lube and no courtesy of a reach around awhile back if I remember.

That makes sense now and never knew that. So basically it was the NCAA rule of no selling or consuming alcohol during college games inside the stadium. The SEC just lifted that rule though for their conference.

Went to the Union-NYC match last night.  I think both teams were missing their starting keeper (Blake starts for Philly, right).  I know “distribution” gets pu pu Ed but dear god I think @El Floppo could hit the ball better than Freese (and it totally stifled their attack).  Trusty isn’t a CD either.

You can see why Parks was pseudo-successive in Portugal.  Big, physical, quick, fast enough, enough technical skill.  Having said that I have no idea what his actual best position is.  My guess is as the bigger guy in a 2 DMF setup, but who knows.

35 for Philly is fun to watch, he ripped NYC apart the first 15 minutes and then had trouble finding the ball.

Dome also had a nice tactical switch at halftime (Ring was dropping back into a three man backing when they had the ball in the first half and stopped doing that until they had the lead in the second).

@Eephus this is uncharted territory for Madagascar right?  From what I can tell they have never even qualified for the AFCON before this year and now by beating Nigeria today, they won their group.

They were considered one of the bottom 6 teams in Africa at the start of qualification and had to enter a preliminary qualification with other giants like Comoros, Mauritius, and Djibouti before they could join the rest of the continent in regular qualification.

Really cool.

From your lips to God's ears...
STRONG rumors that Ndombele is done, subject to a medical.

Clarke is also done, but still may be loaned back to Leeds (conflicting reports on the loan-back).

Sessegnon(s) are also close - with Stephen Sessegnon maybe headed back to Fulham on loan, while Ryan will be ready to start pre-season.

Yes Blake is at the Gold Cup with Jamaica. Fun little fact. Current USMNT starting Keeper Zach Steffan was an academy player for the Union at one point

35 that would be Jamiro Monteiro whose on loan to us.

We need Blake back in a big way. I think Union win this match had Blake been involved. A year or so ago he had the best match of a Union Keeper statistically vs NYFC at Yankee stadium and breaking the Union Keeper Save record by Mandrogan AKA The Dragon.

Theo Hernandez is done his first part of Physical with Milan.Rest tomorrow everything goes well he'll be announced tomorrow as the new LB for Milan. Really good signing and will be contracted to 2024 for only 20M Euros from Real Madrid. Just have to unload Ricardo Rodriguez. Anyone need a LB?

Also really nice article on why AC Milan chose to opt out of EUROPA LEAGUE This year. Gives a lot of nice context. Still think this whole FFP is total Bull#### and UEFA picks and chooses who should and shouldn't follow. They have a real hatred for both Milan teams while stroking off the EPL clubs.

5 Reasons why Milan chose to opt out of Euro League and why it benefits them in FFP

Madagascar was 300-1 to win the tournament going in.  They have some very long names and a MLS guy.

If they hadn't just beaten the Super Eagles, I'd be rooting for them.

Saw somewhere on the internet that the Galaxy are fixing to add Cristian Pavon to their team.  That would be a pretty incredible signing, imho.  Not sure why he would leave Boca (probably money though) and how the Galaxy will add him since I believe they already have 3 DP's signed, but still would be a nice add for sure.

"Tottenham have signed midfielder Tanguy Ndombele for a club-record £65m from Lyon, Sky Sports News understands.

It is understood that Ndombele has signed a five-year deal with the option for a sixth at Spurs."

:oldunsure:  . Medical was this morning, so I assume no Willian situation emerged....

Clarke was announced this morning also - loaned straight back to Leeds.

@Leeds was quite humorous in their announcement - first tweet:

#LUFC can confirm winger Jack Clarke has completed a transfer to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur #ByeJack

followed immediately by:

#LUFC are pleased to announce the loan signing of Jack Clarke from Tottenham Hotspur #HiJack

I am kinda salty about Clarke to Spurs... but Leeds needs cash, and Biesla gets him for another season so that works.

It only took 518 days to sign a player, and then we signed two!

I thought the US game was bad with the weather but the Revs Colorado game was just nuts

*kick off delayed 1 hour

*teams play for 29 minutes

*game delayed for 90 minutes

*teams play for 6 minutes (!!!!)

*game delayed for 55 minutes

Yikes, now that is not fan friendly :)

:lmao:

Crouch: "Before the final of the Champions League, we went carting. I'm getting to the turn and I'm like, "I'm going to brake" except that my brakes are not working.  I saw Xabi Alonso and Kuyt in front of me, and I asked myself the question "Who's the most important of the two?" So I ran into Kuyt"
